View Full Version : *HOW TO* remove inner wings
as there is no bodywork section i'll post this here
firstly this is a rough guide and is by no means a full how to,
first youll need the wing off, suspension off, front bumper off, headlight and indictor out, washer bottle off, header tank off, coil off etc etc then get a drill with a good spot weld drill and drill out all the spot welds i have marked in yellow where i found most of the welds and green where there is some seam welds to be ground out, i have not got a pic of removing the headlight panel, its only 4 welds iirc and now some pics
its worth noting im removing these panels to reuse in another shell so no " id just use a grinder" comments

are there any panels you have to sacrifice to remove this, i have seen you have bent the headight forward?
yeah the area where the headlight bottom sits has 4 spot welds, im not reusing this shell or front panel so i cut and bent it out the way but if you need to save it just take your time and there is no damage to other panels, the worst bit is the welded section in green, when grinding it out you need to make sure not to cut into the A post and only grind the support panel that is being removed

it was registered as scrap so no log book, i was going to let it and track it but cant be bothered so its now a donnor for metal parts

you using the panels off this for your gsi then ? shell looks quite clean
either the gsi or gte, i'll rebuild the inner wings using repair section as im still not happy with them, there is a little bit of rust on them,

okay, fire wall removal today, first off the tools used, big electric drill for all the easy to get welds then the small air powered 90 degree drill for the hard to get ones, this panel only took a total of 1 hour to remove BUT the shell is completely bare so access is much easier, all the yellow dots mark spot welds, the 2 black dots mark the battery clamp bracket and the single blue dot marks the only spot weld that was to difficult to gain acces to, although a swift chap with a flat blade chisel after all the surrounding welds have been removed is enough to free it off,
also please note that on the pictures where the spot welds are marked in yellow is where i drilled them from,
PLEASE NOTE THE INNER WINGS DO NOT NEED TO BE REMOVED BEFORE REMOVING THE FIREWALL BUT THE SUPPORT PANEL MUST BE REMOVED ON BOTH SIDES TO REMOVE ONLY 1 SPOT WELD ON THE O/S AND 5 ON THE N/S

Not many nova firewalls have been removed like that! lol Top job, this is like a how to build a nova from panels, the way factory did guide lol
ok kids the scuttle panel today, tis a tw*t of a job and one i will tell you how to shortcut after the pics,
again the inner wing support plates must be removed aswell as the windscreen, but all other parts could be left if required including the firewall which i had removed earlier,
basically there is a long line of spot welds along the edge where the bottom of the windscreen sits, all of these are clear to see so i havent marked them in the pics this time, also drill out the first 2 welds that go up the A post on each side as the scuttle panel sits in the middle of 3 skins on metal.
you can see in the pictures that at each side of the panel at the corner of the A post the panels have been braised together, i tried to apply heat to see if it was only a solder or possabley a lead filler but the weld held fast. I used a hammer and bolster to clear around the panel and to find that the scuttle goes beyond the A post flange and into the A post itself and also has 2 spot welds that cannot be reached by drill as they are in a cavity that cannot be reached either inside or out, using a bolster just makes a huge mess lol
read on after the pics for my advice on how to remove this panel and replace without making a mess of the A post

as you can see the inner section are to hard to get to, i went this extreme to remove the panel in such a way that a friend can use it.
to remove this panel easier use a 4" angle grinder with a 1mm thick plasma cutting blade ( i got mine from machine mart ) and simply cut very carefully along the seam from the corner of the scuttle at the bottom of the A post along the braised weld and down the edge of the A post to remove the braised weld, do this at both sides ans drill the spot welds along the top of the panel and its a much easier job.
P.S there are no pics of the o/s as its the same as the n/s and i did'nt have much time.
o/s engine mount today, not a big job but handy to use this for a F28 conversion, again yellow marks where the spot welds are and where i drilled from, you may need a hammer and bolster to free of this part as the metal is thicker and the welds are stronger as a result.

