Quaife rack and pinion fitting?

I am just fitting a quaife rack and pinion into my old rack housing and i was wondering if anybody knows what the alloy collar on the pinion is that seems to hold the bearing in place is?It sits in a groove on the pinion and the new one also has this groove.Any help would be great as the haynes manual dosn't show it there.

I don't remember that when I was doing mine. Just the bearing and then a rubber seal to keep muck away from the bearing.
