Right ive just been given a 1.4engine off a mate..but whats the best way to see if its actually any good (ive heard it running) but i dont wanna have to swap it for my 1.2 and find out its a load of shit + ill be changing the gearbox as well..so to me that'l be alot of hard work. What is the differnce in performance wise between the two..will it be worth it?? also my mate reckons his 1.4sr can cane gsi novas..u reckon thats aload of shit?? he's got scorpion exhaust,k&n and a cam. Cheers.

i dobt it, not with just those mods.

u will like the 1.4sr especially if u use your 1.2 head on.
should be bout 80-85bhp easy. compared to 55bhp on standard mk1 1.2.

the only way to test if its any good is get it in the car and take it for a run - but keep your engine as a back up. If its been standing for a while dont rag it for the 1st 500 miles or so and even then dont go kaning it. If youve heard it run did you see it when it had warmed up (smoke etc).

I've hone through 2 1400 engines in the last 3 months - still on number 2 but (see carb post) having BIG probs with weber - which is busted!

1400 is a bit more bhp and with 5 speed box (possibly close ration) could be quick off the mark.

It'll be a bit faster than the 1.2 and will be able tro handle the long distances better. If you have a 5th gear and do motorway driving it'll take the revs out the engine.

It might be quicker off the block comapred to a GSi but in terms of top speed dunno...

I had similar mods in my 1.4sr but couldn't keep up with a friends Gsi.

no dis-respect but the guy sounds like he's sh*ttin u.

I used to own a 1.2 and have had my 1.4SR since february.

any nova is a bag of fun to drive but u will love the 1.4 so much u'll wonder how u ever coped with the 1.2.

(wish i'd never junked the 1.2, was 5door Jamaica Yellow but with a worn gear box, worn clutch bearing and the head gasket had gone pop)

so it'd be probably be best to cam up the engine after like at least a couple of weeks to c if the engines any good then?? Also whats all that bout putting a 1.2 head on the 1.4..doesn't make any sense to me (but i guess thats cos i know fuck all bout engines!!) n if u can put the 1.2 on n cam it up, will it be quicker than the standard 1.4sr?? + my mates ses that he used to beat his mates gsi down country road but not topend which is probably true (depends on the driver as well, especially down country roads) Cheers again.

well the theory behind puttin the 1.2 head on is to lower the compresion ratio but if i were u i would just get the 1.4 head skimmed as i beleave it has better air flow and slightly bigger valves but dont guote me on this as im not 100% sure

I read an article by Bill Blydenstein that said the 1.4 SR engines have very restricted inlet valves, to become sporty but economical, If you get a head specialist to increase the size, you can gain a vast amount of power (15-20bhp), which with the mods you alreay have, would put you on par with a Nova gsi, without this you will be spanked!

the 1.2 has better flow out of all the heads i believe. The 1.4 head is meant to be the worst. Stick a 1.2 or a 1.3 head on and the cam from the 1.4 and you'll be well away. The 1.4sri has bigger valves i think but 1.2-1.4 are same.
