My mates after his first car, hes about to turn 17 and needs something cheap to run, insure, reliable as possible and has potential/looks nice. He doesnt like corsas. 1.4 or less. Under £1500 and cant be too old so im guessing no novas :(
What would you recommend ? Ideally cars you've owned and can give a good review on, if not, just anything you would spend your own money on. Not just vauxhalls !

Oh and no diesels ideally
well hes 17 and 1st car i would say nothing above a 1L as insure is a nightmare at the moment,
Toyota yaris or seichento(sp?) something along them lines,
I cant give opionions on either but there going to be the cheapest to insure

Yeah insurance is bad. just looked and didnt realised yaris's had got so cheap ! i think he'l want something a bit sporty looking though. As bad as it sounds i suggested a 106 1.1 independence. He's into his modifying and a gti rep would be a good project for any new driver imo. Sorta chucks the reliability side out the window though lol
not gonna get nowt atm, tell him to buy a dog like a rover metro or similar lol and get his 1years no claims, then go buy something that looks sportier
seichento (sp?) do a 1.1 sporting model, theres even a micheal shumacher(sp?) edition lol
As conner said would be best off getting a crappy run around for the 1st year to get his no claims, or crash as 7 out of 10 people crash there 1st car
Forget anything "sporty" (by that I mean anything with badges lol) if insurance is an issue.
Yaris or Aygo would be cool. Reliable and cheap.
And if the dog last long enough (and isnt worth more than 300) we have a tradition of banger racing our first cars, put them out properly

02-10-10, 08:03 PM
Lol yeah your probably both right. seicento you mean ? or cincequento ? them square box thingys ?
My insurance is weird atm, 1400s are the same as 1.0s :s my mate just sold a vtr to save money on insurance, got a 1.0 polo coupe and has only saved £300 :S good job itl only sip the fuel and not down it. Insurance just chuck a random number to young drivers atm, aslong as its 4 figures they dont care

I should probably change that to something sporty looking. i dont know how to explain it, sorta like small hot hatch rep project sorta thing i think, not porsche sporty :p
either of the small fiats are cheap on insurance
C1, 107, aygo are all very cheap to run, insure and are reliable.
£20 a year road tax lol
Just does he have the sort of money they go for?

Il forward em onto him. how about a Punto ? i drove a mk2 back from skegvegas for my pissed up mate and it was a bag of ****e, not sure about mk1s though, anyone had or driven a mk1 ?
volvo 1.6 rear wheel drive the 1.6 are cheaper to insure than the lower engine sizes or a suzuki sj he wont find anything cheaper to insure i can put money on that

The mk1 puntos arnt reliable thou lol i had a 1.2 sporting and had about 7 gearbox's in it :(

i had a 306 td myself for my first car, it was 1908 to insure, and that was admittedly without all my mods declared :tard: and its even more now for newer drivers so i doubt he will be able to justify it. good cars though and good suggestion.

Same here mate. I dont understand how insurance works anymore. I live in a village that is more deserted than anywhere i've ever been, drove gutless 1.1s / 1.2s and the newer the car, the more it goes up :s which doesnt make sense to me because surely theyre safer?
Novas are cheapest for me to insure out of every car iv checked ! (that i actually want to drive)
A last of the line 106, X reg or something like that. Saying that 206's are pish cheap now.
Mk1 Punto's are crap, we owned one for a week but I blew it up on day 2 :(
'corsa' shape Nissan Micras are pretty bombproof and not the most hideous things in the world to drive.... ok not pretty and not cool, but should prove a dirt cheap few years of motoring before getting something fun.
Plus with a slow car you learn how to 'make progress' without the help of a big engine.
Why no diesels? Things like the Lupo/Arousa Derv are only £35 a year to tax, do a billion mpg and are fairly reliable...

1st car should always be crap. Its what you earn in, wether it be roadcraft or looking after the car. 9 times out of 10 it will end up battered as a result of the learning curve.
what about a 1.4 spi mk3 Astra? fits all criteria. Dull car but 12 month on you can scrap it & get something better.
anything with tax and test that runs - its all you need for a first car

Yeah thats why i tried to tell him, he thinks that if he pays good money for an alright car atm though and manages to not kill it he can keep it for a few years and from the use of it it will pay for itself rather than changing insurance policys and cars yearly..

As a full license holder ? my insurance was ALOT cheaper before i actually passed my test. Also just a tip, not sure if its the same for you, but see if your insurance is cheaper as a provisional driver and take it out before you pass your test if it is, you dont need to inform your insurer that you've got a full license and your quote will stay the same :thumb: all legit too, but saying that insurers change constantly
gc_vaux
03-10-10, 10:46 PM
My mates almost 21, been doing the same as you, gettin quotes for when he passes, he wants a saxo furio 1.4, 2200 tp f&t ! :|
I never used to care about insurance, used to pay whatever it took to drive what i wanted too (like my xr2i and civic being in excess of 2500) but too much is changing now and i cant afford to blow all my cash to be on the road

Cars arent the be-all & end-all. No way would I cripple myself financially for the sake of something that depriciates & sucks up so much cash, esp with the way fuel prices are.
lads think modded up motors are a chick magnet, maybe they are to daft teenage girls, but something with some space to actually go places with a few friends is far more sensible than a Saxo/Punto with tiny back seats & feck all luxuries.
nova gsi fully comp 4950
nova gsi third party 3700
nova 1.2 fully comp 1984
nova 1.2 third party 2135
nova 1.3sr fully comp 2099
nova 1.3sr third party 2367
ye am only 800 to insure a gsi on a provisional
SVLET, you ARE mattbrown/Sloth lol
The 'new' king of bullsheets.
provisional license means you have someone sensible with you in the car when driving and you generally dont stck it on a provisional... hence why its "cheap" (thats still more than I pay to insure two cars though lol)
I was having a look round for small ammusing cars last night and I have one word.... Justy :d

I had no other expenses at the time so seemed worth it, was about an extra £100 a month to have a quicker car so not too bad for a bit of extra fun. Helped me learn my limits too and to handle a more powerful car in the future

to some people they are tho, when i was 17/18 it all i ever spent money on (apart from beer)
once you get a little older priorities change and some people find themselves fortunate enough to be able to have 2 cars (a daily and a toy)

Guess you mean a 340, but again there's no 1600's. Just 1400 and 1700cc.
Seicento FTW. I'm going to see one this afternoon lol. A Sporting, even those are uber awesome on fuel and dirt cheap to insure. Of course a poverty model would be even cheaper but looks totally crap. The Sporting has a close ratio 'box, alloys, front fogs, bit of a bodykit etc. lol
I had one forced on me once as a courtesy car for about 4 weeks. That thing rocked. Hence going after one now for over the winter/as a daily beater.

Well, it was about 9/10 years ago when I had that one in my posession, So I wouldn't liek to comment on the handling. I can tell you after tonight if I test drive the one I'm looking at. lol
Saying that though, the wheels are at the corners and the thing is light as hell. So it should be fun enough. I don't remember havign any issues except for looking gay in it! Plus you need to be boss-eyed to read the rev counter and speedo at the same time. Or as I prefer to call it, have eyes like a fighter pilot! lol
They definitley have E/W. [EDIIT] Here's the 'spec' list. lol
1998-2001
* Cat 2 immobiliser
* Halogen Headlamps
* Third Brake Light
* Carpeted Boot
* Front Seat Belt Pre-tensioners
* Electronic Headlamp Adjustment
* Energy Absorbing Steering Wheel
* Analog Clock
* 4 Speed Heater Fan
* Body Coloured Door Mirrors
* wheel trims
* tinted glass
* Sports Bumpers
* Front Fog Lights
* Decorative Side Strips
* Aluminium
Accelerator Pedal
* CD Player
* Top speed - 93mph
* BHP - 54
* Acceleration from 0-62mph - 13.8secs
* Maximum torque - 63lbs per ft
* Combined fuel consumption - 45.6mpg
* optional equiment included ABS and electric(EPAS) power steering
2001+
All models now have the 1100cc motor.
# this has been updated with multipoint injection.
# power output remains @ 54bhp
* some other updates were:
* larger headlamps
* clear front and side repeaters
* different wheel trims
* new style Fiat badge
* different seat fabrics and headrests
* opening rear quarter-lights
* digital mileometer
* power steering
the 'sporting' whilst fitted with the same engine as the other models is still faster due to its close ratio gears.
* it also has:
* 13" alloy wheels
* aluminium effect dashboard
* sports bumpers
* sports seats
* leather steering wheel and gearknob
* lower suspension
The you have the Abarth version with 14" wheels and bodykit. The Schumacher is the same except for a different ratio box and some gay **** like stickers and a keyring IIRC. lol
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2062334.htm
You can get cheaper than that. Overall though, that is maybe about right.
They seem to hold OK money given what they are.
The Sporting I'm going to look at is on a '99 and is £595 with 67K miles and just had the timign belt done today. (As an example)

Tell him to NOT lower it with pikey coilovers etc!!! it will ruin the handling lol
Had one before, nice drive and hold the road well but they are slow :( First car though so hopefully with a lack of power itl last him a bit longer. Insurance not too bad on it either
And pray you dont need a new steering rack... £500 ftl :(
Yup, £480+Vat though you can get an exchange rack for £80ish from A.N Other parts place so not too bad.

Common problems on 'em then ? theres already 2 of you who've posted about the steering racks on them :wtf: :eek:
Yep, when we had one way back the guy on the parts counter knew straight away when I said it failed its MOT on steering.
It's not a massively difficult job (I'd never done a rack before, let alone worked on a newer Ford), just fiddly and a lot of time lying on the cold drive. We got shot soon after, I would guess most of the cheaper Kas have failing/failed racks.

I know a lad who has a Mk5 Fiesta, reallly bad play in the steering had to take it off road and hasnt looked into it. Do you know if its the same rack ? Dont want to be the one to break the news to him on how much they are if they are the same lol
No idea mate, never been a Ford man, the Mrs had the car when we got together. To say I was disapointed at the car I would have to maintain would be an understatement lol

lol I like old fords, up til the S2 Rs Turbo, all downhill from there until the RS's and ST's IMO
Neighbour just got his Focus RS vinyl wrapped in Black with Gun Metal Grey wheels, it looks amazinnn !
I bought that Seicento. lol
It handles pretty well TBH, nice firm suspension too. It only has 54 BHP but doesn't feel too bad, and if you hang on to the revs a little longer it could even be decribed as 'nippy'. lol
I care not though, it looks OK, clearly the best colour for one. Has a load of room inside which surprises everyone and is epic on the juice. :) Which is all I want from it, and £450 FTW IMO.
Also only one mate has laughed and he hasn't seen it. No-one has said gay either which is a wonder! lol
I tried it in the garage, I could fit two in bumper to bumper! lol (hence the crap/cramped pics).
Slate away! lol

For an idea of scale, that is an 18" wheel/tyre in front of the Fiat. lol
lol. The pedals are REALLY close together. Makes for an interesting getting to know it period. We're there now though.
I done some work on a neighbours Micra today and when driving it back to his I was pressing the brake to pull away :/
The roller skate has just had a timing belt (day I collected it) and recent head gasket. I got him down £150 too. :)

Quite like it for a something cheap/reliable, £150 saving always handy lol
Bargain.
The 18" Rim looks funny in the background, almost as big as the front end :p

That doesnt look too bad actually lol
your mate will go & buy whatever shiny thing takes his fancy..... don't let us try & alter his choice.....
with advanced years, you will realise that you should never advise a mate on what sort of car he should buy.... when it breaks down, and it will, it will somehow be your fault.....
but hyundai getz are pretty good, and cheap

Hes bought an Astra now. And he has no-one in his family to help him with what cars are good choices, and the only people he can ask are mates. Iv had 11 cars in 14 months so i'd say i've got a pretty good idea what to stay away from. If it breaks down it breaks down, every car will have problems one day even if theyre minor,everyone knows that so dont see how someone inparticular can be blamed
