i remeber a 1.3 sr thurbo on here years ago aswell a grey one! dont know how reliable it was though!! as rob said go 1.6 or buy a let if you want a turbo lump!!

Im trying to keep it legal, ive got an E16SE but couldnt afford insurance so i have to keep 1.2.

I only really want it for the turbo sound and bov, suppose ill have to wait till i can afford to insure a let. Im not putting an electric bov lol

it will cost mmore to insure a modified 1.poo than a stock 1600. esp when the insurer hears turbo....

lewi, learn to drive with a small engine first.. std 1.2, then 1.6, then when you can afford it, LET..

LEWI007
21-09-10, 02:53 PM
well im thinking to run a standard 1.2 for a year and try and get traders insurance then propably 1.6, then xe, then let.

mowgli
21-09-10, 02:56 PM
that sounds like a plan..

Stuart

I ran a 1.2 in 100% std guise for 5 years before getting something a bit faster.....

honestly the yoof of today lol

ive had just as much fun in 1200's as bigger engine'd cars - thats all part of the nova's appeal, there such good fun whatever engine you have

spend the money on suspension/brakes etc to see a bigger benefit

my old 1.2 spi 4 dr was great, 2nd hand billies, 256's and a sr 4.18 ratio box. went really well and was fun. and did 45mpg. all you need at 18.

LEWI007
21-09-10, 03:32 PM
ive upgraded every single piece of the car but im still running a lousy 1.2 it lets the car down.

v6 brakes brand new discs n pads
gaz coilovers
195,45,15s
strut braces
strengthened shell

i want wheelspin in 4th gear though lol

im trying to build a low budget fast 1.2 with a 4 speed. Just to i can stay legal. Ive got a 4 branch and 2inch stainless exhaust. But i dont want to waste money on a 1.2

Sloth
21-09-10, 03:34 PM
look, a 1.2 isnt going to make you beat evos. use it to build a decent n/c bonus, then go for a nice 1600. my mate did this, he had a 1.0 for 2 years thenj i fitted a late gsi engine, he scared himself with it......

LEWI007
21-09-10, 03:41 PM
I know i dont want a fast top end i just want it to go very fast off the mark.

Plus im sick of looking at an 8v in the engine bay it lets the car down

mowgli
21-09-10, 03:41 PM
you have to admit though, a 1.2 is not going to be much use with lewis fully loaded car... they are fantastic fun on 165 tyres, and using 4 wheel steering (the handle between the seats) is ace

so stop opening the bonnet....

remember apart from driving it, a car is there to impress girls... and explaining to their dads that you have it fully legal & insured will do wonders for your sex life

I been driving a 1.2 for nearly two years and i'm 19 , i cant physically insure any engine conversion not even a 1.3 so it has to stay a 1.2 for now. and yea it does suck that it has less power then my mums hairdryer, but my god can you chuck it down some b-roads :thumb:
Not all about speed (for me anyways)

mowgli
21-09-10, 03:53 PM
maintaining speed is the key.

Stuart
21-09-10, 03:59 PM
Basically boosting a 1.2 is going to get you near a mildly modded 1.6 n/a power level, and that's if you do it fairly right, rather than bodging.

If you get it really spot on you might be at 150bhp, but would be laggy and imho won't spin your wheels in 4th lol.

Seriously, nitrous for launch/speed.

LEWI007
21-09-10, 04:21 PM
Well im wondering if theres a way to do something with the gears to make it a rocket off the line.

dj_wudgey
21-09-10, 04:23 PM
its a 1.2 mate its never going to be a rocket!! good things come to those who wait!!

mowgli

Well im wondering if theres a way to do something with the gears to make it a rocket off the line.

1. LEARNING CLUTCH CONTROL

2. remembering that a race is rarely won on the start line

3. realising that racing somebody on the public highway is both illegal & stupid

4. getting over the fact that you only have a 1.2 & are attempting to build up a NCB

o.p if you must beat everyone from teh lights, track down a 5.13 fd box.

LEWI007
21-09-10, 04:54 PM
Where would i get a 5:13 box, im buying an F10 4Speed at the minute.

Im not going to race either because im already banned and dont want to lose my license again but just want the car to be fast off the mark.

