View Full Version : £1500 Diesel Tow Car/Daily
Ok so i want a diesel to replace my Vec GSi. Im thinking around £1500 mark.
It has to be family sized- so Vectra, Octavia, Mondeo, Passat etc etc
It must be no older than 2003.
Vectras come with a range of engines- 1.9cdti, 2.0dti, 2.2dti.
Mondeo 130map i want not 115 also nice to be tje 6speed box!
VAG stuff is boring to drive but reliable.
Best MPG on the three and the models? Most reluable, common problems.
Thanks
Paul

I've had 2 Vectra DTi estates over the last 8 years, and done about 120k miles in them.
Currently I've got a 2.2 130 DTi SRi (2001 model), which I've had 2 years and has never had a single problem.
I'd certainly recommend them, the 2.2 engine isn't the most refined, but it's very economical, and not bad power.
I average 44mpg, and that's with a mix of motoring, including a fair bit of towing too.
Have to 2nd that, i've got the 2.2 130 hatch, also a 2001 sri. Has nearly 120k on the clock and hasn't missed a beat. Quick enough, and as Colin says, around the 44 MPG mark
I likes it :d
who is it you work for again John??

I used to drive a 130 passat company car, when away on business, e.g. lots of motorway work travalling @ 75ish used to get 57mpg on the trip computer.
Be VW for me
Jag X type 2.0 diesel (mondeo in disguise) could only manage @ 45mpg under same conditions.
I was away last week in a 57plt BMW 525d auto and manage 45mpg! which I thought was impressive

1.9 TDi Passat estate for me, very economical. As said the VAG stuff is dull but very good

2.5td omega
older 5 series td. they are excellent.
Id go older an get a 90 Landy likes Dan's. Or a HiLux (dont know if youd get one for £1500 tho).
not a decent one.... and definitely not a 90 worth using for 1.5k
I had a 2005 tdci mondeo estate, much higher spec than the vectra's etc of the same class, good build quality, averaged 48-50mpg driving quite hard. Done over 50k miles in 18 months and never done anything except oil and filters to it.
I sold it for £1250 few months ago but would get another anyday!
Corsa C van FPMSL i know one for sale soon cheap cheap with nearly 150k miles on it lol lol lol

Mondeo's seem like best value for money to me. I was leaning towards them already. Ill put the Vectra up FS soon, t-reg, 142k, sailed through last MOT- 11months MOT, 5months tax, poor bodywork, very clean inside. What you reckon £800-£1000?
A good running gsi is always worth £1k and those miles arent anything on one of them.
Poor bodywork, rust on bottom of 2 rear doors, one front door, kne wing both rear arches, front bumper is very stonechipped, rear bumper has small scrape. Its black but as i say interior is mint.
Just get a marker pen out and colour in the stone chips, will make huge difference!
Missus Dads selling a Mondeo CDTi thing Paul, £1350. Give a shout if you want any info.

and watch the liners drop out in minutes :( lol, fook that!!!
Have to say I thought the Passat was going to be the dullest car in the world..... how wrong was I lol For a big ole family barge it actually handles pretty damn well on some of my favorite roads, and isnt sluggish with the pd130 lump in there.
What you'd get for £1500 though, I'm not sure you'd be happy with.
Oh, I think there is a Mondeo TDCI Ghia auto blah goind cheap, but it has a ****ed engine lol

The 115 on the mondeo is TDDI (not common rail), its the same block/etc but different fuelling. They didn't bring out the 2.2 until about 2004. Even the LX dervs come with cruise control, heated mirrors+windscreen etc.. (at least mine did).
I've got the 130 and its a good car, pulls reasonably well, I get around 48mpg around town, 55+ on a good motorway run. Common problems are rear subframe bushes on the hatch and saloon models, plus the injector/egr/turbo/dmf issues that apply to any common rail turbo diesel.

well my last 2 have been good barges. First of was the 120 1.9cdti vectra, pulled well and averaged 45-47mpg with mixed driving. Stood up well to a decent crash and did its job perfectly fine. My current vectra is the 150 cdti, again plenty of pull and with mixed driving its averaging 50-52mpg.
and a 150veccy is fecking quick....
I recently bought an 02 vectra sri 2.2dti, in terms of practicality and economy its the best car I've had yet.
Only gave £1700 for it with 12months tax and test, only problems I've had with it was the oil cooler splitting (messy but easy job) and a split boost pipe.
Averages around 46mpg and thats with quite regular towing.
A motor I'd definitely reccommend for your needs and price range fella.
i've just bought a renault megane 1.9 dci 120, it does around 40-55 mpg and can tow just over a tonne. thats why i bought it. paid £750 as a cat d insurance on a 53 plate with 70k on it.
with all work done it stands me around £1300 tax and tested and worth around 2.5k.
car wise it drives ok and is 5* ncap rated, so with the new baby due any time soon it is a good safe family motor too.
i would have to say the passat gets my call too, drove a tdi for a few weeks and found it a great car, pulled like a train and tonnes of space in the estate for all tools needed for you paul.
meh @ ncap rating, mine has a dancap rating, what more could you want lol lol lol
ncap isnt really that 'realistic' imho and it only seems to be the french that rave about it as its about the only highlight of a frenchy car lol
i still say, save a bit more and get.....
http://i.ebayimg.com/22/!B25c9jgBGk~$(KGrHqR,!g4E)70soghuBMkRRR,3ZQ~~_12.J PG
and when not towing, go sideways, EVERYWHERE!!!
