Change the coolant temp sensor,

As above/\ cts! I had that problem, if it's faulty the engine will be burning more fuel because it thinks it's colder than it actually is..

when i took it for mot they said it was to do with the air and fuel as the person i bought it of must have messed around with it.you can smell its rich as soon as you start it up

Air and fuel is all ecu/temp sensor controlled! the big clue being spI! Replace the cts, as already suggested.