Bearing in mind i went to look at an XE the other week and was going to put it in undeclared, so now deciding to put a 1.2 in is a big change

Stuart
21-09-10, 04:58 PM
erm I too would love to know where a 5.13 FD would come from...... this will be good (or not lol)

4.53's are hard enough to find and they actually exist :p

I know a 5.17 was made for someone with a quaife setup, but thats a different game

I used to have lots of fun in my 1.2 novas. Instead of dreaming about owning a car that will get you banned/killed/locked up, just enjoy the car you have, and concentrate on keeping it in good condition.

What a crap thread. Lewi, you're a kid and are gonna have an insurance premium to rival that required of Top Gear's track.

Suck it up, stay legal (lol can you?) build up the NCB and don't **** money onto a ****ing 1200. IMO the above advice is misleading, you seem to have the answer you were after, but it will never ever be a rocket, or even anything approaching quick.

Forget about keeping up/beating mates with VTR's etc. That kind of power (lol) is only for good little boys, not unlicenced joyriders in unsafe, uninsured, incomplete cars in icy conditions with a side of handbrake.(on Xmas day? with little kids playing in the back streets) :thumb:

You may as well hear it now. Doubt you will listen though. lol

LEWI007
21-09-10, 05:19 PM
lol Yeah i know where your coming from thats why im putting a 1.2 in, in the first place instead of putting my 1600 in which i already own. But i thought i might aswell make a few small cheap adjustments to it other than servicing it all.

I dont want it mega fast just a bit quicker acceleration

L14MNP
21-09-10, 05:22 PM
One of those gay NOS badges from the 9 O'clock shop will add 50bhp, and a ****er aerial is another 10. Shouldn't alter the premium too much.

i would of stripped it but meh.

Ive got a lovely, as you put it 'upmarket' Recaro leather interior now. Im moving up in the world.

Also added a few class 90s touches but it all remains secret for now lol

if you want it quicker you could allways get some 40's or something but then the insurance probs wont touch you lol

Delivery driving... You need more than standard SDP cover for that you know mate. If caught with a pizza bag you will be pwnd. lol

[EDIT. See above. lol]

This time last year I had a 1600 turbo in my GSi. Now I have a 1200 8v.
I wouldnt even bether modding it tbh. It wont go any quicker.

By the sounds of it though it may be over braked & well specced in the handling dept. Just stick with it & keep it well serviced & clean under the bonnet, in the mean time keep hammering it. Old Vauxhalls thrive on abuse.

LEWI007
21-09-10, 05:49 PM
Aye the 1.2 will get nothing but abuse but only in appropriate places next time haha lol

and ill have to sort something out for that pizza delivery insurance cos i really cant be on with trouble from the law again, being banned is depressing!

the fact is this.. anyone with a brain will have been all over colins hill climber thread, and realised that a e16se head, cam, inlet & exh manifolds with a decent mappable ecu, and a good turbo & ic will make a 1.2 kick out crazy hp... but cost about £1000..... but thats hardly the point when lewi is on the case....

crazy, like 150bhp MAX on a great day with the wind in your favor...... hardly worth it when the same effort on the 1.4/1.6 would get good answers

mowgli
21-09-10, 10:51 PM

Stuart
21-09-10, 10:54 PM
because 150bhp isnt enough to do the things mr gimp here thinks a terbow on a 1.2 would do.... plus thats if its done with any form of skill/decorum (which it never will be)

Lewi, get back down here on planet earth. As the others have said, you might have had a chance at affording a quick-ish car legally within the next 5 years, but you blew it.

If you really want some decent acceleration given your history, get yourself on a bike instead.

Jack

All hint of seriousness that may have remained on this thread fell off here. lol

^ this. Its bad enough having business use, but delivery means carrying goods which means class 3 which means forget modding the car as you'll be paying silly amounts even for standard.

a rumour went about that they were after my daft mate cos he was there with me but hes moved out of town now cos a load of gangsters are after him lol
Fo shiznit. Run for the border bro!

Lewi, I'm in Stuart's camp (oo-er) - I put up with a 1200 til I was 23. Didn't have a problem with it really, but by the time I got rid I had 4-5 years NCB under my belt so could afford a turbocharged car for a reasonable price. My advice would be spend time and effort making the car perfect, keep it clean and tidy, then it really doesn't matter how fast it goes.
