simply fit smoothing panel, filler it over, paint it, then screw a number plate to the back bumper with a number plate light from some 1970's car trailer or tractor... then it will still look crap imo

Weld a new panel over the recess, grind flat then smooth off with filler. You can get the smooth boot panels but I've heard they're not that great to fit.

Alternatively you can buy a smooth fibreglass tailgate but you won't be able to retain the latch etc so not ideal if its just for styling.

Mowglis is correct. It has to be a bike plate though, and preferably on at a jaunty angle with wood screws.

For a plate light I suggest any old Ford. lol

Biggest regret on my first nova, i did it but welding a massive plate across the boot then smoothing it in, weighed a ton and looked crap as i couldnt find anywhere to mount my numberplate so it ended up going back on the boot. Plus you have to faf around with crappy boot poppers etc, upto you but more hassle than whats its worth tbh, heres mine anyways:

This is what i wanted mine to look like but couldnt be assed to make a recess lol:

Its funny how these used to be all the rage about 5-10 years ago lol

I was never a fan. Big empty expanse of tailgate, then all the goings on at the bottom. Doesn't really look balanced.

Another option of course is the early style tailgate which has no grab handle, but again I'm not a fan.

It was funny when Rover got in on it with the last of the 25's. When I first saw one with a 'flushed' bootlid and wheel trims I thought some young kid was rolling on his winter wheels. lol
