car wont idle

hi all, my 1.4 sr refuses to idle some times its fine accelerating then it starts to miss and when i lift off it pops like a *******, and wont idle at all, just dies everytime. i can keep it alive with revs tho. i think it all started when i ran out of petrol last week it must have sucked all the muck up out the bottom of the tank, it died on me last week when i was driving and i had to rev the crap out of it to try and clear it, it backfire out the top of the carb and nearly took my face off with it lol. i have cleaned the carb with carb cleaner but i dont know what else i can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated :)

Clen the carb. If you have sucked some dirt in, a jet could be blocked.

i have sprayed carb cleaner down it, or do i need to strip it?

You advanced the dizzy the other day, try upping the fuel a tad,
ideally you need to set up the carb properly

If it was me, i'd strip it. Make a note of how many turns to remove each jet, screw etc. Clean, check and rebuild.

Put your hand(s) over the top of the carb and it may suck the **** bits through and then be ok.

alright i will try that next time, yeh i will get it tuned agian on a emissions testing machine tomorrow :) cheers for the help
