over the last few days the sub had been dropping out in my car. the amp doesnt go into safety mode, and no matter how many times you turn the headunit off it doesnt bring the sub back to life. the only way to get it back is to go to "sub level" on the stereo, crank it right up to max and wait a couple of seconds, where the bass cuts back in, but after a few touch and go moments it'll drop out again.

2 year old kenwood headunit (thats had lots of stick)
5 (?) year old JBL 12" sub
3 month old fli 400w amp (last one melted after a few years of use)

any ideas?

is it not just a bad connection on the audio side

dont know, i've had a quick scan of the cables at the sub end, and the hea unit hasnt been disturbed for 6 months or so. going to have a good look at the wiring tomorrow as i need to rewire one speaker anyway

Sounds like the amp is goosed. My old Alpine M605 did exactly the same. Replaced with my Infinity amp, and everything was fine.

Could be a poor connection somewhere, cranking it right up is putting some voltage there & bridging the gap.....

Have you got another sub/box you can try to rule out the speaker??

One of the terminals has fallen off the back of the sub...

Hot glue and solder tomorrow, unless anyones got a free 12" sub kicking about...
