View Full Version : My car, some history and the new project

I thought I would start a thread on my "current" project as a few people have been showing some interest on another thread.

Many years ago, or early 2005 to be exact I finally finished my xe nova track car, the car was a run of the mill xe powered sr, built from a semi restored shell with the usual coilovers and big brakes as the main mods. Due to a mates car letting us down the week before the Total Vauxhall Donny trackday we decided to pull our fingers out and get my car back from the paintshop and finish it off aiming for its first outing to be Donny lol Well as it happened with not much sleep and a 3am stint on my drive the morning of the trackday we finally got it finished !

This pic was about 5am and we had only driven it no more than a mile, the fact the engine had been sat for 6 or more years was a concern but all seemed well and we got it loaded onto a trailer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/My%20Novas/White%20Nova%20XE/donnyice.jpg

The day went well, managed to get a 1.28 out of it which was quick enough, had some pics taken for TV so all in all it was a great first outing !

As the year went by it got hammered around some airfields locally most weekends then later in the year I met up with some guys on here and headed over to Germany for my first Nurburgring experience, not without some major problems the week beforehand ! cruising home one evening the engine started to run on 3, then 2 then nigh on cut out.

The following morning the head was off, gasket and pistons were written off, with not much time I ran around finding the bits to sort it and within a day or two it was back together and covering some running in miles which we were still doing on the way over there lol

The car was probably at its best then, AP's on the front, well stripped and a reasonably sorted suspension setup, with some tuition and some experienced passengers I eventually managed to break the sub 9 min barrier with it not lonig before we were looking to head home.

A few pics from the PNG trip :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/PNG%20Ring%20Trip%202005/ringtrip22.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/My%20Novas/White%20Nova%20XE/dsc08117.jpg

By the time we were back I was dead set on rebuilding the car into a track based monster, on pricing everything up it quickly came apparent that this was going to be atleast another 10k and potentially even more so with regret I broke the car for spares and this is when the new project came about.

Since passing my driving test like many I had been big into my novas, but also I'd had a soft spot for the old Mk2 Escorts, in early 2002 I had actually owned this car for a while :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/jonboyresisedescortmrk2.jpg

That however wasn't as nice as it looked underneath and once stripped it was clear the car needed masses of work and was not a good base to build anything out of.

Anyway in 2006 a shell I'd been watching for a while came up for sale on ebay, anyone that knows Escorts or old Fords will know these things don't come cheap and although this wasn't a bargain it was a nigh on fully restored shell that had been rebuilt with genuine Ford panels sourced from here there and everywhere :d

On top of the resto work it had also has the usual rally/race preperation done, a good cage, link boxes, had a good axle on it and so on.

This was the shell as it was when I got it :

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/mk2dri.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/06_1_b.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/esc2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/Picture896.jpg

The shell was good but I wanted more work done to it, namely arches, getting it fully stitched up and whatever else it may be in need of.

Firstly the shell was dipped just to confirm there wasn't anything too bad hiding under the paint, from there a load more fab work was carried out and some alterations made to the cage.

The spec of the shell is below :

1979 RS2000 custom
Acid dipped
New roofskin, genuine Rs inner wings, floor pans, splash panels
Ralloy big gearbox and diff tunnel
Exhaust tunnel
Chassis mounts
Double skin bulkhead
Seat bars
Round turrets
Gussetted
4 link boxes
Watts linkage towers
14 point cage extended through the inner wings
Tarmac spec arches

My original intention was to fit a Cosworth YB running around 400hp, at the time I had an engine sitting in the garage but I eventually sold this to build a LET engine for it, that then changed to a big power xe and quickly realising how much money I was potentially going to spend on the engine build alone I sold up and went down a totally different route !

I had been waiting at this point for over 3 years to get my shell back and having lost my job and taking a massive pay cut I felt that the engine had to be sensible, useable and most importantly reliable.

I found myself a Honda S2000 engine for sale at a good price of £1800 with a 6 speed gearbox, 240hp in stock form, loads of revs and it could take it all day long.

The only mods I had planned for the engine was a dry sump as its a very tall engine and fouls on xmember if you keep it wet sumped, plus the fact at 9000+rpm any oil surge can kill the engine in a second ! As well as the dry sump setup I obviously wanted to throttle body it and sort out a custom ecu.

I have been expecting to get the shell back this year so I've started to get a lot of parts together to complete the build, my feelings are that even though the shell isn't here its reasonably obvious what I need to finish it so I've done my best to get what I can together for it.

So the spending begins and finally some more pictures to wet your appetite :)

First up the engine :

Honda F20c 2l 16v S2000 engine
52mm TWM throttle bodies
Carbon trumpets
TTV 7/14 billet flywheel
Tilton twin plate clutch
RED dry sump system

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/P1040748.jpg

Bolted to that is a stock Honda 6 speed gearbox, at the back end will be a full width Atlas axle which runs a Gripper plated LSD with Quaife shafts and flanges, its looking like a 4.63 Transit cwp will be about the ratio to use to gear it nicely for what I want to use it for.

