How new is new, and how small is small?

Rysee

"Supermini" I'd say as she's still at uni, she has 2-3 years NCB not quite sure.

She just crashed her KA so is very safety conscious and is doing her research into NCAP ratings and the like

New is 4 star NCAP

Excuse the ebay link but this is what I'm pushing towards her

She wont drive a big car. The Tax/Fuel/Insurance has to be mega cheap

I've been to car auctions Baxter and watched 2003 plate Mondeos go for less then 1999 Clios. Madness

I can't find a 1.4 TDI in budget, there's 1.7s but she'll reject them with the engine size.

This looks the trick providing it actually has mot

She won't have the Corsa C I've tried, they're ten a penny and mean I don;t have to take her too far to get one

She likes Clios not sure about 206's

If its safety you're after, you can't beat a smart car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJHpUO-S0i8)!

Top of my list would be the likes of an Aygo or Yaris. Wouldn't bother with a 206, far too unreliable.

AlexW
30-08-10, 01:37 PM
Fiesta will be dog****e slow.

As said ignore 206/saxo/106, all made of tin and im fed up of working on my mates 206, every week something goes wrong.

you lot have only just reliased that big cars dont sell lol.

and fiesta is a good idea, 106 there are loads lol

If you get a lupo, avoid the 1.0 (painfully slow!) and the e models, get an s model if you can. (e/w and c/l) 1.4 16v is 75bhp iirc, sport in petrol mode is 100bhp and is quite a giggle.

Hmm, i'd be wary, such low miles and seems too cheap? Log onto clublupo and have a butchers through the f/s section. Don't forget the arosa, not quite as good looking but cheaper than the lupo.

Rysee
30-08-10, 04:34 PM
Yeah I looked at Arosa's once for a girly mate they're not as nice inside and are generally plain.

I'll put some of the cars to her

That Silver lupo looks like a typo for that mileage and I bet it has not mot hence clearance

Odd ball choice , a little bit dear, but quite funky, safe as houses, £30 a year tax and mega mpg.

30-08-10, 04:41 PM
id of said a 106 quicksilver.. or if she can strech a gti, very nice looking cars, mate never had a problem with his so im gonna get it off him as i found insurance werent bad on them and i have no no-claims. brothers had a 206 xsi and thats never let him down since hes had it. all he needed was a new tyre here and there

Rysee
30-08-10, 04:44 PM
I like the choice John, 3k is upper budget though, she'll go to that at a push

30-08-10, 11:28 PM
Does it have to be a diesel? If not then you can have my pug GTi for between your budget. VERY cheap to run imo and when it does break (aslong as you drive sensibly it wont be that bad), all the parts are dirt cheap.

1.5d nova with a full roll cage cheap safe and economical

i wouldnt buy vw,peugeot/renault,kia,etc i would stick with ford, vauxhall and honda.

Paul
30-08-10, 11:49 PM
Get her a van, VW Caddy FTW

Rysee
31-08-10, 09:31 AM
haha after seeing crash tests she wont touch a 106/saxo... i wouldn't let her anyway she might aswell have a Nova

She's got her heart set on a Polo now. She saw a 02 plate 1.2 in a local garage with service history very tidy, but it was 3k with 65k miles I think it was. I think that's way over priced for it's year, i said offer him 2.5 but apparantly he wont budge at all.

What's your thoughs on the Polo around an 02/3 plate John?

Stuart

FFS women are a pain in the ass to buy cars for.

Has she actually tried insurance quotes for the bigger engined cars (eg the 1.7's), or looked at the tax etc?... She might be plesently surprised. And given how ins is stats driven, I'd guess a 1.4tdi fiesta which would be popular with the ladies might get claimed on more than a 1.7tdi etc...

I've driven a 1.4tdi fiesta and it was a total riot, not slow, FAR from it infact!!

As much as I hate "dubbin'" lol I'd rate a lupo highly as there is tons of room upfront, handles well and it generally a nice little car.

Although £3K will get her a Saab 9-5 tdi, 45ish mpg, Nothing will damage it on impact, cheap tax etc

Rysee
31-08-10, 09:57 AM
I need to sit down with her with a list and get quotes and stuff.

I drove a Fiesta 1.4 TDCI at the national day... I nearly burnt out the clutch haha. My mates on standard suspension kept up with my Nova on coilovers. It wasn't any faster then a 1.2 nova though... But what is? Lol

Get her a KA, just make sure it's got low mileage and good history.

CLICKY (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201034366815901/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-from/3000/model/ka/make/ford/page/1?logcode=p) Something like this maybe. :)

yaris here, avoid the 1.0 its too slow, and the derv is gash. 1.3 or 1.5 t sport.

John
31-08-10, 10:38 AM
polo is good, make sure if it's a 9n it's had console bushes, and it's 12v.

Rysee
31-08-10, 11:26 AM
Haha she's just written off a Ka she doesn't want another

Cool John I like her getting a Polo so will make sure she gets the right one.

yaris is a good choice I like my nans 1.3

Stuart

tbh writing off a KA is the best thing to do to them...

Note NCAP tests are a load of **** imho ;) Like all tests, the cars are made to pass them and real world impacts dont happen in labs ;)

Sloth

yeah, look at the crash with a 05 plate clio and a 93 740 volvo 5th gear did at 60mph, the clio folded like a tin can, the volvo withstood it really well. the only reason alot of cars got ncap 5 or 4 was due to the airbag designs which are based around a 32mph crash. also alot of manufactureres got ncap 5 stars on a certain model and ried to pass this off as all the range.

This one, where they conclude the small car is far better off than the Volvo? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBDyeWofcLY

id have to agree mate my mate crashed his missis's ka when we were in our teens! it was a 40 mph impact but wow it was funked lol

Stuart
31-08-10, 01:16 PM
People seem to misunderstand a trashed looking modern car for an unsafe one.... they are designed to absorb the impact and not send the full force into the passenger compartment.... Thus have to crumple up like a piece of paper.

What is telling is when you do a non NCAP test on a car ;) lol
