i think its about time i put a project thred on here as i have been building this nova for around 2 years now!

you will all have to bear with me with the updates as i am not in a rush to finish this project so only work on it a few hours here and there. also i have been using several cameras/phones and have lost some pictures

this is a first time redtop build so any advice or critasism is very welcome.

start off with some pics of the almost bare shell because anything before these pics were lost

Shell looks good, doing it slowly and right is the best way to do it IMO!

You stripping all the underseal off underneath too?

kyl3_l
20-11-10, 06:23 PM
Took all of the underseal on all arches completely off and just what was needed underneath, pictures 2 show you will be on shortly

Re coated it with a sound deadning coat which sets rock hard, keyed that and then a heavy coat of spray sealer which is brilliant, it sets like rubber just like the stuff vauxhall put on on in the factory. You need a special gun to spray it and it cost 8.50 a tube, I used ten tube which is the down side but it's definently worth it. Schutz should never put anywhere near a car, its crap and doesn't protect it!!

When I sanded down the engine bay the seam in front of the turrents had already been stitch welded and ground back a little to look neat, the person I bought the car off said it used to have a valver in, so I think somebody hasn't stitch welded it fully?? If you zoom on you can see what mean :thumb:

being a sr it wont of had the studs that hold side skirt clips on originally. the car had some studs on in the wrong place when i got it, i tried some side skirts on and they were sitting flush with top of sill which is to high, so i had to spot weld some new studs on in the right place. took me two or three attempts to get it right, bit of a frustrating trial and error job!

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/103.jpg

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/102.jpg

panel beater rolled the back arches. before they were rolled they were etch primed then primed

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/nova%20shell/100_0476.jpg

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/nova%20shell/100_0475.jpg

once rolled i brushed a load of sealer on the inside waited until hard then a load more. then there will be sound deadning spray then spray sealer on top of that so there isnt a chance any water is getting past!!

some idiot had jacked up the car on the floor pan on the passenger side. it had cracked some of the sound pad so i took off what was needed and knocked the floor back down, there was some surface rust where water had creeped down the cracks and sat. so i rubbed the rust, put some rust killer on and will paint on top. then add a new sound pad afterwards

thanks iain, we have a huge heavy duty sander at i used that with 40 grit discs, then went over that with a smaller da sander with 80 grit discs and once the dents were filled went over the whole lot with a 240 grit. any place i couldnt get a da sander into i used a tiny air sander with abrasive wheels on. and any place i couldnt get with that i used sand paper with my hands until i had no skin left lol

sorry there has been no update in a while!!

rubbed down the primer and primed it all again because i had loads left, will do it good, more layers for the stone chips to get through:)

rubbed down primer in wheel arches and put a load of sound deadening spray

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/131.jpg

once that had set rock hard rubbed it again, not to much so it went through, just enough to key it so the black spray sealer doesnt peel off

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/134.jpg

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/135.jpg

next i brushed sealed all the seams making sure there was no holes or seams missed, dont want any water sneaking in!

06-02-11, 01:04 PM
before i put the some pictures up of the some of the car painted i will explain how im doing it. because this is by no means a quick build i painted the engine bay and the inside of the car and left the outside in primer for now so when, not if, it gets knocked , scratched etc sitting in my garage when puting the engine in its not to paint again if that makes sense?:tard:

with the engine bay painted i can put engine, wiring, suspension, new brake/fuel lines in etc etc basicilly building it back up to be a car again, then i can take it back to work to get fully sprayed with the engine bay and insides getting masked off:thumb:

Nice work mate, what do you plan for brake lines? Copper/braided?

I'm using a twin master cylinder pedal box in the engine bay so I'm just going to run copper for the front brakes (except braided hoses) and will only need a single copper line under the car to the back, then use a t-piece on the rear beam that will split it into braided for the rears, so when it comes to servicing rear calipers come off with lines still attached

looking good mate just a quick question how easy to change to the pedal box set up.

You will need to scrap the standard master cylinder and servo for the pedal box and put new brake lines in as you will be using seperate lines for front and back instead of diagonal lines. Also will need to plug up the hole in the inlet manifold where the servo vacuum pipe would go.

