You can acually get away with just hammering the bit in ive seen it done on a let before and boy done it tidyily and looked alot nicer than a big hole.

All engines sit a tad differently in different shells. A conversion that clears with minimal interference in one will need more clearance in another.

Best the create ample room the first time & not be removing the engine again & disturbing your paint etc.

i'll just add that on a spot welded shell, taking th'ommer to it will weaken the welds & if you are going to stitch weld the bay, then you may as well do it right, & putting enough room for maintenance as well as clearance is a good idea

tbh i did my cut out, then trial fitted my engine to weld the f28 mount on. the alternator only goes into the cut out a cm or so. i bashed my gsi chassis in with a hammer but was never happy with it and wanted to do a proper job of this one, as craig said diffrent shells and engines will vary.
but does leave nice clearence for changing the belt etc.
a mate of mine did a smaller cut out on his and the alternator cleared fine but under heavy cornering it rubbed!

IMO hammer time is better. Did this for mine, perfect clearance. Cut out looks naff.
