View Full Version : 20XE getting too warm too quickly

Recently my XE Corsa has started misbehaving a little and the temp is running a little high.

On the motorway its running at 94 (should be about 92), however as soon as I slow down to normal traffic pace the temperature rises to 98 in a matter of minutes. The fan drops it down to 95 but it keeps rising again until the fan comes on even when moving and never drops back below 95 after this.

I have recently fitted a new temp sender for the dash, new thermostat and new radiator and its made no difference. The heaters in the car are not very warm either.

There is no water loss and the pipes to the heater matrix are boiling hot.

Any ideas?

Is the headgasket ok lee? Matrix couldn be blocked?

Damo.

Headgasket and water pump changed about 3 years ago. Reckon its either water pump or matrix as it seems its not circulating the water fast enough.

I would say if you have warm pipes both sides of the matrix then there isnt a block, or you would have a cool hose one side surely?

Wonder why heaters are cold then as radiator is warm and matrix must be if in and out pipes are warm like you say.

True ^^^^ if both sides of the matrix are warm then its more than likley going to be the pump but wouldnt it just fail how would it slow the water flow down?

Pipes are probably hot through conducting heat, however if the matrix will show a lack of hot water flow better, as the airflow over it will cool the water inside it faster if it isn't moving all that quick.

shagged waterpump gets my vote

Easy to unblock the matrix - try that first.

Disconnect the matrix pipes and ram a jet wash down one of the hoses...

ever put any type of radseal or radweld through it? can cause a bit of problems

Never put anything like that in any of my cars. Going to swap heater matrix, stat and water pump at weekend I think, can't afford to have it let me down really.

20xe here Lee.

Anyways my first call would be water pump, then matrix.

But it's easier to do matrix;)

Done the pump when it was in the Nova and was a bitch, hoping Corsa is easier with bay being wider.

Was tempted just to get another engine as it's easily swapped.

Well, you could use that dispack xe of mine till feb?

Or ben has broken a mk2 astra, that's the 20xe for £300 with gearbox f16 iirc

water pump or a blockage somewhere it sounds if there is no water loss! Water pump on my old corsa let wasn't too bad to do tbh ;)

Use the Nova or the MR2 for work then!

As if I would leave them on a public car park all day.

Changed thermostat again last night and it's behaved itself better today so no idea what's going on.

Bit extreme swapping the engine instead of a water pump Lee lol I've done one in an xe corsa, easy enough.

Cant you try by-passing the heater matrix by connecting both pipes together to see what happens?

People would be so shocked to see any nova let alone your nova they would think it was a mirage.

May be worth changing the Fan switch & cts??

Heater matrix that turned up was ****e so its on its way back. Will try flushing the old one out.

Might do water pump at weekend but its meant to be raining all weekend.

Coolant temp sensor and fan switch won't effect this as fan is coming on at the right temp.

Done that but feel like its masking the problem rather than fixing it

check bottom rad hose isnt sqaushed up agains the fan /rad slightly as thats what happend on my nova and it slowed the circulation down alot even tho it wasnt squeezed in that much
