View Full Version : what cam and gearbox
after debating what route to take with my engine and nearly going for a 14 16v ive decided to keep it an 8v.
mines a 16 8v (x16szr) using a pierburg carb. ive just bought a gte head from a mate that has already been ported and skimmed a bit. so im going to fit that and a cam then save for a set of T40s.
what im looking to know is what cam to use as i dont know anything about degrees and stuff with cams.
also what gearbox would offer good acceleration? and would lightening the flywheel make much difference?
thanks

When i built my convertible engine (E16SE) I used and AST 2 kent cam with uprated valve springs and new follower pads, I am also running twin 40dcoes on it, the cam and carbs set up worked well on my 1300 nova so it should work well on a 1600 . If you are planning to run carbs on an E16SE (nova gte) head you will need to blank off the EGR take off in the middle of the head on the inlet side.
i also had a e16se with piper fast road cam and pulley with arp rod bolts and lightened fly wheel among other bits and was a realy good little engine fly wheel made a good difference reved like a motor bike
the egr is blanked of already. looking at the ast2 that is listed on the kent website these are the details
Part No Part Type Description
AST28 Camshaft Supersports Stock rod
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC
Supersports Stock Rod 3250-8000 7.31 11.80 303 Deg 45/78 78/45 106 Deg 0.25 I 3.43mm
with my engine only reving to 6000 as standard then will this cam not be to high of power band? i dont have much of a clue when it comes to cams so any help will be greatly appreciated
thanks

was looking at my gearbox for a number and it says w418 so its a wide ratio. what was the f13cr box out of? and what code to look out for? c what?
can anyone shed some light on as to what cars the f13cr came in. going to scrap yard on friday
nova gte\ gsi also some Corsa's too.
thanks is it a c374 or what is the code on the end plate?
the c or w means close or wide - the numbers after *should* be the diff ratio - but not always lol, so in the two above 4.1 or 3.7

You may find that the AST2 is only listed for the smaller carb engines, the above cam is AST28 which will be no good as a road profile :thumb:
got a new gearbox yesterday and fitted today. f13 with c379 ration. definate improvement over the f13 w418. thanks for the help folks
