Im after some of these for my 306 HDaiyyy. I want these ones!

Only, i reckon these are illegal! :(
Are they? Is their a legal alternative?
What can the police do if i got caught with illegal ones?

yep illegal iirc. However a good friend of mine has a german set on his polo gti, never been done for them once (yet!)

i had them on my old golf and lasted 2 weeks before 14 day ticket to remove or 60 quid fine, not worth the hassle imo
Out of interest, are all pressed plates illegal then ?
I have some for the Sport, have to get some others if they are :( they don't look like those tho

No, if the size, spacing, reflection, shine, and other shat is the same.
Theres only a couple of companies doing legal ones though.
Or buy a pre 73 carlol

Went to a 306 meet last weekend and loved the look of them on someone elses!
Of you display a national flag of another country on them then they are not legal, but as said with the GB and union jack and proper letters ans spaces I'd appeal any fine.
Mine havnt even got the GB bit on them, hopefully they'll be ok

I've got pressed plates, still have the origonal "square" pressed plate from years ago:)
Should be fine mate, if it passes a legit mot with them then they must be legal.
my mate got told buy the police that if he had a german mot on the car he would be ok is this right his have the d on them

No, if the size, spacing, reflection, shine, and other shat is the same.

You are thinking about black plates on pre 73 cars.
As you say, if the spacing, size and colour etc are OK thats fine.
Pressed plates are perfectly legal unless they are made to represent another countries plates. They cracked down on MOTs a couple of years ago but it was open to interpretation and difficult to enforce so it was then relaxed.
Edd the plates I supplied you with are fine and are correct for the era of the car:thumb:

the mot tester should have his baws kicked then, their job is to ensure the vehicle is safe and legal to use on a public road to VOSA standards not the police, I've been stopped a few times over the last 15 years of driving and only ever had 1 offence stick due to video evidence ( 79 mph in a 70 )

The latest craze amongst the chavs round here is covering their "mates" rear plate with gaffer tape so they get bummed by the law... idiots
Can't see the pic in the OP, but as said if the plate conforms to the regulations in terms of reflectivity, colour, font, spacing, markings etc then the material doesn't matter (be it plastic, metal, cheese, whatever).
There's a few suppliers out there who make legal pressed plates. Aforementioned dubmeister is/was one, I think they do all their plate making abroad now just to cover their backs though.

^ Black insulation tape to change the characters is so much better.......and so 2001. lol
I got some made for me locally by some small company for my old loon, found out they wernt legal so never fitted them, gave them to the new owner when i sold it and 2 days later got a 60 pound fine, only reason mine wernt legal as they were correct font spacing etc, and were reflective, the reason they wernt legal because they didnt have the 'what-ya-call-it' stamp on it anywhere so were classed as show plates. Pretty sure dubmeister are the only company that do uk legal ones now. These were the ones i bought

Im sure i saw on tv that if your car is pre 2001 then you dont need the BS stamp nor the dealers postcode
all plates need the bsi and makers postcode and name. thats for any plate, also you can only have a black border, and a gb badge with the euro logo in the corner. these are the only extra things allowed. as for pressed plates, there is a a firm called classic plates iirc that do em too. humberside constabs will do you for not having the correct screws aswell....
They can't make you retrofit the BS/postcode marked ones if the plates you have were bought before the rules changed/were tightened
This is true, the law only applies to plates manufactured after 2001, or whenever the date was, which must conform to the current regulations.
So if your old plates from 1989 fell off and broke, and you had new ones made up, they would need to have the BSAU stamp, manufacturer name/postcode etc all on them.
The difficulty of course is how do you prove a reg plate is "new"...
