Hi everyone i thought i would introduce you to my latest acquisition - its a 1976 Kadett C estate for those that didnt know
Ive had it a couple of months now so decided it was time to get a project thread up.
Basic run down of the plan of action is restoration of the body back to its former glory and a more modern more powerful engine.
I'm going to go with the GM 1600 16v engine from the likes of the corsa B and astra F as they are readily available and its not to difficult to use most of the 1.6 corsa vxr internals in them and the turbo bolts up to them. Plus the fact they are lighter, cheaper and more readily available than the commonly used C20LET 2lt 16v turbo engine. (and i already have most of the bits needed from my track car that will have to wait for a bit)
And of course i will be uprating the rest of the suspension, brakes, and drive train etc to suit the new motor.
Firstly the shoddy mobile phone pics i took when i went to view it:

I'm not sure what's with the paint on the roof?

In my single garage

Simples!

All in all i think it could be a lot worse
Once the Kadett was home and settled I decided to start having a poke around the car to see what was actually hiding and what i was going to need to fix it
Initial signs of crispiness

Not too bad considering the date of manufacture

There were a few other areas hiding on the O/S under the wing but i had spotted them previously

Once i had sussed out exactly what was needed I started to strip the car down a little more (bearing in mind i space is tight so i cant go mad) and started removing rot.
Here are some pics
I started here

Front grill out without breaking any clips thankfully

Some wire wheel action to remove yet more crud etc
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/kadettcwagon225.jpg
And on to attack the spot welds when i could find them that was as they were well hidden. Even rubbing the area back with sand paper, the wire wheel and a scotch brite disk didnt prove that helpful.

This then brings us up to last weekend when i got a good stint on the car.
I got the car up in the air and started to strip the engine down
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate002.jpg
Coolant drained then rad out
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate003.jpg
Disconnected the few wire that there are

Leaving me with this
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate010.jpg
Next i set about box and prop centre section removal

With the block and box together i couldnt resist trying it in the hole
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate034.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate035.jpg
Im happy with the space around the engine and box
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate036.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate037.jpg
Given that the engine and box went in the hole with little issues i slipped it back out again and started on the engine mounting plates
The easy side
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate038.jpg
all mounting holes square and on the same plane
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate039.jpg
A little CAD (cardboard aided design)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate040.jpg
Next the other awkward side
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate042.jpg
35mm to make up
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate043.jpg
So i started with this after some measuring
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate044.jpg
That turned in to this to stay close to the block and avoid the coolant pipe

http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate049.jpg

More next time - Opinions and comments welcome

PS sorry for all the pics at once lol
looks cool :) paint on the roof will be heat from the sun I imagine, was it sitting outside for a long time? the crosses are where the strengthening in the roof is, which probably acted as a heat sink.

absolutely awesome thread already pal, just sat and read the whole lot :thumb: will subscribe definitely :d also rated it 5 stars lol
WOW
where to start, looks liek you have your work cut out with all the rot, at the top of the wings, where you removed the welded part, they commonly rot, mine had rotted completely(see my thread for pics i think)
set up looks excatly the same as the chevette.
when you/if you remove the subframe, be careful with the two bolts behind the springs, as they are on captive nuts, and one of mine rounded off!
you found a manta box! how much did you pay. and good luck finding the shifter lol. mine came with fortunally.
depending on what prop you use, i have a manta A one with the right end for the gearbox, but wrong probably for the axle.
are you using the standard axle?
and you dont hang about putting the engine in lol.
if i were you, i would do what i done mount wise with the rubbers, as the kadette ones are tiny, i got mine of rally design and screw straight in :)
great work, and any questions just ask :)

Cheers chaps - hopefully more to follow when i have more money/can find the parts i need.
Most of the panels i need to get me started have to come from Germany as they dont really do Kadett stuff here and i need £500 worth  and thats pattern panels not genuine.

Not a clue if it was sitting outside for a long time it probably was but i think it may have had a roof rack on too.

According to the kadett forum this one isnt that rotten there are some complete sh!tters out there.
The setup is very similar to the chevette other that the inner wings are longer apparently. How did you remove the original engine mounts as mine are held by captive nuts and wont move, i already have new uprated mounts from ebay for £5.99 so all is not lost if i destroy them to get them off.
I'm going to use a Reliant Scimitar 4HA axle and 4 link as the standard axle and even the manta axle will die with 200 + bhp.
I got the manta box for £102 i didnt think that was excessive.
manta gsi box? gertrag 240.
all the parts are still available, so it's not that bad.
for it's age it isnt in a bad condition.
last year a complete new GM front was sold for 650 euro :S

the rubber small ones in the cups?
if so, i think i put two nuts on the top and just undid them?
if not, there is some kind of big flat nut on the bottom IIRC, get a cold chisel on that...

