May be easy to ppl who's done this before(like yourselfs!!) & i'd probs find it easy myself once I'd done it, but for the first time it sounds scary(as I think you prob would have your time doin the conversion), especially as I would be doing it to my one & only car which means if I do go wrong I would'nt be able to go to work, etc...

all I would be looking for really is summit like a 'step by step guide' stating which tools are needed etc.. like on the guides for elec windows etc but for conversions, I dont want anyone to sit there writing up a guide i was just askin if anyone already has one to hand or knows of a website, if not it dont matter. :|

First engine I ever took out was to be replaced by a valver.....

Tools you need.......a socket set including a 30mm socket to take the drive shafts out..and an assortment of spanners and a trolly jack + axle stands

Buy a haynes as it has everything you'll need to know about the car (useful for the future aswell!)

If its a carb------>carb converion, this will be easiest as it will be a straight swap.

also an engine crane/ block & tackle or a couple of strong people to lift the engine out!

Austin_Nova16

.....or jack it up and pull the engine out underneath....

always good to have a few mates around though to lend a hand!

heres my guid to doin the fuel pump relay

1) sit and think about the wires, (1 day)
2)use trial and error till you have tried everything(4days)
3)ring ste(2 mins)
4)when ste arrives watch him sort it out (aprrox 3mins)
5)pay ste and wave good bye

if you have to rush the job skip steps 1 and 2

i changed mine over in less than a day and that included making a engine hoist out of scaffolding (started at 9am and was driving it just past 2 pm)that included fault finding on the new engine (fuel pump had dried out and so had to mod a 1.2 one to fit)

seriously if its a carb 1.2 to carb 1.4 its a doddle take wire off and stick it on the same place on the new engine
the only extra wire you need is for the autochoke heater and that is taped up in the loom

where bout is it taped to the loom? is it easily accesable? Also how do you need to modify the hoses so they go into the autoc hoke?

so does this take it to ste_sa's house or let him come to you and fit your valver count if iam away up here in scotland???

What does your "services" cost ste_sa?? Do you do the full conversion (welding etc) or what??

when i swaped my 1200 for a 1400 i didn't have a wire for the carb in my loom and i also had to wire in the new coil+dizzy loom.

i fitted my engige in a weekend, it was the first time i had ever done any major work on a car. the biggest thing i had done before that was fit a exhaut and 4-1 manifold to my 1200.

Also Do you live anywhere near Manchester.

the extra wire is taped up next to the alternator
black with a green or yellow tracer

the autochoke hoses t-piece off either side of the heater matrix (get them from the donor vehicle)

yes you have to wire in a new coil but this is 2 wires, 1 ground (take to the gearbox earth point on chassis) and 1 ignition (black which is on the old coil)and possibly a green for rev counter if you have one

thats it

am i right in thinkin if you use the webber 32/34 rather than the pierberg 2e3 you don't need to bother with this as is still a man. choke?

Ste_Nova

Buy a hayens and do it yourself.
when i first come on ere i knew jack about engine cons.
with advice from various sources. (cheers ste and u lot)
i am now putting LET in my nova running phase 2.
first time i took an engine out. took me an afternoon with a trolley jack to lower it out. and on me own.
most of its common sense.

there my 2p's worth

first of all forget about this post as it doesn't mean anything in your case as you will be using a mechanical lift pump which is already on the engine.

Since its your first time swapping an engine give yourself the weekend to do it. Take out the old engine at your own pase on friday evening taking note of what you take off from where.
This way you will have saturday to pick up any bits which you might need (any tools you don't have etc)

It really is straight forward so give it a go and get a Haynes manual.
If ya have any problems there is pleanty of help on here all day every day!!

Can we sue ste_sa if he goes wrong? Lol!

And, can you give a rough quote on fitting a 1600 16v engine? Know you're just going to say ?100 labour, but I want you to put me off the idea...you know? hehe