Doing a similar job at the moment and your info is spot on. How do you find the time mate?
im lucky that i dont need to rush the jobs, this shell is giving me practice and knowlage of how the panels are put together so when i get to the gsi i dont get any nasty surprises like i did with the scuttle panel,
better to share and help others if i can.
seat support ( or whatever its called, same as usuall, yellow dots mark spot welds and where there drilled from, no other panels need removed to remove this part.

n/s chassis leg, now im aiming to remove the full leg in one piece, it is possable to remove the forward section of the leg from the bulkhead only, first the inner wings have been removed ( it would be possable to leave them on and remove the spot welds that hold it to the bulkhead )
the sound deadning on the floor well will have to be removed, then locating the spot welds and drill them out, again yellow marks the welds.

here you need to drill out the spots on the outer sill

then fold up the outer sill and drill the spots that hold the inner sill to the chassis outrigger

now remove the sealer at the bottom of the inner splash guard and drill out the spots here that again go onto the outrigger

you'll also need to drill this one weld from here aswell as its not accessable from anywhere else

into the engine bay now and drill these ones that hold onto the lower bulkhead crossmember

Tbh not as many as I thought lol, about 8 iirc, I'm Scottish so I use them till there done, resharpening on the bench grinder helps,
also thinking that when I remove the o/s leg I'll do it in 2 parts, firstly removing the forward section then the underfloor part seperate.
n/s chassis leg continued,
inside the car once the sound deadning is removed you have this lot to drill out, just remember the floor is very thin in comparison to the actuall leg itself, again yellow dots mark spot welds and where i drilled from,
you will notice that the seat support bar that runs accross the car has been removed, this is not required to remove the leg, it can be left inplace and the spots that hold it to the floor at the same point as the leg can be drilled easily.

now to the underneath, as there is no access to these welds from inside the car they must be removed from the underside

then with a little pulling and making sure all the welds are free and not still attached the the body ( sometimes you may find the weld has a little skelf of metal still holding on ) this is what you get off,

now this one im going to remove the forward section only, for the simple fact that most chassis leg repair sections only go to the bulkhead and not fully under the floor, the same process can be done on either leg as the weld positions seem to mirror themselves,
only one pic as i was getting tired and hungry lol

not got the floor, lol unlevel ground is ok for removing chassis legs but not for fitting them,

the chassis legs are ex stock, so eBay and forums sometimes bring rewards, it's getting harder to find o/s legs now so salvaging useable parts is always handy.
Pete and Stu I'll do the roof last then, I've measured and marked the shell to see how out of shape it gets when the floor is removed so by the time the roof is off it'll be like jelly lol

The n/s one is a donor for my project ( click the link in my sig ) also they have been removed as practice and I need the floor for repair sections.

Yer it would look good and totally standard - much easier that cutting the Td mount out of another shell. Did you see the job I made of the other Td engine mount I did?
yeah i did, it would be a shame to cut a brand new leg for a mount tho lol
iirc if the shell is bare its about 2 hours to remove the full innerwing and strutt top and about an hour the remove the leg, not really a huge job but not one for beginners which ive seen that your certainly not lol

No mate I wouldn't cut and shut the mount if I had the whole leg I only used the mount it's self the last time as the rest of the leg was rotten.

Those Thatcham books are good, got myself one a while ago.
Also stumbled upon something else interesting on Ebay a few years ago.
Nobody bid on it including myself but contacted the seller after the listing had ended and I got it for a steal, I think I may only have paid for the postage.

Its a build manual for the whole vehicle for the factory, I have never seen one before or since.

Unusually its all written in German & English, no wonder the Spaniards couldnt build the things properly ;)
Anyway the folder has numerous sections on how to build the car up from a single panel to a complete shell and the same for all the other steel components like the rear beam, pedal box, seat frames etc.
It is incredibly detailed including every panel part number(Even the individual component parts that make up a panel that were never available to buy) and every weld join etc

The book is dated Feb 1982 which was 6 months before production even began. Its in suberb as new condition, you wouldnt think it was nearly 30 years old. (Not even a spot of rust on ther lever arches lol)

No, a seller in the UK. Tried to find out where he got it from but with no joy.
Must have come from Germany or Spain originally but how it found its way out from the HQ/factory, god only knows!
That's a epic manual !! must try and find one lol
it's very true what you say about the individual parts that make a panel, I've managed to aquire sevral small plates/parts that I can use rather than replacing a full section, it's more the way that they are put together that is the slow part figuring out, ie how to remove the full boot floor lol i'm not looking forward to that bit,

Rear chassis leg N/S
so these legs have been cut from a crashed SR but can be removed from a complete car in the same process.

this would be the under arch view, notice how with the use of heat and wire brush the sealer has been easily removed

this would be the hardest area to get to, im my pictures it is the inner sill you see but to get to that you would have to remove a large section of the lower quarter panel to gain access

ideal if like me you need rear legs, both these will be cleaned up and used on my GSI.
