View Full Version : Nova 1.5 TD engine in Combo van - cut out, now won't start. No fuel at filter?

Hi all,

I recently fitted a Nova 1.5 TD engine in my Combo. It has generally started on the button, no problems at all. I've done the fuel screw/white ring/dimple mods.

I attempted to drive it home last night and got maybe ten miles. First off, the top coolant hose clip was slack so that popped off. I noticed as the heaters went cold, and pulled in to stop not far along the road. But at the same time, the engine lost all power. I don't think it's been cooked in that short period, the temp gauge never even got above halfway.

It refused to restart once I'd refilled it with water and sorted the hose, until we pushed it down off the kerb and down a hill, when it kicked into life again. It would only idle though, I couldn't get it to rev much over 1500 rpm before it cut out. It seemed happy enough to idle though. We gave up and towed it home.

On inspection this morning, there doesn't appear to be any fuel getting to the filter and it will still not start. It's got about a quarter tank of fuel in it. One thought is that it was simply running from fuel that was in the filter and has never pulled any more through, but it got ten miles and was left idling for some time on a few occasions?

This is the pipework at the pump. The top pipe goes to the top of the filter. The lower one runs back towards the tank. Is this correct?

The blue pipe running across the back of the engine bay here connects to the side of the filter.

Here you can see the fuel pipes both connected to the filter.

The idea later on is to fill the filter with diesel to see if the engine will run again, but why is it getting no fuel? I'm pretty sure I've got the pipes on the right way round, if someone could confirm that'd be great.

Cheers - Dougie

you have an air leak into the fuel lines, id bet the filter head is leaking. try another. does it prime ok? is there any air in the lines at the injectors when you crack em off with it running?

After mucho googling on the subject, I'm inclined to agree. Off to get a new filter and copper washers and a couple of gallons of fresh diesel. Hopefully it'll work!

the other way to eliminate it is to feed the pump direct from a barrel of derv. ;)

Dodgy washers to blame, now running after filling the filter with diesel. Total bugger to get it to clear up, but seems happy again now. Diesel is horrible stuff, it was raining as I was sorting it, and I had to wash the road down with a hose for ages... there wasn't much spilled but it looked like there was!