The pedal feel will be alot harder without a servo but I think you can adjust the pivot of the foot pedal to make it better, havnt got this far yet though.

Yes the above one fouls the standard rad fan (not an issue if you're running a slimline one in front though)

Correct there's a lug underneath somewhere that can foul the tiebar

Very nice, what shafts are those? Big block inners and Nova outers? They look tapered?

Well spotted iain I never even noticed before unless it's just the picture? Long story with the shafts. I originally had m-tech big block hubs and shafts but there was alot of play with the hubs inside the bearing so took them back out. Then I remembered I had these which I didn't know exactly what they were
after playing about with different c.v joints I think they could be specially made shafts unless anyone can tell me diffenent?? They fit in 28 spline nova outers, which I believe are sr/1.2 not the gsi 22's and they fit in big block inners, can't remember the splints now, 25???

These shafts came with the car, which had been in a shed for 8 years and I have had it for 3, so I thought 11 years, could be specially made shafts before people knew to use 22's with cav inners??

Could be wrong, but they fit anyway!!

Took a bit of time to stop it from fouling on stuff but can now get all gears, will just need adjusting once its on the road

Being an early loom it has a separate mini loom with the icv and knock sensor plugs in. I was missing this part so I chopped the multi plug off and wired knock sensor and icv plugs off a later loom straight in

Some of the loom taped back up but then out of insulation tape

Thought I better carry on with the doors and tailgate i started ages ago seen as the shell is close to getting painted!!

Passenger door I stripped ages ago

Seam is rust free :)

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/nova%20shell/100_0473.jpg

Unfortunently drivers door looked perfect aswell but wasn't once stripped to metal, is rotten in both corners but luckily it's just the skin and the seams are ok so it will patch up well. I have 3 doors that are all the same, look fine but once stripped there full of rot covered in filler so I give up, patching up it is. Luckily the panel beater at work is very good at stuff like this, he's into his old fords the saddo lol

I'm afraid I am, that's why it will be ashame to use it but the only other gsi bumper I have isn't the best and towing eye is missing so is just a spare really. Don't fancy spending £65 + on a bumper that I already have. Would look awesome unpainted on a white car!

No history what so ever anyway so another reason to reset the milage :) As far as I'm concerned it's a 2011 on a j plate lol

No, panels are just in primer like the outside of the shell. So should only take me a weekend to rub down, paint and polish. Then it's just putting the final pieces back together. Hopefully! No rush to get it done though so start if next year is realistic finish date

Thanks Scott, much appreciated.

Not sure what I'm going for yet?! I'm not to fussed about showing it, more for driving in good weather. I think I will be going for the pillar vinyls, still unsure about the tailgate. I quite like tailgates with no vinyl with the red stripe in the bumper an a gsi sticker.

Thanks Gary. I'm thinking a light metallic grey, something inbetween silver and what the mo's are. Keep changing my mind though, was silver the other week. lol

Wouldn't mind knowing that color too mate, and did you paint the surrounds with it too?
Them front surrounds go in OK, hope them rubbers are alright, as one was a getting a bit crusty.

The surrounds went in fine Scott thanks :) yer one rubber isn't to clever but will pick up another one at some point, can be taken off with out taking the lot to bits again so its not a bother. No I didn't paint the surrounds I just gave them a polish and the colour I use for the skirts etc was VW - LV6T :thumb:

Thanks dan, glad it's giving you the motivation mate, I needed alot of that when I was at your stage if the build. When you finish yours and it's looking awesome you won't think of it as a rot box. By doing what your doing at least you will know it is right and have peace of mind. You will appreciate it alot more aswel, anyone can buy a car, not many people have the skills or patience to do what your doing.

Thought I would try something with these sr sunvisors and some Gsi trim pattern material I had off some old door cards. Cut the old material out neatly to use them as templates the cut the new ones.

http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/ss273/kyl3_l/15a9cee3.jpg

Then got my grandma to stick them in with some sort of glue she uses for sewing and stuff. lol
Never going to be as neat as original but look ok
