Right, I may be buying a car soon with MOT but no tax...would i be able to buy the car then tax it at the nearest post office with proof of insurance and the new keeper supplement?

Post office or DVLA office will want to see valid MOT and cert. of insurance before issuing Tax

Does it have to be a certificate of insurance? If i get insurance online and print out the confirmation letter will that suffice?

NO.... it must be the 'certificate of insurance' or temporary cert.
My local refused to accept one Id printed (having been emailed it), but thats just because they're retards.... apparently, they have been 'retrained'

Right another question...if i insured the car online then got the current owner to send me the logbook number and reg number...can i then tax it online before actually filling the logbook out?? (ie so its taxed before i pick it up)
Quite possibly, yeas.
As for the printed insurance certificates, they're allowed now - they amended the regs a while back as insurance companies emailling them was becoming so common.

Would it not be easier to get the seller to tax it and you pay for it?.....I'm assuming he'll have the reminder and all other relevant docs.

This was the first thing i asked when i enquired about the car...lad said he had transferred his insurance onto another car therefore couldnt tax this one.

it some times takes up to 2 weeks for the insurance to go onto the police computer, so you wont beable to tax it that way

I got pulled over in my nova because the police database was two weeks behind the DVLA one, according to the police my car was still SORned however I had it taxed like two days before lol
Why they can't be updated at the same time is beyond me...
