90% of the time my battery light is on but I'm sure the battery is charging fine though

any other reason for it to be on?

hmm strange one, I once knew of a skoda that had a 're manufactured' alternator on it that the charging light worked backwards lol. When the light is on have you checked the charge rate?

How do I do that?

the ign switch could be faulty, the alternator could be faulty, yet still putting a small charge in. i had an astra td that ran for weeks with the light on. till i eventually got a new diode pack fitted. or there could be a fault in the wiring onto the dash

when the light is on,

it WILL NOT be charging

put a multi meter across the battery when engine is running with all lights and things on it should read about 14.5 volts at about 2000 rpm

Well how long does a battery go for without a charge, I do have one wire that's not connected to the alternator and I'm sure it's black but I could be wrong

there wasn't anywhere to connect it to as I've converted from a 1.0 to a c14se from a Corsa

The alternator needs 2 wires - the main lead to the battery and the small lead (blue + White) which goes to the dash, also make sure you have connected the earth lead from the head to the alternator!
You might have a surpressor connected to the back of the alternator too as they are normally black wires but not having it connected won't affect it's running
