View Full Version : c20let wont start
my c20let wont turn over :(
all earths are fine, and all dash lights up as should..
what can i try?
So it doesn't turn at all? starter connections all ok?
yeah starter connections seem fine, car has been fine for weeks.
fitted astra dials into the car today, and it wouldnt turn over.
i didnt check to start it before the dials were fitted though as car was fine the other day
no doesnt turn at all. nothing mate
you have 2 options;
1, its got a fault with the wiring, are you getting 12v to th starter when cranking? try giving the starter a smack, it may be seized
or
2, the engines nipped......

Do all the dash lights come on?
Ecu primes?
Then bump it, see if it frees off the starter:)
what you mean by the engines nipped rob?
yeh get all dash lights

Gotta be ign switch, alarm/immob or earth related me thinks.
Any lights on (dash) when keys are not in ign (car locked)?
no lights on the dash mate when ign off.
whats the ignition switch mate?
tap the solenoid with a hammer, to rule that out

where the key fits! lol
ok mate will try that on the morning.
when i turn the key, there is nothing at all. dash lights dont seem to dim either.
that sound like solenoid could be stuck?
lol craig... i now feel like a tool lol
after i tried turning it over a few times and still getting feck all, there was a tiny amount of smoke from there

Check your fuses mate.
serious southie?
will take a look in the morning. what fuse could have gone?
stuck it in top, let the handbrake off & rock it back & forth. the ring gear can be just a fraction out & the starter won't engage.. i've seen it a few times over the years.

its two screws to reomve the cowling lol
cowling is off anyways lol
are the plugs the same on any vauxhall? as never see novas on the road round here never mind the scrappies...
i will rock it in the morning mowgli :)
and its 2 seconds to rock the car first. all you have to do is stop it when its still in gear, make the engine stop in the wrong place & i guarantee it won't turn over.
it did stop when it was in gear lol, my drive is quite steep and i stalled reversing it up lol, then left it there for a few days...

as mowgli says or use a screwdriver to bridge 12v to the starter via the ignition switch
if it was a ring gear / starter engagement problem you would hear it clicking though.
See if you are getting 12v to the solenoid (black and red wire)
that will narrow down the source of the problem!

no. the design of a big block must put the starter & ring gear very close to each other. i've seen it a few times & never heard a proper solenoid clunk...

If your abit rough like me.
Grab a wire, and manualy run it from the + side off the batt, to the solenoid, this eliminates the chances of duff wiring in the car:thumb:

in my experience you woud still hear it trying to engage
It wont be the starter - it would at least click if that was the case - the dash lights would go dim also when you put the key in the start position...
Ign switch ftw!
are the ignition switches the same from say a corsa or astra?

Shaun the reason I said check your fuses was because you said it smoked out of the ignition, just thought it would be worth checking them to see if anything else may have blown.
This any good? Clicky (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk:80/Vauxhall-Ignition-Switch,90052497,Nova,Corsa,Tigra_W0QQitemZ17050378 3313QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=129058868272&rvr_id=129058868272&cguid=a35e28e412a0a0aad3a5a785ffd87873&autoredirect=off)
yep. but the wiring on post 1995 stuff is different. 1991-1994 astra mk3 switches and locks are the same.
right havent changed the ignition switch yet...
but ive noticed with the ignition on one of the relays is clicking every few seconds(with nothing turned on)
anyone got a diagram or know what relay does what? unsure if this could be related?

Try and locate the relay (near fuse box) and then check the Haynes...
So when you put it into teh stard position - is it drawing any current? You can tell this by the dash lights dimming etc....
Ifnot then it is prob the switch - just have a wobble with the plug and it will prob burst to life!
changed ignition switch today and no joy...
got under the car and smacked the soleniod and it fired into life :)
Cheers for your help guys
5th post in, damn im good lol
