Give Autovaux a call, I know 16 genuine lifters are about £170 delivered if your planning on doing them

Headgasket=£14, you dont need a steel one if its a standard engine?
Headbolts-£10
Cool stat, pointless, just get a OE one.

Whats actually wrong with the engine atm?

you list bearings, but does the crank need grinding?

what is actually wrong with the engine?

is the head damaged?

yeah.....they still look nice and shiney!

so you had a loose cambelt, or a faulty water pump.... did you do a compression test?

i dunno fella.

i was giving it abit and put it into second and it banged and popped a few times and cut out. head gasket is fine but the waters gone somewhere and the timing slipped but the valves look fine!?

No marks on pistons or anything!?

IM CONFUSED AND DONT KNOW WHATS WRONG WITH IT!

anyone had an engine slip timing and no damage?

i cant see no damage but i can get it tested for about £70 i think. its very carbon'd up! the cams seemed alittle tight when i took the followers off. but there not scored!

is that where the water could of gone?

the timing slipped about 10 teeth out of time.

i didnt do a compression test!

now the heads off......to put it back together would you just buy a full head gasket kit and a new timing belt kit and see what it does?

Graeme

I wouldn't trust a fifty quid oil pump either pal, to me that either says second-hand or after market, if your planning on keeping the car or giving it some abuse I'd price up a genuine one

can you get the head like checked? as well as pressure tested?

nova_saloon
03-11-10, 08:40 PM
replace all gaskets is always a nice idea and a nice clean out, but look at the crank and bearing or if unsure take them to an enginneer but if okay dont replace them you just wear more engine trying to run them in, same with piston rings, if okay there is no point paying to get it hooned and all that for them to bed in just loose precious wall!

And all seals:thumb: crank seal, pump seal (should come with new pump) valve seals, cam shaft seals etc etc

They are also difficult to source, i bought some recently (the gen INA ones) and they took AutoVaux around 6 weeks to get them in from Germany.

If the timings gone 10teeth out mate then it WILL have bent some valves if not them all espescially on an XE.

Damo.

and smashed the guides...guides alone to be replaced will be about £100 then valves either 2nd hand refaced ones or new its going to cost.

If it's just a bog standard XE then just replace the whole engine for a known working second hand one IMO. Unless you want it minty fresh? Didn't your original post say you had just been rebuilding the car though? So i would assume the engine components are very new, or has that part yet to be done?

Maybe I need to re-read this, but if nothing looks bent what is stopping you fitting a new head gasket and timing it up?

anyone got a red top for sale?

philip
08-11-10, 01:42 PM
i could rebuild one with all parts and labour £650, ie oem gasket sets, heavy duty bearings, rings, oil/water pumps, belt kits, headbolts. then would be + guides etc if needed

whats a red top engine worth as a non runner?

mowgli
11-11-10, 01:18 PM
feck all IMHO,but on ebay, about 350

remember the old saying, better the devil you know....

if you get yours sorted, then you own a sorted redtop. just cos a replacement one is a good runner, who's to say that next week it won't blow up, and leave you with a bill for a rebuild.. remember these engines are around 20 years old, and will have had hell for all of them

having seen what every schoolboy dreamer with a corsa is paying for them..... and with unscrupulous sellers out there, yes, in all probability....

i take it it is in bits at the moment??

just the head is from the bottom end and inlet manifold off.

philip
11-11-10, 04:44 PM
whip the sump off and check the big ends and main bearings while its out and sometimes you may not see something wrong, could look ok but the rings may actually be ****ed or piston or 2 could of broken up between the ring lands etc.

i never paid more than £120-130 for xe long motors and thats on a good day

xe long motors?

broken engine?

philip
11-11-10, 04:49 PM
long motor = sump up to rocker only, no inlet, ancillaries etc people have started asking alot of money for xes now and because people are actually buying them the price is going to keep rising, too me unless you can hear it running there not worth more than 250-300 with loom, ecu, box, inlet etc, maybe more if have history though

mowgli

my money is still on bent valves......

but only by stripping it will you know for sure
