Going to pick up a car tonight but there's no mot but has tax. Is it illegal to tow it with a rigid bar? I no a car with no tax ain't allowed on the road, but is it the same for no mot even though it isn't being driven....properly.

Iirc it needs insurance, unless being recovered but not 100%

If all 4 wheels are on the road - it needs MOT, Tax and insurance.

had trouble with this in the past mate, pc plod waited till we got a recovery truck to tow the car, said if it didnt have an mot the wheels should not be on the public road and we could be charged.

Cheers everyone , that's what i thought. Will have to use the trailer then. Hand brake cable is snapped though so will need severely tied down!

Maybe dodgy but i've heard that as long as your car is booked in at a garage for its mot and you are driving to that garage then your alright. Not tried it myself but have considered it a few times. If your willing to try it i would consider a few things: make sure its running (not only got three wheels, no brakes etc) and don't use main roads (motorways, dual carriageways etc) as they have pnc cameras which will pick up the fact that the car has no mot and will send you out a fine through the post. Also you could easily blag a policeman as long as your not driving from scotland to cornwall or something.

/\ the use of the term within reason is in the rules.... use a trailer or beaver tail to move it. that is the only advice i'll be giving.

anything else is at your own personal risk

Personally this is a no no.

Whenever I have done this, the car always rocks around etc.

Wrap arond solid suspention parts, and tighten the car down, rather than tighten the wheels down, and leave the car to rock around:thumb:

if you are used to transporting ****ters about I guess that hold true matt, but you strap the wheels down and let the cars suspension do the job its supposed to

puff... using 2" webbing & tiedowns, or wrap the strap round the top third of the tyre so the webbing crosses & then properly pulling it down stops the whole vehicle moving about, as the tyre is trapped & can't roll.

if you pull it down on the suspension, you run the risk of a sharp bit cutting the strap, or a component bending i have tied down 10t machines round the wheels & they simply can't move

i had towed a car on a rope with my van and it had tax , m.o.t and insurance but no front end or engine so that might have been dodgy and we even cruised past the local police station lol

just because you managed it & didn't get pulled is not a good enough reason to encourage anyone else to do the same.

Matt you're so full of ****, it's unbelievable! I've strapped loads of cars down (in all imaginable states) and NEVER had a problem. You obviously just don't know what you're doing.

As far as I no the only time your allowed to drive with no mot is to and from a test centre. I just wasn't sure on the legalities of towing although I assumed it would be the same. Only 15 miles ish away , all back roads etc. But with terrorist threat here at the minute police check points are likely and it's not worth the hassle..... Holy fook I think I am beginning to grow up and become half sensible! Lol

Yes driving too a book MOT is legal, but you have to be insured to do it. And have to be careful over the taxing. Your ment to leave the car at the testing station and go on foot to get tax, but that's not always that easy.

Almost all recovery compneys have scraps that are made to slip over the wheels to strap them down.
I my self have used these when working in the bodyshop to collect damaged cars. The cars moves as that what its built to do when going over bumps. It's body roll.

My god you dont half talk some sh!t.

Try taking an ambulance on the back of a tilt and slide recovery truck and then talk to me about body roll.

I, Means myself.

I have moved, helped move etc loads of cars, from minis to full rally cars.

I always strap em down my way, and have never had an issue.

It works, so why jump down my throat?
