View Full Version : MK1 Nova, sleeping in a barn for years

Since I wrote my other car off, with the money from breaking it, selling the shell. Refunding my old Insurance etc. I've bought myself a slightly natty MK1 nova, with the Intentions of bring it back to life, making it into a bit of a lane-slag and general fun tin-can to drive in.
Car was fairly rusty around the back-end and arches, but with a few evenings on the welder it passed M.O.T with flying colours, only advisories were a couple of fuel lines starting to wear out (hopefully braiding everything when I get the cash).
Anyway
As it was this morning, knackered paint, faded everything, melted bumper (welding with bumper still on ). RIP old car in the Rally trailer.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/1.jpg
Awful paintwork + dings all over body, generally looks like an absolute dog. But you're supposed to look through that, which I do hence I wanted this car.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/2.jpg
Interior like Baghdad, needs a good hoover and I'm aiming to re-trim everything, flock the dash etc etc. (I need a new steering wheel so bad, standard Nova wheel is like driving a bus. Racing wheel here I come).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/3.jpg
And again, looking pretty sorry.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/4.jpg
Faded plastics, melted bumper. Bad paint etc
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/5.jpg
Engine bay, the detailing guys will love how clean it is . However, it's relatively rust free, well there aren't any deep rust patches anywhere, just surface. I will be cleaning + painting whole bay.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/6.jpg
Battery tray, I've luckily avoided the common problem of them rotting through. However it is full of water and crap which needs sorting before it does rust. (battery is going in the boot anyway)
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/7.jpg
Wheel well fairly tidy too, just surface rust which I'm going to treat with rust-eater, and re-paint.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/9.jpg
Sills a bit messy, but strong, no rust damage. Will sand + seal + paint them.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/10.jpg
Underneath the headlights is starting to get eaten away though, I'm going to inspect how bad it is, probably will need some welding done here though.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/11.jpg
Front panel has rust patches on it, however nothing deep, so shouldn't need welding, just treating. (Will be coming back to this, sticking bumper on for the moment).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/12.jpg
Bare interior, in fairly good nick (surface rust as per).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/13.jpg
Add a new bumper. (with different cars reg on :P). Oh, and some MG spares + nice slicks for the backdrop.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/14.jpg
New rear bumper (before any work on the paintwork, treating bumpers etc).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/15.jpg
Picture isn't too great, but all the paintwork is like this. A fine layer of surface rust, mud, dust and other goodies cooked on for a few years. (feels like 240 grit sandpaper when you rub it)

T-Cut is for pansies. Out comes the Rubbing compound.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/17.jpg
Couple passes with the compound.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/18.jpg
Couple more + some polish. Looking much better. Still wanting to do a couple more.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/19.jpg
Linseed oil on bumpers (works brilliantly. would suggest this to anyone as a trim restorer), starting to compound other panels etc.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/20.jpg
1 pass of compound down this side, getting there slowly, need to do alot more.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/22.jpg
Front end is starting to look the part, well, I'm starting to like it alot
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/21.jpg
More pics, updates etc to come
Not bad
Mk2 bumpers on a mk1 is a big no no tho
Mk2 front bumper on a mk1 is just RONG! Looks good apart from that :)

I didn't know the difference, just came with the car :)
Any mk1 bumpers for sale?
Look at the massive gaps under the lights ;) Try and locate a cheap sr/gte one, if you're wanting a full length bumper :)
MK1_Ben
04-08-10, 09:06 PM
I figured the panel gap was because I hadn't properly fitted the bumper yet (only slotted in place because I'm sorting the front panel). Guess I'm wrong though :)
This is my first time "bringing a car back to life" though, and I'm new to Novas. So don't shoot me when I do things that are considered wrong, haha :D

Condition looks way better now it's had a compound, mk2 bumper on a mk1 is like a guy wearing a thong....it's just plain wrong.
Cool progress.

Looks in great shape to me, especially if its been sitting unused for ages. Agree with others, the mk2 rear bumper doesn't look out of place because the rear end is the same on both flavours of nova, however the front bumper just looks all wrong with the full fat headlights.
Convert the front end to MK2 spec, will look better that way.

