right id thought id start a new project thread as im about to embark on building relatively high power xe!
ive already have a quaife sccr f20, and completely rose jointed front end suspension setup, quaife quick rack, corsa epas column, coilovers brakes etc etc fitted to my nova ill be running the engine on my webber 45 carbs i have on my current engine!
my old project thread
http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96402&highlight=190bhp
the last week i have seriously abused the bank account
ive bought an early 20xe with early coscast head as the base
steel h beam rods
accralite forged pistons 87.5mm
brand new gm oil and water pump
brand new gm cambelt kit
newman vernier pulleys
solid lifters and shims
double valve springs and steel caps
slimmer valve steam oil seals
qed 450 spec camshafts
2.0 8v sump gasket and baffle plate
arp flywheel bolts
arp head stud and nut kit
arp crank bolts
baffled sump
running in oil high in zinc content
engine assembly lube
things still to get are
acl big end and main bearings
headgasket
send head to be ported and polished
and get block bored to accept new pistons
im aiming for 230+ bhp so figures crossed ill hit my goal time will tell i guess
pics to follow when parts arrive
before send head matey....ill drop you a text when out of gfs in morning see what your having done to it etc.

Nice start to a project!
Always loved this nova, looks spot on.
Sounds like its going to be a right track toy once done
About time this one got sorted.
Good luck with the build..
will be a serious weapon
Driven by an even bigger one! lol
Good to see a decent spec without throttle bodies - interesting to see how power/torque is delivered compared to TBs.
What about management?
corsakid
26-11-10, 08:35 AM
Will run it in on the the dizzy setup i have, and then look at getting ignition management!
One to watch, love your car, was telling Gary to convince you sale me it the other day lol
might need 48's to get where you want, but 45's will give you a reasonable bit of poke as scummy brummy nova---chris had 45's on his and got 200bhp on a hot day with fairly minor engine mods compared to what youre doing :)
corsakid
26-11-10, 10:04 AM
45's should be ok imho, if not ill have to buy some 48's we will see
45s are enough imo 48s are abit bit.

It will make that power all day long on 45's, the guy who built my engine builds c20Xe's everyday making between 230-250 bhp on 45's.

Thats true - all the hot rod/oval pick ups have to run T45s and they are around the 230-35 mark - so Stu STFU;)
:p
I'd put 48's on to be annoying
BRoadGhost
26-11-10, 09:34 PM
Understand that even with paper thin chokes 45's will taper to 40MM so the +3 to a 48 wouldn't be much more than 42MM choked.
what, no abuse..... you are becoming soft.

48s are for homos and lady boys. Bet you have boxes of them at home
Better?
nahh, nees 5hit eating added in there to be proper Broadghost abuse

ive liked this motor for a few years now looks ace only part i dont like is the trooper bonet vent but it looks ace!!
I'm guessing the trooper vent is more function than for looks lol
What C/R do you expect using those ?
iirc flat tops on a stock chambered head is 11:1 but flat tops do give a better burn that raised crown.
corsakid
30-11-10, 08:51 AM
yeah 11:1 on these pistons, didnt want to go too high on compression ratio, want a bit of longevity out of the engine
Ah cool, That is what was in my mates and we were knocking on the door of 230hp.
corsakid
30-11-10, 09:22 AM
yeah thats around the power i want to be making,
id like to see a good 240bhp at the fly at about 7.8k:D

30-11-10, 02:15 PM
you would i would aswell hopefully!
I think we would of seen close to that if we had messed with the cam timing, manifold could of potentially held it back but it was still making power at 8650 so it can't of been that much of a restriction

Adam's I assume?
Mine peaks at about 8200 and makes around 245 ish, and is a similar spec to what Ad's was - I am guessing thats down to the timing though.

Was exactly that, cam timing wasn't right and they wouldn't mess with it as they hadn't built the engine.
I'm still confident it would of seen a fair bit more than 230 in the end but after the guide failiure it all went down hill sadly
will - what spec are your cams?

sbd only supply the inner gear if i remember rightly! might be wrong though but yeah got everything off phillip
get there eventually haha, sbd, qed, redline racing, autosprint etc only sell the inners iirc but i can now get an outer too.

Steel on steel is not always a good idea, with oil pumps you can get 'rotor lock' that is why the companies you mentioned did not bother with an outer steel gear.
More of Martin's parts ?

is 'rotor lock' likely then? surely if it was that much of an issue martin would not have produced the outer gear?

Not much has been happening but I bought an early low mileage 20 xe
So it needed a good degrease, the engine had a slight miss fire couldn't see anything obvious, did compression check number 3 cylinder had NO compression,
So removed the head
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/d3adfaee.jpg
Bores are very very good honing marks still present, no scoring or marks in the bores very pleased!
Think this is the original manufacture date

Early early head
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/9bb8dbf2.jpg
This would cause no compression 2 bent inlet valves very strange
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v227/RSGBodystylingska/f857de52.jpg
Be interesting to see what the throats/valve guides are going to be like - ie, are they bigger than the later heads...
There is a later KS there, so we could compare...

Yeah was converted from motronic 2.5 to 2.8 dis pack management was in a nova before i bought it
iirc coscast have smaller ports than the gm heads
