View Full Version : PowderCoating ? ? ?
Hi all,
As you know I've just started to retore my Nova GTE and i need to prep and finish parts on the car.
It has been suggested i have certain parts powdercoated !
Does anyone know the costs of having this done, Ie any example prices of work done for anyone ?
or
Has anyone done it themselves with a powder coating kit ?
I would love to hear from anyone who might be able to help.
Many thanks
Trevor

Hi there mate, I had my block, rockercover, sump, cambelt cover and backing plate, dipstick tube all done for £40.
The finish is second to none. Well worth it.
And the best thing about it is you dont have to spend hours prepping it, they can do it for you.

You had a block done??
Best coating for many parts IMO. Its very tough & baked on so it stays on. It can be a bit patchy in terms of finish sometimes, but that's generally the nature of it. It's an industrial finish/coating.
Your beam, engine mounts, suspension components & so on are all powder coated black from vauxhall anyway, so that should give you some idea of how widespread it is used.
Personally I would farm it out to a specialist & let them blast the parts & do the powder coating. You need a proper oven for it anyway & many places electrostatically apply the powder so it coats evenly.
just make sure for things like wishbones etc the inner faces are masked up properly
Heres pics of some of the bits i had powder coated in candy blue. Things like engine mounts, bottom arms, anti-roll bar & clamps , rocker cover, powercap, heatshields, steering rack clamps, rear axle, fuel pump mount strut braces and quite a few various other odd n sods inc exhaust. Cost me in the region of £300 to get them all blasted and coated but this price also included a set of wheels at £140.
Just makes the finished project look a lot nicer and cleaner when its all done :thumb:

Exhaust!!
Stu, why mask up insides of a TCA? Surely you want them coated.
that fair changes the look of things:eek:
need to think about gettin some parts on mine done:thumb:

It's the only option IMO. rattle canning will just flake off or deteriorate in the presence of oil/petrol etc.
Exhaust!!
Yeh they now do a heat proof coating that can take the higher temps from the exhaust :d
Bit extreme but what the hey....

What about enamel paint ?
Surely that's just as good but loads less cost?
Was thinking of enamel painting some bits for my Sport.
............ Errm mate, WTF is that nasty barge building symbol doing as your avatar ???? lol
Eh up vx kev,
Thanks for ther pics, gives me a far better idea of what can be powder coated.
I haven't seen your car before is it an ongoing project as i would be interested in reading about it.
Powder coating doesn't seem that expensive considering what they do.
I think I know of a company in Derby that could do it......
But anyone tried to do it themselves with one of the powder coating kits?

Aye its an old project now, finished and sold on towards the end of 2009 so will be way way back in the project threads section!
Depending on the size and amount of parts you want powder coating its not actually that expensive. Much better just to give it to the experts in my opinion :thumb:

I'll have a look at the archives to see if i can find the project.
I see you had the driveshafts done, how did thet do those?
Were the CV joints etc left on and masked?
TBH I would to get my GTE looking like you got yours, it looks mint must have taken loads of time or money! :thumb:

Hi, you want to use Derwent Enamellers in Derby on Kingsway Ind Est. If you ask for Lee Imlac and tell him Rich with the Nova sent you he will sort you out.
I had an absolute ton of stuff done for £90 and it was all top notch. He masks up threads etc so you dont get coating in the wrong bits.
If you want to pop round to mine I can show you some of the bits I had done.

Driveshafts were done with the CVs removed and the splined ends all taped up.
As with most projects it takes a lot of time and money or not a lot of time if you have lots of money depending on your circumstances :)
Took me a year or so to do that one but at the end of the day it just depends on personal preferance and how your wanting you car to look. :thumb:

You'll have to PM your address and tel number and I'll arrange to pop over..:thumb:
Another recommendation for Derwent Enamellers. I only had my stuff shot blasted (painted it myself after) but they did a top job and only cost £20 for all suspension components/tank straps/engine mounts/etc.
Need a decent one in or near Bristol, the only one I have found is expensive..£75 for 1 steering rack, 2 rack mounts and 2 bottom arms.

aw and btw mite sound stupid but dont try taking anything that is plastic ect to be coated it just melts at 180 degrees lol you would be supprised how many people bring plastic stuff to us lol . same with hubs ect make sure you strip the bearings 1st and dont just mask them up the heat just melts the grease out of them and f**ks the powder up . just a couple of tips lads thats all .