I'm gonna keep my eye out for a full length MK1 bumper :)
Thanks alot for the positive comments guys, really gets me into this project :)
Any suggestions/ways recommended to do things, hit me with them. As said, first time restoring a car, and first time working on a Nova. (I'm a qualified Mechanic, but I spend my days working on MG Rally cars).
IMO get the battery tray cleaned out asap
Have a look in the forsale section few bumpers in there, failing that I could help you out with some.
yukky ugly mk2 bumpers for the loose :(. if you do intend to get the dash flocked then theres a deal in the club section ;)

Might have to take you up on that offer, I'll see once I've sorted out the rust, which is the most of my worries at the moment :)

Another update.
My little sister (who is only 16, and doesn't actually know anything about cars...), just turned up with a replacement passenger window, as it was missing on the car. So will be fitting that up today :)

Not as rotten as first suspected which is great news .A white Mk1 is a fantastic project pal. Get a mk1 early all in one bumper or a mk1 SR bumper and keep it all dead clean and simple:thumb: and dont wander too far from factory spec etc !!
nice project mate:)

I'm looking to Cam the Engine. I was told I can swap my standard cam straight for a GSI/GTE one?
Anything I'm missing out here, or?
Matty Winslade

Yeah i think this is true but also i think you'll find that actully the 1.3/1.4 SR cam actully has a higher lift :thumb:

Isn't the 1.3 cam rare as hens teeth though?

Dont think so pal. Just look for someone braking an SR and ask for it in the cam carrier. Best bet is to post in wanted section mate :thumb:

Spent a bit more time on it, didn't get much done today really.
Fitted new window, surprisingly easy compared other cars, was happy about this :)
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/1-1.jpg
re-fitted the standard interior, it's most likely going to be changed but saves it sitting around in the garage
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/2-1.jpg
Attacked the other side with compound (engine bay still needs tidying, last on the list though).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/3-1.jpg
Gave whole car a quick wash-over, already looking miles better than when I got it.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/4-1.jpg
Manly lunch, apologies for no images of the Pie itself, I had eaten it.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/5-1.jpg
Removing rear-wiper, going to smooth over the hole. Was very impressed by how clean inside the panels, and the mechanicals are for a 20+ year old car.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/6-1.jpg
Compounded rear-end, and removed stickers from window.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo011copy.jpg
Used a bit of elbow grease on the cam cover, just to see what it's like underneath. Looks promising.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/7-1.jpg
How car is looking at the moment, as said earlier, already a vast improvement of when I first got it.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo013.jpg
Think I've sourced some MK1 bumpers through a friend. Sorting out the wheel situation on the weekend :).
Once I've insured myself on this, I'm going to take it to a friends garage and steam clean the underside, arches + Engine bay (where possible). Then start to seal + paint them.

brilliant progress on it mate :) i wouldnt bother putting a cam in it, the GSi cam doesnt have a lobe for the mechanical fuel pump and a used SR cam will make next to no difference. save your pennies and fit a complete 1.3 SR engine and box

Thanks for the positive comments guys, as I've said previously in the thread. Really makes me happy about working on this project :)
Rich, I'm wanting to stay 1.2 though. Once the car itself is sorted and I'm onto engine work plans are to attempt to squeeze as much power as possible out of the 1.2.
My old car (Rover 200), I went through the route instead of "modifying" the Engine, just dropping more powerful ones in. (First dropped a 1.6 in, then had it already to fit a 220 Turbo engine in, before I wrote it off). This car I just want for my own enjoyment to "Tune" the little 1.2 Engine as highly as possible, rather than drop a more powerful lump in, as it's a restoration I want to enjoy, and learn things etc as I go along. Not a serious "performance" build.

Thanks, next in line is a new MK1 rear bumper as my old one was shagged so had to make do with a mk2 rear. New wing on the passenger side and then the dents etc.
After that I'll sort some wheels and suspension out :)
Just waiting for Summer really, as I live completely out in the sticks so the car never stays clean when it's wet/winter, making it impossible to do any bodywork on it until dry spells :(
Like the look of this :thumb:
Glad you said mk1 rear bumper, looking good with the front bumper and fogs!

Oh, I've also just bought a grill-badge for the early bumper from Southie. So should have it on and painted by the weekend :)

keep at it
Well done mate,i really like the look of that.Early bootlid would finish that off

Just bought some new 60-40 shocks and springs. Hopefully as I've ordered them early this morning they'll arrive tommorow so I'll have them on by the weekend.
Should be slightly more presentable in time for the South-West meet :)
Looking good mate only thing im not sure about is the green towing eye?

Really want summer to come up, it's not "mint" in person haha. Plenty of dings all over which I need to sort, and a previous repair on the rear arch appears to be going rusty so I'm going to have to cut that out and re-weld it at somepoint.

