Just a quick one guys.... Say you have a standard 204bhp let!
What's a ruff guide on tuning made simple I.e parts and price.. To achieve xxxbhp??

how many bhp do you want to acheive?

Benn

Ph2 chips. And say a grand. Get you close to 280brake...

Balley

Thats alot of money, what would the grand be spent on ?

I was just wanting a guide really pretty much how many pennies = how many bhp lol I'm puckin my car up 2week on sat so I'm gonna get it on the dyno to see what it's making 1st. Il be using it as a daily driver so I dnt want silly power to become in reliable.

Fmic,
ph2 chips,
I think your meant to fit a higher flow fuel pump.
Xe inlet cam and adjustable pully.
+ other bits..

Sure with that Simp's was close to 280.

More you spend the more power you get.

Front mount £80

Ecu £200ish

Thats all I can seelol

I dont think you need £1000 for ph2

And some run a 3.5bar FPR

Balley

How much power is yours benn, what have you done to it?

Surely 204bhp is plenty though

Benn

Mines standard power, just with a fmic and a chav valve.

Std power is easily enough as you can get to 100 very quickly. But i might ph2 it for a laugh..lol

I'm sure mine will be fine then ;) iv got a fmic and a chav valve... And what seems to be a bigger fuel pump iv only took it out once before it was reshelled and it scared the crap outa me lmao!!! Ben in standard form..... What I wana know is what can it blow off the road?? :D

To be honest a standard let is more than enough for everyday use. I spent close to 3k on getting my engine rebuilt, my engine and was running 280bhp before i rebuilt it but will see how much it is once i get it remapped. But all depends on what you want to do to it and how much you want to spend. Imo i think you have enough power there for everyday use still going to be quick :)

If your engine is in decent condition then get some Phase 1 or Phase 2 copies from ebay and stick them on.

Uprated actuator would be recommended and i would make sure you have a new standard pump and clean filter and injectors.

For Phase 1 you use the standard fuel pressure of 3.0 Bar whereas Phase 2 needs 3.5 Bar.

The maps on these chips are based on standard engines with standard injectors and pumps. When i fitted a Walboro pump mine was over fuelling alot so i reverted back to OE spec pump and all is well.

Cost you around £300 for chips, new OE pump, cleaning injectors and forge actuator or equiv.

Tbh i dont really race that many cars any more. Just don't see many.
But Golf R32, Scooby, had a play with a modded type R.

what phase do you upgrade injectors?

mowgli
25-08-10, 09:16 PM
right until the first corner anyway..............

i am expecting to get abuse from mig members for this, but i believe that playing with a LET costs you about £10 per hp.....when you include the obligatory rebuild, and then finish off the development that gm didn't manage to do.

what phase do you upgrade injectors?

Well if your going above P2 then i'd consider it but then you would need to manually set the fuel pressure using an aftermarket device which i don't trust. I also experimented with 'Saab reds' which also caused massive over fuelling. Providing everything is tip top you don't need to change them unless going for P3 or custom map.

I would also recommend getting it setup on a RR to make sure everything is ok, they can then set your actuator and tweak fuel pressure if you have an aftermarket device. Worth noting that to increase the fuel pressure on standard FPR all you do is 'squash' it a bit and hence thats why the ones regal sell are always way off what they are meant to be.

well with the car are apparently vxr blue injectors and its got a chip from regal he said think he said it had a switch on it or something.

they havent been fitted yet,

All this turbo stuff is new to me lol

No one has mentioned exhausts & downpipes yet.

Re the comment on overfuelling with a walbro pump; the reg determines the pressure, so any fuel pump (assuming its MPi spec) should see the same pressure at the rail. I wouldnt trust a 25 yr old pump from a 1600 Nova to fuel a tweaked LET tbh.

Likewise choose injectors wisely, guessing fuel pressure & injector combo's is asking for trouble (bore wash or leaning out).

Also the old XE inlet cam with a vernier set 1/2 tooth retarded is good for torque figs & few bhp. But most of all get it setup & verified on a RR with use of a wideband Lambda, or regret it all.

Basic tuning consists of phase or Evo chips.

Exhaust as mentioned needs to be sensible, 2.5" minimum

FMIC is required for any upgrades as is a uprated fuel pump of some sort.

Injectors will do 280 quite happily, worth getting them cleaned though or swap to VXR's with a 2wd cosworth regulator.

Anything over 280 really requires a better turbo, I would imagine a dead stock engine could handle a Evo turbo conversion, ideally to make the most of that you would want a new ecu and then it all starts getting a bit expensive.

Evo turbo route is approx £500 for turbo manifold and other bits required, it will run off a chipset as well, just not as well as it would from a better ecu.

The engines aren't that bad, they are old and generally they get a bad rep as people without a clue put them in their nova's corsas etc.. and don't know there **** from their elbow thus meaning the installs crap, dangerous and obviously unreliable at times.

I built a engine for a mate a LONG time ago now, its done over 30k now faultlesly with it being stock for a while, then phase 3.5 and then it had a Cossy T34 fitted and is still going, the only uprated engine item was some ARP rod bolts, still no smoke, rattles or anything untoward and he kicks the thing to death.

Over the years of reading forums etc, most issues stem from looms or the odd old sensor (poor installations aside). I would certainly get the injectors cleaned if I owned one or tuned one.

When i did mine i got a report with them that gave before and after flow rates and patterns, it was like night and day. I now do this with all my cars.

With regard to an exhaust i run a 2.5" system and that seems fine above 5k and doesnt seem to restrict. If i was to move to a larger turbo from the stock unit i would consider going to 3". I know Rich Metcalf who i bought my shell from was running P2 chips on a standard engine with an old T3 and made 300hp easily. He also managed 160 mph at brunters on an F28 which is pretty ridiculous.

You can never have enough power, trust me!

My setup is 350bhp, look in my WIP for spec.

I am a beleiver however of P2 not being 280bhp, more like 240 max.

Having had a '289bhp' P2, then having a genuine 246bhp on Omex management, the difference was very noticeable.

All LETs are 100k+ now, or 95% of them are anyway, so if your doing it, i would factor is the cost of a basic freshen up IMO.

I would guess my 30-130 is something like 10secs dead, to give you an idea of performance, a few people off of here have been in it, and maybe a few more will have too after Combe?

Thats alot of power Paul! Im actually running a super chips Phase 1 chipset at the moment that is rated at 240hp, when i had the car setup with an XE inlet cam is made 240.1hp which i was very happy about. I will move to Phase 2 at some stage so ill be interested to see what it makes, i think it would be above 260 though considering the raised boost pressure.

Even now i think its too much power on the road so i would factor that into any potential modifications. Track is completely different as you well know.
