serious question this, i am honestly thinking of fitting a diesel into my mk1. small block

1. if i fit a 1.7 isuzu lump & box, i take it i need to run big block conversion stuff to mount the box, shafts etc...
2. the alternator is fitted really low on them (using astra mk3 as a donor) do i need to mod the rh chassis leg?
3. i know the 1.5d has a different rh chassis leg/mount, but would i get away with mounting the engine to the original stock mounts??
4. as it is a road car, would i need to strengthen the bay??

5. all other advice on this subject would be appreciated.

Yeah use big block stuff.
You need to mod the chassis leg for the mount and you need a td nova alternator mount!
No you wouldn't theres nothing at all to mount it to.. You also need all the 1.5td cam belt kit and covers including the back plate. You need the 1.5td stat housing and coolants pipes for the turbo etc..

I would strengthen the bay as they has 132ft lbs standard!

Need any help or info Pm. Its harder than people make out though!

mike, take a looks at the counts quick wip for his diesel, shows how he converted a petrol chassis to derv.

There's no need to mod for a alternator.
Don't forget you'll need a nova td rad too.

Yes am affraid you need a 1.5td out of a Nova, not a Corsa as the corsa mount and stat housing are different.

Shame really as all I had left of mine wre a block head and sump :(

/\ read that, but it doesn't fully explain the gearbox/differences between the 15 & 17 engines...

so can someone explain why the ancillaries off the 1.7 are so wrong for sticking into a nova???just trust me you try bolting the 1.7 in and it will not fit unless you fit the 1.5 stuff. you dont seriously want me to list all the bits that need swapping do you ?

so i basically need the front of the engine & all the external pipework & unboltable housings.

you need the alternator and mount, you have a couple of options for the front water outlet and hard pipe, i chose to cut and reposition the outlet to retain the larger hard pipe. < will come clear when you try and fit the alternator. ideally you want to swap the pulleys and covers for it to be "right". i actually just made a hole for the bottom pulley bolt, again you will see what i mean.

there is then a weird bracket on the back of the engine that needs to come off. theres a number of sensors that need changing. without looking at one i dont know what else is down there to be changed but its no 5 min job

i have the opportunity to acquire an astra mk3 very cheaply, and if i can find a 1.5td lump, i think it will be a long term thing..i'm just trying to work out if its worth doing to my car.

bare in mind your gonna need tank, lines, loom, clocks, chassis leg, fuel filter mount, a few other mounts. easiest way is getting a rotten donor

i know, and a mk1 at that...

Clocks aren't a massive issue surely? Just have to wait for the ECU light to go out instead of glow plug and dont try and actually redline it at 6.5k? lol

Burgo is very right, I have recently changed my engine and it takes ages to change everything, even the bloody oil cooler is different!!

The glow plug lamp is actually in a set of petrol clocks, just put the bulb in :)

The rev counter will need changing as it works off the alternator rather than the coil!

General Baxter

the rev counter wont even work lol
