Had this about a year now and sold it to a friend a couple of months ago but fate brought

it back to me as my mate wrote it off after a beer or 2 "reversing into a bus."

So bought it back and got it through its MOT fitting a front panel and new tyres and

front wings and now starting to repair the back end fitting a rear slam panel and scuttle

whilst starting to prep for a full respray

Here it is when i 1st bought it then quickly started moddin' it

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01437.jpg

Ive lowered it 60mm on Jamex struts and springs

Fitted GSi calipers and grooved discs on the front

Smoothed off the indicators and door locks and fitted remote central locking.

And just plan on keeping it simple and sell it after its resprayed.

Front panel plug welded and bonded

Here its is after he "reversed into a bus"

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00455.jpg

Bought it back for £200 what a bargain

Had a tailgate from my old GTE rep lying around so got that rubbed down and primered

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00482.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00485.jpg

After welding up flushing the indicator and arial holes and preped for primer

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00488.jpg

Then repaired the dents in the door and flushed the door locks

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00495.jpg

With beefing up the holes with a metal plate and the mig it got too much

heat and warped the door slightly so started heat shrinking it with a wet sponge and the

gas axe.....works great

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00515.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00501.jpg

Wings primered up

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00526.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00527.jpg

Now started trimming the new back panel drilling out the spot welds

Fitted the passenger rear arch panel today and hopefully get the drivers side

fitted tomorrow......here's a few pics http://images.migweb.co.uk/smilies/smile.gif

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00609.jpg

Trimmed the panel down abit and got rid of the excess i didnt need which makes

the job abit easier in the end http://images.migweb.co.uk/smilies/nod.gif

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00610.jpg

Cut out the old arch and found that it wasn't as rotten as i thought it would be and

had alot of good metal to bond/weld to.....

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00615.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00612.jpg

Got the panel sitting straight and lined up then put a seal of bond on the back

which will stop water getting in then tacked up the front....

It's better to tack iratically round the panel and not make a continuous weld. So

tack 1 side then the other, then back again otherwise the panel will warp with the

heat.So it ends end up looking like this....

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00617.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00616.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00619.jpg

That was all i did today so 1st thing tomorrow it'll get a skim of filler and primered.

So just sprayed some zinc primer on in the mean time. Which i forgot to take a

photo of http://images.migweb.co.uk/smilies/doh.gif

Thanks i'll have a look at your thread as it sounds like you've done alot too mate.

Keeping the same colour aswell as you don't see many at all in this colour.

I'm planning on selling it after all this but i'm slowly changing my mind about

that as i would love to have a TV feature on the td as im not sure they've done one yet

No mate will go with water base

cool great stuff use it every day. just make sure everything is prepped and rubbed well. 500 dry or 800 wet on primer areas. just do light coats it might take 4/5 to cover and dry it with warm air you could use a heat gun turned right down and kept a good distance away. as it will boil. then you will need to clear laquer it.

JaysNova
07-12-10, 10:19 PM
Cool mate, im ok with the prep and stuff, also im getting to use a good booth, but i just don't know the best place to start spraying from(Top or Bottom?)

If you are going water based mate they'll need a clear coat anyway. My NOva was done with water based. Took about 3/4 coats of colour and 3/4 coats of clear coat.

JaysNova
08-12-10, 09:11 PM
yeah will defo need to clear coat after water based coat as its not 2k and i want it sealed and protected.

the only thing im unsure about is that ive never been shown the best method and sequence of sprayin the whole car at once and how to keep it wet whilst moving onto the rest of the panels.

if i could get a diagram or vision in my head of the best way to go round or where to start/finish i would be sorted :thumb:

u dont need to keep the paint wet mate. start at the top where it is better light so you can get a feel for the gun. start with the roof and work in section that you are comfotable with. do a rough covering coat on the roof then section by section until you have done the whole car. wait until dry. then a heavy coat or 2 desent coats, which ever you prefer, start roof and work round again. then wait until dry. then if your sure the car is covered in colour do the drop coat. turn your gun down to around 1.25 bar for the drop coat, this coat should look dry as soon as you put in on. leave for around 20 mins then do your clear coat. a half coat again not to heavy, wait untill slightly tacky, then finish with a heavy coat. remember there is a fine line between a mirror finish and it running so be careful, it will always polish up if its a little orange peeley! good look, hope this helps :thumb:

disable the waste gate take white ring out and turn fueling up half a turn good induction kit and ss exhaust right through im only saying whate ive done so far still need a gsi bumper and intercooler

