Can a head from a 1.8 or 2.0 litre 8v engine be modified to fit my 1.6 e16se to lower its compression?

not sure if the head would even fit. ou'd be better off modifying the head you got or put a head on from a lower cc car i.e. 1.4 or 1.3.
Putting a 2.0 would lower compression and give worse performance.

This is for a 1.6 turbo so a moderately lower compression ratio would mean more power because I could run more boost.

I don't think so, the 1.8 & 2L heads are both from big block engines so won't fit on the 1600 block.

Your best bet for lowering the compression on the cheap is either having the pistons machined down, or a couple of head gaskets/a spacer plate between the block and head. Two head gaskets seems a bit of a bodge though :?
