I use Microsoft Security Essentials, its free, I've not had a virus since using it and it doesn't slow down your PC, can't really ask for more tbh.

I've used AVG free for years without issue, but the latest version seems to run a fair bit slower, so was thinking of changing to something else.

I use a combo of avast, malware bytes and comodo, nothing really gets in/out. AVG doesn't operate a firewall afaik?

Adam

I use AVG and Comodo Firewall.
Dont use Kaspersky IMO, it runs so much s**t in the background processes that it slows your pc right down. I uninstalled it.

Edd

Comodo for me, I thought Norton was crap, then the one I had with a sky package was even worse

avg ****ed my pc up, did not catch anything, so much spyware keyloggers, and crap

i ordered McAfee Total Protection £35 a year and i got 3 subscriptions for 3 pc's i have,

it found over 200 virus, and 500+ spyware crap when it scanned, avg must of missed all that, and yes it was updated. it even tells me what websites my other pcs are using, and i can shut them down

the firewall is that good, i had to put the ports into it, to play battlefield online lol

John
31-10-10, 07:22 PM
hmm, googling avg it seems you hae to pay for it too.

McAfee is to55 for using a ****e load of cpu/mem too.

AVG antivirus is free John, as is Comodo firewall which i use.
Baxter, any decent firewall will need the ports setting up so you can game/download properly.
I have do the same with the inbuilt firewall on my router so i can use my ps3/360 online.

maybe on AVG, as nothing comes for free, these days, i pay for this why would they need to make ones?

avg gets my vote too, although at the moment i'm using avira free edition and i've had no problems with it.

there are so many holes in the windows programs that the AV companies pay people to find their way in & mess things up, then they get a double payout, they fix the virus & both punters & microsoft pay them.... then along comes a service package.....

MalwareBytes is my personal AV choice. I've gone off AVG as its become an epic resource hog, and all they do is pimp the pay version (John - they do two versions, a pay version and cut down free version). Also use Ad Aware and Spybot S&D. Occasionally also use Hitman Pro too. Symantec stuff is Ok, prefer it to McAfee stuff although their Stinger app has come in handy before. Kaspersky is good, but I'm never going to be too trusting of Russian AV software lol

One AV will nver catch everything anyway, and most will regularly come up with false positives.

[edit] Mowgli, M$ rarely pay anyone other than their own internal guys for pen testing lol

You're welcome. Its the best package I've found for finding the nasties. It does run a little slow on a crap PC, but on anything more than half-decent its fine.

I deal with virus removal every day, and we've been pushing Kaspersky for years, we get one repair in for viruses with kaspersky installed every few months, compared to several per week for all of the other major names. AVG is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike, plus it insists on running a scan as the machine boots up.

Mazz
31-10-10, 08:08 PM
Maybe if you stopped off all the dodgey porn sites GB you wouldn't have a problem!

I honestly can't remember when the last virus i got was  If you are browsing normal sites, not warez/pr0n etc then you really shouldn't have any problems imo..

...plus it insists on running a scan as the machine boots up.

There is an option to turn that off as mines doesn't run a scan on bootup..

Arrgh no i'm so confused! i don't wanna store data on-line etc, just wanna stop virus and spyware. We only really use it for photos and videos, and browsing the net (ahem occasional dodgy site lol) ebay and the occasional on line purchase.

i've used the free version avast for nearly 2 years and never had a problem, i tried avg and it made my laptop slow as hell whereas avast sits silently in the back ground occasionally updating its self

Mcafee for me, I get 3 licences from o2 for £7.50 unlimited usage and free router, it may slow down some laptops but on my pc it's fine, even when running a full scan it works fine, only problem I had was installing it with windows 7 on a 64-bit setup but got it sorted in the end.

Norton utterly sucks. I just use free Microsoft 'security essentials' jobbie, seems fine for me.

PC is still operating fine anyway. AVG seemed hassle for me, it always prompted me to pay for it & didnt like being re-installed freebie again.

Macs aren't flaw free, there's a pretty extensive list on the vulnerability site I use. Sure, not as many as Windows PCs, but then on a per user basis its probably a little more even, what with Apple only having about 50 mac users worldwide lol

another vote for avg free here but it does slow tanias acer down a bit. though it is shabba and needs a new fan and some more memory and speed.

my dell loves it mind.