They look like my old Irmscher rims! They black with a polished face & rim?
I sold mine to a guy called Mike iirc, down south with a Mk2 GTE Champion. They were brand new from Irmscher Germany, wish I had never sold them.
Still have a couple of the Opel centre caps kicking round which I had misplaced at the time I sold them.

Im not sure eactly what they are i thought they were expression/champion wheels that had been powder coated and dimond cut - they guy i got them off brought them from germany for his mk2 golf only to realise they were vaux offset and looked wrong. £80 later and they were mine :d

They do look like Irmscher rims, you should be able to tell by the gap between the rim an the spokes. The spokes on the expression rims go further out into the rim & the Irmscher & champ rims have a gap which makes it easier to diamond cut the rim.
I recognise those wheels. Opel Monza seems to spring to mind? Maybe not
edit - no not off a monza, its killing me not knowing because I recognise them. Nice project btw I read it the other day

I think the chevette and Kadett engines are different so that probably explains the difference in mounting positions

Afternoooooon!
Just thought i would add a few engine/turbo details to the pot, most of you will have seen these if you followed my track day nova progect but i thought i would put all the details in one place.
As said befor im using the 1600xe as a base engine (from the likes of the mid ninties corsa and astra) i will be keeping the head, block and crank from the 1600xe then i will be using the turbo, rods, and pistons from a corsa vxr to turbo charge the 1600xe along with some stand alone management.
The block its self needs to be boared out slightly to accept the vxr pistons (there are 3 different sizes available) and this is the ideal oppertunity to have some under piston oil squirters fitted too. The inlet manifold will need to be a custom job as the 1600xe inlet is useful for nothing and the corsa vxr inlet doesnt fit the 1600xe head (yes i have tried).
Here is the turbo when i did the initial mock up last year when i planned on fitting the engine in my track day nova
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo007.jpg
As you can see the turbo fits the 1600xe head bang on
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo004.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo005.jpg
There are however a couple of initial complications that need to be solved
The turbo out let is very close to the oil filter mounting location - so i will be relocating the filter
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo008.jpg
And the original compressor cover is an awkward shape so i will be modifiying it or worst case replacing it.
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo009.jpg
And here is a sample of the corsa VXR pistons i will be using
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo002.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo003.jpg
And a comparison of the vxr piston and a standard 1600xe piston
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo013.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo014.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/1600turbo015.jpg
The corsa vxr produces 189bhp as standard and im looking for ' somthing over 200bhp' so i decided to hybrid the turbo to help me towards my goal
Basically i have gone for a simple compressor wheel upgrade allowing for more lower down and mid range torque and a bit more at the top end as well as the obvious power increase that a higher flowing comp wheel offers.
Another beneficial factor is i could achieved the same power as a standard vxr with lower boost pressure due to the increased ability of the new comp wheel over the standard wheel, or more power at the same boost pressure :D
On the lathe

Here is the standard vxr compressor wheel, its a fairly new design of wheel with a cut back skirt and is capable of flowing 190 bhp easily and 220 bhp at its upper limits

And here is the upgraded comp wheel - its basically and audi TT 225 bhp wheel so its well capable of flowing 225 bhp and would probably see 300 bhp with higher boost

Its clear to see by eye how much larger the TT wheel is
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Track%20day%20nova/redophotosforfolksy2010072.jpg
To finish the upgrade some material needs to be removed from the back plate to accommodate the new larger TT wheel, the shiny ring in the inner circle is were the material was removed from.

I also had the compressor cover machine bead polished for good measure and fook me did it come out well!
The polished finish is achieved by the high frequency vibration of stainless steel beads apparently - no messy buffing involved Benn! I did do some prep on the casting before hand although they do turn out well with out and pre at all.

Here are some other bits cleaned i cleaned up at work
Sump - i dont know if this will need modifying? why do people opt for the 'big wing' manta sump? is is just for increased oil capacity?

