rob
Is it running in a car or on a pallet?
i would say unless its a runner, bid them in the bollocks for it....
graeme, neither, he is just weighing up the options, he has 3k to build a car.
He really need to know and tell us what he wants the car to do? fast road, track, quarter mile etc. How reliable? Can he afford for it to break every now and again or is it his only car? Personally I'd speak to Sbs but I don't think three grand is going to cover the car, conversion, buying and rebuilding the engine
Same as any engine?
If its on a pallet, feck all you can do really, just make sure it turns over, ideally hasn't been sat for months/years/decades. If the plan is to keep the turbo, give it a spin, check for play, see if you can see any signs of oil.
If its in a car, the obvious things, road test it if you can, make sure it boosts ok, no smoke etc.
if the sellers name is nathan & there is any signs of small fire on the front of the house, run like the wind
4 pistons and a crank is a good start.

bit of everything, around 270-300bhp, yeah he has access to another sheddy car, hes got his eye on a brocade 1.0 corsa thats got 12 months mot and is £400, and our mate is breaking an xe corsa b so the conversion bits will be cheap.
mowgli, i offered £700 for his let and he said he wanted 1500 for just the engine....

meh that was a good engine :( lol
So if he has two grand to spend I'd tell him to speak to Steve his number is easily found on various forums
Oil on the exhaust side of the turbo.
That the engine turns over freely,
Cam belt looks ok,
That everything looks ok (not knackered)
Ecu is unopened if poss,
Loom hasn't been hacked up..
Waste gate on the turbo is sloppy as..
cheers lads, will phase chips see 270 or is he into turbo swap territory?
Phase 2, xe cam and vernier and 3.5 bar fp shouldn't be far off on a health engine
Edit -31 actuator as well tbh