You dont actually need to do the white ring mod, and the fuel screw needs to be up waaaay more than half a turn, my old one was about two and a half turns lol

Its easy enough you just need skinny hands to fit the pipes for the bleed valve on the turbo lol

So which of these pipes has to be blocked off? Never modded a turbo car so this is new territory for me lol

You dont block the pipe off you change it for the pipe youre going to fit the bleed valve into, if that makes sense:thumb:

JaysNova
13-12-10, 09:56 PM
Kind of...so if the pipe is disconnected them you fit a bleed valve. What happens to the bit the hose came off??

Spudly
13-12-10, 10:08 PM
Basically when you get a bleed valve you get a length of pipe with it, replce the one on the car with this and run it up the top of the bay where you can get at it (unlike in that guide as they wanted to hide it) so your pipe now runs exactly as the old one was, now chop it in half and fit the bleed valve, thats it done as if you get a two inlet/outlet one like most are it bleeds itself to atmosphere the more you adjust it, thats your boost done, then you need to up the max fuel screw a few turns (you will need a boost guage) then go play and see what its boosting, they run about 4psi standard and without doing the white ring you can happily see them doing 20+psi:thumb:

Been a while so here's an update.....

Wasn't happy with the wings that i flushed, as i hadn't sprayed any sealer/shutz on the back of them as i ran out of time then forgot bout them and the rust started to come through so cut them out again and welded them up neater and smoothed off again, then sprayed shutz on the back job done!

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00668.jpg

then also rubbed down and painted the inner wings and sealed with tetrosyl

Here's the passenger door filled and smoothed

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00669.jpg

Before i finished up for the xmas holidays i wanted to protect all the hard work that's been done and not to let all the salt and sh4te on the roads eat away and soke through the primer and rust the new arch etc...so found some Toyota cool dark grey paint that was lying around think it was abit out of date but will do to seal up the car till i finish the body work and paint it the right colour :)

Got it running but the Head gasket or the head has mega failure with water going straight in one end and out the other so just going to get it stripped down and see if its worth fixing.
Priority is to get it looking good and get it running for TV in May!

Keep up the good work on yours bud :thumb:

Here's a little update as its been a while and been too busy so.............

Removed all the windows doors and windscreen.

If all goes well should be sprayed in the next couple of weeks

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00920.jpg

I just need to finish off rubbing down the drivers side rear arch,
sort a small dent in the drivers front wing
then filler on the drivers door where the skin was welded
and rub down and smooth the wheel well then its onto shooting some primer while i save up for paint

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00957.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00958.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC00944.jpg

Finally an update for the TD.

Bought a GSi front bumper the other week but needed abit of work done to it as it had a bulge on it from being damaged

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01043.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01045.jpg

So got the heat gun out and then pressed it down once warm to go back to original shape with no luck. So gave it a tap with a panel hammer and it cracked!! Some **** had just slapped on loads of filler on it!!!!

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01046.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01047.jpg

So out came the SMC plastic filler

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01048.jpg

This stuff is really good and goes on smooth

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01049.jpg

http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad236/JAYZCAVSRI/Nova%20SX/DSC01051.jpg

turned out alot better than i thought

Was not happy as i wanted to make sure it was ready myself as im alot more fussier than most......

But he did a good job and that saved me some time so started flatting the whole car and then added sealer to the turrets.

Was brilliant shooting the car from start to finish myself, what a rush.

The boss said that was the best first attempt he had seen since he started in the business.

So was well chuffed with that and the finish was really good apart from a slight run on the drivers wing and that was it!

Missing the TD especially when it comes to filling up. The Scooby just drinks the fuel compared to the Nova which seemed to run on fresh air sometimes!!

Heres how it stands just now mate, soon to be with Softstars though. It runs on fresh air indeed, i did have it back up for sale as i didnt think it was practical enough for me but its just to damn cheap to run so its getting kept now. You have done a cracking job on it mate & I will do my best to keep it good!

Agreed, I'm surprised you did that Kev, then again imagine the kids if you slap a dump valve on it, look GSi redtop turbo! lol

Mah, it has enough people around here fooled so why not :d
Just trying to gather all the right bits to make it a complete GSI rep, only difference will be the engine! For Now ;)
