Evening all!

After I moved house in June i have been searching for some were to use to mess around with cars in - my single garage just doesn't cut it!
So after a prolonged search and some disappointment (mainly looking at places that were over priced sh!t holes) i came across this in september.

Please bear in mind i was on a tight budget and have little to no knowledge on how to do most of the jobs properly so just did them the way i thought best. :)

My other half instantly nicknamed it 'THE SHACK' as thats basically what it is but this time it wasnt over priced and had electricity but needed some work to get it to were i wanted it.

Here it is at the start

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack014.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack015.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack016.jpg

Full of crap but it had potential

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack017.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack018.jpg

Reasonable height

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack019.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack021.jpg

nice level floor

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack023.jpg

Well most of it lol

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack022.jpg

So i started to clean it all out

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack027.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack028.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack030.jpg

And gave it a good wash and degrease to clear the dust and oil residue

Filled the whole in the floor

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack036.jpg

And started to give the place a lick of white to brighten it up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack051.jpg

Then started to cut the floor in

Getting there

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/Kadettestate136.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/Kadettestate148.jpg

Then there was the small matter of the door that was a little rotten!

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/Kadettestate141.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/Kadettestate142.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/Kadettestate143.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/Kadettestate144.jpg

I set about removing the rotten wood and previous poor repairs

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack062.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack063.jpg

The haulage company opposite me kindly let me had some of their wood that they use for shoring up their loads

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack064.jpg

And began to replace the cut away wood

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack065.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack066.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack072.jpg

And filled in the rotten slats at the front with some MDF off cuts i had

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack074.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack075.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack076.jpg

Here's the floor finished

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack077.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack078.jpg

Gave the door a coat of undercoat

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack086.jpg

And a top coat

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack087.jpg

I then replaced the wood that edged the side of the door (i had to buy thiis £11!)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack102.jpg

And painted that up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack.jpg

Once the door was weather tight I needed to get on with lighting the place as the nights were drawing in and the clocks went back. So as luck would have it one of my mates could get the tube light fittings FOC so i just had to buy the tubes and the wiring WIN!

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack080.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack082.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack083.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack084.jpg

Let there be light

Count Vaux Alot

I then began to sort the window out - i wanted to be able to open it so kept that in mind

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack088.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack089.jpg

I made up some bars out of a packing cage

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack090.jpg

checked it for fit

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack091.jpg

And painted it

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack092.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack093.jpg

Then moved on to the glass - i removed 4 at first as i had 4 made in perspex to see how it would work

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack094.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack095.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack096.jpg

Cleaned off the original frame

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack096.jpg

and painted it up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack097.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack098.jpg

And fudged them in with some sealer

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack100.jpg

Bolted the bars in properly

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack101.jpg

Notice how much clearer the new perspex is compared to the old glass

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack099.jpg

I have edged the whole door with 2inch by 2inch by 5mm angle and slapped some locks on too but haven't taken all the pics yet as it was dark out here an inside pic

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack108.jpg

Back inside and i deliver a collection of crap from my parents garage

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack103.jpg

And dumped it in 'THE SHACK'

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack104.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack105.jpg

Began to get some storage up on the wall and the tissue

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/partynov10074.jpg

Much better

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack106.jpg

And got some shelving up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/partynov10075.jpg

Next job is to re organise all the sh!te and clear some space to get a car in (possibly a nova if i can find one!) and build a proper work bench as the one that i inherited with the place is as stable as a tramp after a litre of paint stripper!

Yer mike size is spot on really for the money and they are hard to find here also (although i would like it bigger but that means more ££) Its about the same size as a good double, roughly 4 1/2 meters by 5 1/2 meters or 270 square feet i think. I looked at another of a similar size but for £300 a month!

I pay £100 a month for this and my electric is on a coin meter so i know exactly how much im using WIN!

i just got something along the same lines, its slightly bigger than a double garage and down a back street :wtf: (which put me off slightly) but the thing that made me take it was the fact its got a 15ft long 6ft deep pit :d

Although how strong the mdf section of the door is going to be after a few rainfalls, id be tempted to replace it with metal if youre getting expensive 'stuffs' in there:thumb:

Cladding or floorboards (PTG, planed tongue and groove) cant remember off top of my head but it's not too expensive, £10-15 should sort you out. You'll be best off getting some sawn treated stuff though, featheredge board for fencing will do to keep the rain out but a few 19x100mm boards would be good for security, either that or exterior ply but ply will be expensive.

As said MDF won't last 2 minutes outside, also for your white walls inside a bit of masonry paint would be best, or if you must continue to use cheap emulsion you actually cant beat wickes trade (never thought I'd hear myself say that lol) couple of my managers honestly and genuinely blind (as in not just put 1 sheet of a4 over the label and 'accidently' chose our own product as best) and said that it really was nicer to use and better than dulux as claimed by the manufacturer, and around the same price as that b&q value stuff you're using probably lol

Looks a decent little garage otherwise :)

ask a proper timber merchant for a price on 3/4" shuttering ply.. it is strong & lasts for a very long time.

