View Full Version : What is this?

I'm in the process of rewiring/updating connectors on the stereo and alarm wiring and generally tidying up the place as it's uber cluttered.

I've come across this little thing, not quite sure what it does exactly and if I actually need it on there.

Its this:

One end goes to a plug behind the drivers side dash, just below the speaker ,directly behind the headlamp switch (it is not the headlamp switch plug) shown below just left of centre.

The other side of this 'thing' is connected to a switch and then connected to my headunit. When I changed my head unit many moons ago I didn't notice this little bit but simply swapped wires from the old one to the new one.

The switch I'm talking about allows me to either keep a constant live to the headunit or have a switched live.

Do I need it? What does it do exactly.

+rep for those that know and have helped :thumb:

Possibly a diode of some sort? Looks pretty bodged on though, twisted wires = bad!

Is it actually helping me in anyway, this diode? Or shall I just remove it. It was wrapped in electrical tape, hence me not noticing it. It's the last bit left in the stereo loom before it's finished.

well if its on the feed for a permanent live and it IS a diode, then its not needed unless there's some other power source tapped in further down the line - which I doubt.

Other thought is perhaps some kind of resistor, but again I can't see why it would need one as 12v will be ok.

Meh, chop it out and see if things still work lol

could it be some sort of thing to keep the voltage at 12v as sometimes it goes upto 13.8 and someone maybe thought it would pop the stereo

It's a weird one tbh.

The switch has three terminals; two are in use. One terminal goes to a terminal on the back of the hazard switch. The other goes to this 'plug' behind the dash to this 'thing' from there to the switch which is also then sent to the stereo wiring loom via a scotch lock.

Would it be better to just stick an inline fuse to it?
