re-seating valves should cost no more than £50

You can do it yourself, I beleive Iainel has some good pics in his WIP

Everything you need for £6 delivered (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Chemico-Valve-Grinding-Paste-Lapping-Tool-/220451449692?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3)

that's the stuff I used, but I adapted the wooden stick to fit my cordless drill lol, not really a recommended method to use a drill btw.

lapping in the valves is good for the soul. when done properly, you have the satisfaction of knowing your head is in a way better state than when you started. you also need a good valve spring compressor, ask your mates & see if a garage will lend you one, cos they can be expensive, but i got a guddun off the bay for £6.00 posted

Check your valve guides for excessive wear, makes lapping the valves useless if they're worn beyond spec.
There used to be someone who did head/eng work, not too far from you, think his name was Gavin Nimmo?

Rip Gavin.
Its going to cost to do it right no matter where you take it, but it is worth the cost.

Just to add.

Lapping the valves in is done with a back & forth rotary action using grinding pastes, course then fine. Using a drill to spin them up in one direction is wrong.

correct

this is why I'm a bad example, you may think using a drill would save time and effort but it's not the proper way,

you can get an attachment for a drill to lap them in properly, but it costs quite a bit

Hardly satisfying as you put it.