Suspension wise the car will now run on adjustable TCA's maybe something similar to the nova setup I sell.

The Gaz suspension was sold in favour of some Ohlins coilovers with eccentric top mounts and rose jointed rear coilovers.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/P1040730.jpg

The fuel and oil system is sorted, I am hoping to mount the dry sump tank in the corner of the engine bay if there is enough room, the Honda engine requires a big tank though so room could well be a issue but I have enough Aeroquip to put the tank in the boot if needs be. The oil filter has to be remote mounted with the dry sump setup as well.

The fuel system consists of a custom shaped fuel tank, fuel swirl pot with a Facet red top and a 044 pump finished off with some more Aeroquip.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/P1040731.jpg

Cooling is a lot simpler now, I did have a huge Pro alloy Motorsport Intercooler and radiator kit as the car was was destined to run a turbo but now it just needs a simple alloy rad.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/P1040725.jpg

Interior wise the I've tried to keep it to a sensible budget, I managed to get some seats from a car I dismantled which I am not a massive fan of but they don't owe me much and buying some new ones will only cost me a ton of money which right now I have better things to be spending money on.

Seats are Cobra buckets and sidemounts with TRS 3" harnesses, the car runs a Corsa epas setup which is adjustable, a Sparco steering wheel, Race Technology dash and some bronze tint windows to keep the water out and weight down a little.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/P1040726.jpg

So far that is about it, once the shell is back I'll be getting on with getting all these parts fitted up, I'll need to source an ecu and make up a new car and engine loom to suit everything.

I'd love to say when I will have some updates but in all honesty until the shell is back there won't be any major updates !

Hope you enjoyed the read, sorry if it dragged on a little !

Nice nova jonlem.

But the rs2000 is epic i knew a lad who had one in orange with a 2.2 burton pinto lump sat upfront and it was gorgeous but he sold it to a lad in ireland iirc.

The orange Mk2 I had came with a injected pinto, I had a 183hp 2.1 on 45's built for it which was a nice engine, it was bloody awful on fuel though lol

I would do unthinkable things to be able to own/build a 'scort mk2 in that spec.

Thanks for the nice comments, the orange mk2 was indeed the Revs project car.

Just been to collect the tyres for the car today, well the rears anyway, struggling to find out what offset i need for 9" rears so holding back from ordering the wheels but will get them as soon as i know the correct fitment.

Good work, loving the Escort.
Not a car i know much about but its different to see a NA engine going in one instead of the usual YB.

Jonlem
13-11-10, 07:43 PM
Their no featherweight but the engine is still very powerful so I'm hoping for a good all round package.

Yb is great, infact a fair bit cheaper than a let to get power out of reliably, however I've just been out in a 550hp Westfield and although its mentally fast I'd of thought my engine in the same car would match its pace round a circuit.

Nice escort Jon ,you are a man after my own heart into nova,s and escorts 1 day my escort will be finished but i dont think it will be as quick as the nova round a shortish circuit:d

Looking forward to seeing your Nova up against my mates one, compare the handling.com !

Not sure now I'm thinking about it, it might be a 5.1?, which would suit the revs of that sexy engine better.

Jonlem
13-11-10, 10:27 PM
Sadly it wouldn't as the gearbox ratios are crap !

Once the car is finished the next thing I'll fit is a sequential, wether thats a Elite or a 60G from Quaife

5.1 graph:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/51graph.png

4.63 graph:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v306/Jatec/Escort%20Build/463graph.png

Redline is 9500 big ones and will be running the tyres below on the rear, I'd rather not be having to see 9500rpm to see just over 135mph !

That said how much do you want for it ?

New rubber :)

135mph in an Escort, the thought of that scares me!.
Is there a bellhousing conversion for the T9 sierra box, got a 6 spd seq one of these with gear display.
I'll dig the cw&p out and see what ratio it is.

Jonlem
13-11-10, 10:43 PM
Yes they do a bellhousing adaptor for a type 9, which gearbox is it that you have ?

Crikey this is all coming at the wrong time but in all honesty not many gearboxes can handle those sort of revs and thats why in my eyes there aren't many options available.

As for the cwp, if you could that would be great, if I had a sequential then I'd run a 5.1 but as you can see with a 6 speed manual and a 5.1 I may as well just pull away in 3rd lol

Jonlem

2 issues here, 135 is way faster than I will ever go on a sprint day so 5.1 is better for that, however on track I wouldn't want to be on any straights bouncing off the limiter at nearly 10k for any length of time.

Being dead honest I am so undecided on how I want to gear it, someone I met with one had the stock box on a 5.1 and said it ended up being a 3 speed box, he now has the Quaife 60G and with the long first gives it far nicer gearing, thats a £6000 box though but compared to whatthe overall car owes me thats not a lot lol

James, you should have built the Escort, you really should.

Easy to say that Rick but I was looking at another 10k to finish it to a sensible standard, on top of that it needed a proper gearbox and then more power one way or the other.

I'd rather be out of it and have nearly no debt and a car to use then spend another 2 years finishing it.

I want to do trackdays, the Peugeot should do those reasonably well lol