My dad used to do powdercoating when I was very small.
Its not cheap he charged £150 to blast and coat a motorbike frame.
Also, it can chip off, and if you get a chip, moisture can get in and lift it off.
Its available in a rattle can now, and you can do it in any oven. Temp is circa 190 degrees.
lol lol lol Your not going to be able to fit much in a oven at home tho are you?
Plus if you get it is rattle can you might as well use hammerite as that'll be just as good.
IMO either blast, etch prime and hammerite smooth it or pay for someone to properly.
or you buy a tin of stove enamel from a fireplace shop. then cook it in the oven when the gaffer is out.......
i think i'll just stick to using the dishwasher for parts washing
we have a big powder coating plant at work, can hang about 100 items at once :D
only white though!
and we have two ovens, one to dry the phosphate and the next one to dry the powder. is about 200 degrees i think.
and matts right, over time it chips and water gets in and ruins it.
we used to have some small test parts hanging outside, and they were ruined after a year or so.
martyn thats more to do with the type of coating you are doing.. isn't yours medical grade??
my ex brother in law had a contract to do the panels on shell forecourts, and the white stuff used on them lasted for a lot longer than a year in pretty harsh surroundings.
vx kev that looks the sh*t where did you have it done??
We use a place called IPF in Glenrothes Fife for all our Powder coating.
Bit far for some of you boys though :)

I wouldnt disagree with the above comments on powder coating, but I know that the company that did the tandem & bicycle frames at my old work did abslutely bombproof powder coating. It took us hours to prepare the frames before building at times. Seeing the bikes come back for servicing over the years is proof is wasnt fragile.
We used ICS (industrial coating services) in Collumpton, Devon.

its martin!
and our powder isnt "medical" specific as thats fooking expensive and there isnt any proof it does anything, thus its not required.
99% of our couches will always be inside and not move, so the paint rarely gets rusty.
sorry, force of habit. one of our drivers is called martyn & i have to type it into a satnav based text type thing all day....
i think the biggest problem is trying to get the metal clean enough.. some powder coat falls off in days, & some takes decades to come off..

re hammerite; Buying it in tin form & spraying it thinned-down with a gun is far better than the rattle cans.
yeh our weldments are usually all wire wheeled down when deslaptered. if they are czech ones then they get phosphated, washed, dryed, powdered and then baked.
sometimes we get weird reactions but its rare.
to much powder can mess up the finish.
the worst is when water gets trapped and then comes out in the hot oven and ruins the powder. (we have designed most of the traps out lol)

Hmm, I've done allsorts in my oven, from heating bearings to paint and plastic painting!
Tbh, there's not many novas that need powder
Plastic coating is best tbh, but powder is cheap, well we bought it £5k at a time lol
You lot must be doing something wrong as ive painted things with rattle cans & compressors before an its never flaked off in my ownership?
I dont think ive had problems with things flaking off, most of the time when i have, its been due to rust under the paint, which i didnt remove/treat well enough.
Yea i havent either, remove rust with a twist knot wheel in a baby disc cutter, then blast any remains off with a wire wheel in a pillar drill. Or if its tres bad we take it shotblasting like.
I just couldnt be arsed with that kind of effort.

but remember to use hammerite thinners! lol
Ime the more you take to a powder coaters the better price you'll get, the one I use will always let you haggle if your paying cash and it'll be even cheaper if your taking it down there on a Saturday morning when the boss isn't about lol
