View Full Version : My garage roof.......
Is corrugated asbestos sheets. Its leaking now in most places everytime it rains and has ruined my shelving in there. Also theres dust ontop of my nova from the roof sheets.Basically its fukkin shagged.
So im thinking while the weather is still reasonable and light nights to sort it out rather than chance another year of it risking caving in and denting my nova.I also want it dry in there as my washer and tumble dryer live there aswell as the overflow fridge. What sort of roofing material options do i have that doesnt involve assuming the position in my local travis perkins etc?
Any help/advice is appreciated:thumb:
is it a panel garage? ie concrete sections bolted together with a metal roof covered in asbestos sheets?
bricks mate with a corrugated sheet asbestos roof
I went through the same last year.
But i had a corrugated galvanized steel roof.
I went with timber and felt.

only thing with felt is it needs replaced every few years, and if the high winds get it its away:(
a would tend to go down the sheet route.
Wind shouldn't be a problem if it's fitted properly and as long as you get the best quality felt/underlay you can it should last more than 5years.
I wanted to go away from the flat roof too.
get the assy sheets off and fit steel corie sheets.piece of pi$$.
only prob you will have is getting rid of asbestos sheets
looks good keif, how much did that set you back?
or you can get some osb board from BQ fit that and felt over top:thumb:
I had steel sheets that leaked, it was the condensation dripping off it that was my main problem.
So when it rained the car got wet, and when it was cold and not raining it got wet then too.
Double

Think he means bitumen sheets, like so:

not full but a few speckles on the roof of the nova, enough to notice anyway

I went daft on the cost of the felt so it lasted.
It was around £800 including the shiplap cladding. Just the wood and felt would be around £500-550.

Well my house is rented off the mrs' mother and i doubt her and husband would pay for any repairs to garage so i was going to take on the cost myself to sort it.Didnt want to spend a great deal tbh as it isnt my house

jesus where did you get that lot from? thats to much...
It's the cost of the Exterior ply and underlay/felt that's the expensive bits. which if your just going to keep it flat, you need to buy anyway.
The joists cost me about £70 for the wood.

Nope, that's everything right down to screws and coach bolts etc.

take a deep breath and.. cancer ahoy!

My roof is the same, i've half-arsed looked into it, and as said, the main problem is getting of the asbestos sheet as your not allowed to break it down :(
nah,asbestoslol
Fair enough, long as its not me filling my lungs with it lol

Fair enough.
Can you still get that corrugated sheet. Not iron, its material. Black. Few sheets of that, some wooden joists...Job jobbed.
Like so..http://www.wickes.co.uk/Bitumen-Corrugated-Sheet/invt/240039
8x4ft rubble bags

lol broken up,its fine.It really isnt as bad as they scare you with, people who suffer from asbestosis have had years of exposure. Is everyone scared of mdf? you should be as that has carcinogenic fibres.Hands up who wears a dust mask when cutting that?
was going to say the local tip will take it aslong as its double bagged. the corrigated stuff isnt actually got that much asbestois in it anyway, its the blue insulation stuff you have to look out for and the pipe lagging

Surely they will either give you guidlines with regards to its removal and disposal or do it all for you??

Well i was a upvc fitter for 4 years and not once did we ring anyone or do owt before removing asbestos soffits or strips off fascia boards on gable ends. And that was for a big company. So i dont plan on doing it now for a poxy garage roof lol
Again enough of the health and safety lol

Exactly, i did about 3 months research/pricing up.
If i'd have just gone to Wickes and bought everything to do the roof/guttering, it would have cost me more than I paid to do the whole job.
I ended up reducing the total cost by almost 20%. :thumb:

Have a read through this regarding asbestos in your home CLICKY (http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:zMWsfYb8KukJ:www.hse.gov.uk/foi/internalops/fod/inspect/asbestos.pdf+laws+on+renting+and+problems+with+asb estos+in+garage&hl=en&gl=uk&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgA5K5ti0crIVJA7njOVUoWU3VDBa6cbrIODnoc of3Xaxl68Po7saAy25zGAZu6hckHYFIWKYnQu5aNMRFm9lpAwu RoI2q5hVgCLSyerX1D-N0UQ30WP8w94PQOp3JawzqTGHra&sig=AHIEtbQZU0gtUMdPqT9NjHVhlES3RR210g) ;)
bought some bitumen paint, going to give that a go to see if that will stop the leaks.Looks like im going to have to chance another winter:(
if that dont work try Acropol it has fibreglass meterial in it. we use it some times as a temp leak stopper..

it won't fix leaks very well....
why not simply put a few batons up on the inside & staple some polythene sheet to it as a short term fix..
corrugated sheets have a limited lifespan & domestic crappy garage ones are the cheapest of the lot..
seriously, go & buy a farmers weekly, or farmers guardian, and find the local cladding company. they will usually have a stack of offcuts, or wrong sheets. then get some 'tek' screws & an 8mm driver bit for your drill, and re roof it.
obviously you need to see the local council for removal of the old stuff..
or wait till a storm & it might just blow off & the house insurance people might just replace it
Corrogated FG roof sheeting. Lets light in, keep werter out, easy as having a **** to work with. Some hefty 6x4 rought sawn timber lengths, make up some joist's, jobbed.
cheers for the advice,i'll see how i get on with the bitumen.I begrudge spending much money on it as its a rented house off our lasses mam and i know for a fact she wont put owt towards it so im just going to have to make do really. What can i do to stop the dust? paint it?
Paint wont stick very well to a frayable surface unfortunatly.
balls
Case of paper suit, respirator & stiff as nails yard broom, brush down internal side & paint with something like an oil based white undercoat? Might end up flaking like fcuk though.
Or create a false ceiling?
cheers mike, its feckin annoying,if it was my house i would rip the full lot down and rejoist and the like.but as i would be paying the lot and for someone elses benefit i cant justify spending much.

I masked up, cleaned up joints with a brush, applied primer then flashing along the joints that were leaking. Bitumined over the top for good measure and its been fine for the last 12 months and should be OK for another winter.
Was going to build another garage so was not fussed long term
That green bitumin sheet is very good, my dad had the non asbestos concrete roofing on a fairly new sectional garage and they all cracked. He has replaced them with the green bitumin sheet and its now fine. All dry and no condensation.
Just be careful bitumin sheet get soft when the sun is on it. If it's not supported well, it will sag.
thanks fellas, its currently blasting it down and the half ive bitumen painted seems dry,its normally created a puddle on the shelf and today its dry.Good times:)

I put just bitumen paint on my roof the first time and it just dried out and cracked. Don't expect it to last long.
