Hello all

I've just got hold of an 2.0 16v engine that look just like a red-top but the plug cover is black and has ecotec stamped on it??

I believe that the engine came out of one of the last Calibra's and was wondering if anyone has any information on the engine? Is it the same as the red-top? If not, whats different?

Thanks

if its a L shaped ecotec cover then its still a c20xe (redtop) matey they were in late calibras etc

My mate had one in his m reg astra gsi

It looks exactly like this except its got ecotec on the cover, it doesn't have a dizzy(there is a cover where the cam shaft pick up would have been) oh and it doesn't have the turbo;)

Thanks Shaun.
With it having ecotec stamped on it I am guessing it's not the same BHP as the earlier one's but I would just like to know if the internals(block, crank, bores, pistons, head and valves) are the same.

It's exactly the same as the earlier red 'L' engine with cat, Vauxhall changed the plug cover as they were getting ready to swap over to the 'real' ecotec engines. Just a marketing exercise.

the internals arent 'exactly' the same as the early ones mate.

early ones have forged pistons iirc

early as in astra gte early

Vauxhall had ecotech on the engine which enabled them to be able to keep using the XE in racing as long as possible
Regardless of what it says on the tin if it has an L shape plug cover its an XE if its straight its an ecotech

Early XE's had mahle pistons although some later xe's had them, lighter cranks, coscast heads up until 89 i think, distributors until 92

hope this helps

there is alot more differences than that, block strength, rods, inlets, ecu, pretty much everything.

i know theres more than that but they seem to be the main bits that seem to stick in peoples minds, pretty much only the same from first to the last in the inlet cam