MK999
28-11-10, 11:10 PM
Otherwise known as exterior ply, although "shutterboard" normally refers to exterior (OSB3) OSB, and will be more expensive and stronger than the rest of the door, so there's not much point really...

Count Vaux Alot
29-11-10, 12:10 AM
Does marine ply mean anything to anyone? I have a couple of large sheets of this again 4ft by 12ft ish that I was intending to use to sort the door once everything else was done - it was being used as bench tops at work (covered by the metal) and is like enzo deck (sp) that they make truck body floors out of. It sounds like this exterior ply you speak of.

MK999
29-11-10, 12:31 AM
exterior ply is rain proof, marine ply you can make a boat out of, it's superbly expensive stuff but will last for years on your door quite easily.

mowgli
29-11-10, 08:10 AM

shutter ply is a grade of exterior ply which isn't quite as good on the face, but in 99.99999% of jobs is absolutely fine, and is cheaper than good faced exterior plyboard......

it is sold at proper timber merchants, and not at your average builders merchant or DIY store.

i have used hundereds of sheets of it over the years, it is cheap, long lasting, and what is wrong about putting a strong strip of stuff on the bottom of a door??? nothing in my book.

MK999
29-11-10, 03:47 PM
I've always been told shutter ply was just a 'nickname' for exterior, searching on the web it seems not though

It depends how the cost works out really, if it's as cheap or cheaper than sawn treated boards then it's probably worth it. I was basing my reply on the fact I thought it was the same as exterior ply, i.e pricy. Since he's got some marine ply kicking around it sounds like he's sorted though.

Some more progress tonight

I raided the scrap bin of win and made some brackets to hang these

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack121.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack122.jpg

Even colder tonight

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack123.jpg

To keep warm I moved on to my next mission - a new metal work bench

Take one savage saw

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack124.jpg

And some channel

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack125.jpg

Then get involved

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack126.jpg

It cuts reasonably square too

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack127.jpg

Legs done

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack128.jpg

I plan on using a combination of these off cuts of 10mm sheet for the top - that big bits fooking heavy! (marine ply to the right for the door for those who care)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack129.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack130.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack131.jpg

Then I will be using this 50 by 50 by 3mm box for the rest of the frame - the 7m length wasn't going to fit with out the door open

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack132.jpg

The box cut for the frame front and rear

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack133.jpg

And finally the sides of the frame as well

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/DasAutoShack135.jpg

Hopefully tomorrow should see the frame coming together.

Shiplap is the timber your on about count, it aint cheap either! 18 mm ply would be fab for them big doors, its expensive but strong as ****! I also sorted me out a space at a unit today, heated, lighting, power an a 4 poster!

Ok so this week project work bench has taken a back seat some what as i've had other bits to do....

Firstly last weekend i got the trailer out of the garage and built it back up again to go and collect a mk4 astra coupe turbo on sunday - another little project haha but more on that later.

Trailer out of the garage and rebuilt

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK036.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK038.jpg :(

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK039.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK040.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK041.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK044.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK047.png

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK049.png

Fully rebuilt and ready to go - it only takes a hour or so

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010025.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010026.jpg

Once i was finished collecting the coupe i got the trailer down to the workshop to do a modification i have been wanting to do since i used the trailer the last time to collect the Kadett.

The trailer really needed a winch (luckily every time ive used it so far the cars have been runners) and i had an old hand one lying around so decided to go with that.

In the workshop

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010063.jpg

Loads of space for a winch here

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010064.jpg

Count Vaux Alot

so with some of the 25mm x 25mm x 5mm angle i set about making a frame for the winch

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010065.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010066.jpg

And started to tack and weld

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010068.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010070.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010071.jpg

And put some strengthening in

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010073.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/decemberpiccies2010075.jpg

And bolted that part of the frame in

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK001.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK002.jpg

Temporary vice (as i have no bench yet)

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK003.jpg

And the winch in question

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK004.jpg

Then i moved on to the rest of the frame

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK006.jpg

And welded it in

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK011.jpg

Gave it a quick clean up to move on with the rest of the frame

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK013.jpg

Chilly

Got the upright section sorted, then welded

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK015.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK017.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK019.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK020.jpg

I decided to have this section as bolt in case i need to remove it for anything

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK022.jpg

Getting there

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK024.jpg

All welded in and cleaned up

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK027.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK028.jpg

And some of the other bolt hole drilled

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK029.jpg

Then the last couple from yesterday with the winch mounted

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK030.jpg

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Das%20Auto%20Shack/THESHACK031.jpg

Now i just need to take it all to bits again finish the welding and paint it up :thumb:
