Can someone tell what a dry sump does:confused: I have seen a few and well the prices are high for a kit.
Never known what they do and well just want to find outlol
Thanks

Dry sumps are basically shallower sumps. Oil is pumped out from the bottom into a tank before being pumped around the engine.

You have a tank instead of a deep sump, a pump takes the oil from said tank & feeds it to the engines oil pump.

it's mainly to avoid oil surge issues when cornering hard with slicks & with extra ground clearance as the 'sump' is shallower than a pan that holds 5 litres.

also means you can sit your engine much lower and lower your centre of gravity and if you roll on your side your engine wont be starved of oil straight away and do any damage

Basically the oil is stored in a external tank and pumped from a remote mounted pump fastened to the side of the engine driven off the crankshaft usually with a belt.

The oil is pulled from the tank to feed the engine, the sump pan is replaced with a flat item which the pump will scavenge from in 2 or more places thus eliminating the chance of their ever being oil surge issues.

I am using a dry sump setup on my S2000 engine, I know of a few others who are doing similar on here with their engine but usually people avoid it due to the costs involved in installing the setups.

As an example, a kit is between £700 - £1600 depending on the engine you have, you then need the hoses and a tank so in some cases its 2k + to do a proper job of it, that said if your building a expensive engine its a lot cheaper to dry sump it once then have to rebuild it due to oil surge or the Vauxhall pump failing ( which is not uncommon )

This is my mates on his C16XE in a nova, as you can see its very shallow compared to the standard item.
