hi was just wondering if my kent cam should be timed the same as a standard cam because when i stripped the engine the dot on the cam pully was about 3-4mm to the right of the dot on the cambelt cover when the timing marks at the crank end of things was lined up perfectly.
oh it has a vernier pully aswell by the way (dont know if this changes anything)
any response would be greatly appreciated as dont want to ruin my engine when i come to run it :)

My ast2 was like that i could never get it bang on both marks but i was using a standard cam pulley, with a vernier you should be able to set it bang on both marks and then go get it set up properly.

cheers mate :thumb: should any rolling road place be able to set it up properly or should i look for somewhere that specialises in tuning as i will have to trailor the car there as its not currently on the road

You would be best off to phone the place up first as you want a tuning session rather than a power run, they will just advance/retard it on the vernier till its right.

To time it up properly, you also need a angle gauge on the crank pulley and a dial gauge to find "true" TDI and full lift on the cam, but all this, you might not reap the full benifits without a vernier pulley

i thought at first that the tdc mark on the bottom pully could have been out a fraction but upon stripping the engine it seams to be pretty true. i just want to get the engine running quite well before i take it to a rolling road and have the rest done properly, just dont know how big the margin for error is wen rebuilding these engines as ive not done one before

Can't you time it up to the marks you had before?, assuming the engine was running ok before you stripped it, you'll be close enough for a start up.

You probably wont be able to time it up using a dial gauge since the hydraulic lifters will cause you to have erronus figures. Most verniers have advance\retard figures, set it at 0 then use that as your straight up timing mark. Line up the bottom pulley marks and the top pulley should be more or straight up. Turn the engine over on the bottom pully to check for any valve contact.

i was going to put it back together the same way as it came apart but i never heard the engine running before i bought it so decided to start from scratch and then get it fine tuned on rolling road.