As you can see it already has positions for the injectors and the original fuel rail will suit larger c20let injectors
Then I will combine this with somthing like http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/D-Shape-I....sQ5fAccessories
for the plenum section
And a few other bits

I know it wont fit...i asked 'i dont know if this will need modifying? why do people opt for the 'big wing' manta sump? is is just for increased oil capacity?'
Not will the manta sump fit  basically do i need to 'big wing' this sump or will it be ok as is?
the reason for the big wing is to clear the x member in rwd cars where spacce is tight. if it was me i'd foam the inside of the std one and have done.
Christ awesome work with the turbo and comp wheel.
I've seen the bead polishing before, its ment to be very very good, but not many people that can do it...

im modifying my x16xe sump a tad for a little more ground clearace.. just chopping and shortening it by half an inch or so..
i thought the 'wing' mod manta owners did was to help against starvation as theyre cast sumps arent baffled..?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/peester/GLSengineswap026.jpg
the rack sits under the front half of the sump I believe, the "wings" are for the capacity lost where the rack sits.

Its got a GTE skirt on her!
mk999999999999999999999 is right, a manta sump has the deeper part of the pan on the other side, to avoid the steering/front axle.

Ok so all being good i think i have sourced the bits i need for the gearbox fingers crossed!
I had quite a busy weekend (a trip to Beaulieu auto jumble and a 400mile round journey to collect an axle) but I did managed to get a few bits done in the little time i had on sat afternoon, but not much.
I made sure the new engine mounts would actually sit on the cross member as they did look quite large (a bargin at £5.99 posted from ebay) they are uprated ones for a range rover V8 apparently.

Remover the wiring loom from the engine bay
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate093.jpg
And tucked it back through the bulk head
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate094.jpg
Then removed the heater box and fan along with a selection of debris

So that was saturday - sunday was road trip time and thankfully it was drama free, i left mine at 10:10 and got back at 17:35 with my parts on board.
For the sum of £120 i got one scimitar se5 axle complete, the prop end to suite and 5 rostyles i think i did ok.

nice axle, will you be keeping the watts linkage?
Count Vaux Alot
13-09-10, 02:14 PM
No mate the watts linkage wont be used as i'm going to utilise the standard panhard rod mount on the shell for ease.
ok kool, if so id be strengthening the mount, i posted a link to a kit on bmw's chevette thread. they crack off from the shell. is it lsd?
Count Vaux Alot
13-09-10, 04:15 PM
I know about the mount already - it will be strengthened dont worry - its not lsd yet.
good progress mate. if you want. i can take some pics of my sump in the car,
and some dimensions if you wish.
it is a very tight fit getting the sump in and it would be an engine out job for a sump removal IMO.
and mayhem is right about the sump, its all to clear the steering rack etc.

Hi Guys made a little more progress over the weekend while i wasnt working on my other project (more to follow on that soon!)
Drilled the holes on the o/s engine mounting bracket plate
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate114.jpg
Tapped the holes out on the engine block
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate119.jpg
And fitted the bracket plate (the spacers are only there as i didn't have short enough bolts)
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate120.jpg
Then as i wasnt happy with the n/s plate as it want quite large enough so I remade it in 6mm this time
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate121.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate122.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate123.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate125.jpg
Finally i found the gear shifter but i as still missing the brackets and shifter rod for the time being so i made up a bracket out of an off cut of box section just for fitment purposes
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate115.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate116.jpg
The shifter is now sitting as it should
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate117.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate118.jpg
So the next job was to slip the engine back in again
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate126.jpg
http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg167/Count85/Opel%20Kadett%20C%20wagon/Kadettestate127.jpg
I fitted the sump to see if it would clear the cross member

And surprisingly it appears to (bearing in mind the sump is fitted loosely so will go up at leas another 5mm)
(the spacers are only there as i didn't have short enough bolts)

I am guessing that you will need to fashion a new sump...?
I know they are baffled on the 1.6 16v, but I would have thought you would need to tweak the shape of the 'bowl'

yea it sounds like a b*stard to me then lol id end up scratching my new shiney bay having to get that in there!! it looks like you need some patience for doing it any way lol which i dont have!
i couldnt fit my box with the shifter on, we had to remove it.
but good work on the sump you lucky bugger!

The back ends off the floor by about 4 inches :thumb:
3' is 3 feet!!!!! imagine the fun with jacking that much...
i once swapped an engine in an old pickup after 8 of us basically lifted it up in the air & put it on bales of straw.. not that i'd recommend it these days, but it served a purpose
