View Full Version : Handbrake cables
Ok its been a while since I've been under a Nova with working handbrake cables.
When I took the beam off this car originally the adjusting yoke was on the left. However Haynes is saying the left is the 'short side'...?
Can anyone confirm the lengths of the cables too? Having the long one on the left looks like the cable will get in the way of the exhaust....
Underside pics would be very useful!
Cheers. :)

Cheers for the pics.
Very odd, that looks completely different to the adjuster that came off my mk2 (the threaded bit went in to the yoke itself and a nut inside it adjusted the tension)
I ordered the handbrake cables by giving them my reg so assuming they are right for my car (Im using 91 drums on a 93 car but the drums wouldn't affect the cable fitment?!)

Long cable on the left of my gte as the guide was on the left of the exhaust tunnel. Although I may have put it in wrong as the car came without a cable in it. Was the same on my mk2 shell that I stole the yoke out of.
Mines got the long cable on the drivers side - it hooks onto a support on the end of the petrol tank to avoid the exhaust.
Grr so there's no real standard to where they go lol
I'll try swapping them round then as at the moment the long sheathed one on the left unecessarily enters the path of the exhaust tunnel on the tank.
There's about 4-5 different lengths available from the motorfactors too just to add to the fun.
Here's how mine is looking. Got it hooked on to the fuel tank on the LH side

This is correct as per the part numbers and diagrams:

But it looks like it'll get in the way of the exhaust?!
Actually when the other cable is pulled tight in to the adjuster it pulls it out of the way. DILEMMA RESOLVED.
Just need to find a new adjuster and nut as the one I have is knackered and missing the nut.

Part numbers for the adjusters in the part numbers thread.
Sweet nice one. Will grab a new one then as mine are quite crusty.
Just found a usable adjuster and got my handbrake cables on. Adjusted it all the way to the tightest setting and I'm still on 4 clicks - Is that because I haven't yet applied the brake pedal and the shoes haven't adjusted to the drum?
