Quick update.
my car is a 1.2 merit saloon (88)
with no tape player or radio
and has a (coin meter try lol) covering the hole

After removing the coin meter try (or plastic thing that covers the cd player lol)
i found there were no wire's other than the wireing loom nicely taped up,
and as i looket further there isnt any speakers
so im guessing im guna have to mine own loom up for my cd player,
anyway to the question

not to sure on what wires i need to patch in to from the loom
i think its
Red = perm live
Thick black = ign live
Thin black = accessory
maybe ??

Cheers

Black = Earth??????? Noooooooooo! What Disco Biscuits have you been taking!

On motor vehicles Black is Ignition Switched live. It may vary and have a different colour tracer, but Black (as the majority colour) is ignition live.

Red is permanent live.

Brown is chassis ground.

The spec for the '88 Nova shows Black (0.75mm) Ignition, Red (0.75mm) Perm Live, Brown (2.5mm) Ground, Grey with green tracer (1mm) Illumination.

Grey is used by most manufacturers for illumination.

Off the ignition barrel, from memory, the black with the red tracer is main ignition on, the back with the yellow tracer is accessory.

Yellow is used by some ICE manufacturers for ignition, though some use it for permanent live. Some use red, some use blue, some use purple, some use orange. So always check!

For example:

Blaupunkt have used black for permanent live, blue for ignition, and thick brown for earth, with thin brown for speed pulse signal, orange for illumination, blue for reverse gear signal (for units with navigation).

VDO/Siemens use red for perm live, brown for ground, purple for ignition, grey for illumination, black/white for speed signal.

Bottom line - buy a multimeter.

Behind the clocks, there *should* be a plug with a red, black, and grey/green which is for the radio lead. The pukka lead would have the ground lead terminated in a ring terminal for fixing to a body earth point behind the stereo.

If you're going aftermarket, you could go direct to the battery for your power feed, then find an accessory-live feed for the ignition. Don't forget the fuses!

o.p, take it to an auto electrician. they will charge an hours labour and it will be far safer than having a go yourself.

if your not confident with wires then better leave it to the pros. But its really easy.

I know nothing. I don't do vehicle electrics at all.

Unless the lights flash blue, and the speakery thing goes nee narrr, and it has up to five batteries, complex management & charging systems.

And I know nothing about Novas. Never had one to bits ever. Much.

And yes, it's really easy when you know what you're doing.

I've been told. I'll shut up.