Got the new shocks + springs on the front today, rears are being a c*** so waiting till saturday for them when I can use my friends ramps to get the lower bolt undone.
However, handles like a dream already. Most fun handling car i've ever driven, need to get used to it now as it's fairly planted, but in the wet tends to be quite skitty as it's solid.
In short, very happy. I'll get some photos when it's light

As said, fitted front shocks and springs. Rear's I'm doing tommorow as they're pretty seized. Ignore the dirtiness+sorry state of the car at the moment, I live out in the sticks and have to drive through muck everyday thanks to this rain.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo019.jpg
Also my Grill Badge arrived today (cheers Southie), tempted to keep it black on white, as the colour theme of the car is satin black and white, I think the contrast of the badge will look good. (it's dark currently so won't know for sure till tomorrow), otherwise I'll just paint it black with a white griffon.

Rears still aren't done, didn't get time to get it on the ramps today.
Badge however is painted and on. In these photos you can see the damage on the valance pretty well, that's the downside of getting carried away on the backlanes :] Need to re-spray my bumper too, didn't fare well with the winter.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo035.jpg
I love the look of it front on now (Ignore the phone camera skills).

Re-fitted the interior, sorted out some the surface rust on the rear arches, applied a new bumper stripe then gave it a wash.
A nice mincey photo opportunity
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/mince.jpg
Looking through my garage I also found my lower-trim for the front valance, so once the valance is repaired it will go back on. Also found my standard mudflaps (ones with the griffon badge) for the front but the clips are broken. Anyone know of a way to fit them without the clips as to match my rear ones?
Iv not seen this thread before, just been reading it and im liking it very much! You have done a great job and looks proper tidy, you really made somthing out of it! Badge looks fab, i personly didnt mind the mrk 2 bumper but then saw the shocking big gap between the lights and bumper and thought eww, deffo looks top with the mrk1 bumper. Well done! Ha ha i like your plans with the engine, keeping it real am really interested in how it goes having a 1.2 myself. Loving the white steelies too They look mega! I dont like steelies like that but you really pulled it off! Sorry to go on but im proper impressed lol Positive rep for you!

Thanks :)
It's standard 1.2 carb with a 4 speed box. Is nice and nippy in 2nd and 3rd in the lanes, but completely gutless up hill and top-end. However being nippy in lanes is all you need to have good fun in a car :).
I like having steels myself too haha, not to everyone's taste but they work. Ideally I want some 13/14" ones with a little bit of dish (not banded though) in white to complete the look. I did see some on an Astra estate before but can't seem to find them anywhere (they weren't Astra Sport steels)
Elstro1988
06-02-11, 09:10 PM
That's a beautiful looking Mk1 you got there...and kudos for sticking to seeing what you can get out the 1.2 engine rather than simply dropping in something bigger.
I really like the all-white Sport/Rallye look too!
Also....I actually liked the curvy Mk2 bumpers on the boxier Mk1 styling *runs for cover*
What size are the steelies you got on now? Iv just brought steelies and was gonna do them white lol, just such a nice diffrent colour for them, iv got sri ones so will have to see if they suit it. Agreed all the fun down back lanes, i use them for work and i love it!
MK1_Ben
06-02-11, 09:19 PM
They're 13" standard merit ones.
/edit.
Found the steels I was looking for, definitely from an Astra but does anyone know what type (so I can locate some when I buy a set).

14", decent width, slight dish on them (picture doesn't show too well compared to IRL) and I like the design of them, paint white and whack some low profiles on and I'd be away.

Small update.
New Valance (and Wing but I didn't get a photo for some reason):
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo044.jpg
Found my front genuine flaps, need a cleanup and a new method of fitting them (as the clips on them are rotten).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo046.jpg
In the process of stoneguarding the insides of the panels.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo052.jpg
Couple coats of filler primer
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo055.jpg
Valance started, needs a sand down and some more as some areas have reacted where the stickers where.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo056.jpg
As much as I've done this evening, several spots where they've reacted (mainly due to the sticker residue which I must have not cleaned thoroughly), so more sanding and spraying will be required.

Little update.
DIY sound deadening. Good use for some spare loft insulation, I filled the whole inner skin of the rear with it. (works really well suprisingly, probably keeps the car warmer too).

Looks like a right twisty lane slag :d your bumper's wonky though :p
MK1_Ben
13-02-11, 08:10 PM
I noticed that in the photo when I uploaded it ;)
Proceeded to go outside and fix it, the wings don't have the clips so the bumpers only held on with the bolts on the bumper bar. A slight jiggle and it's straight again :) Oh, and the rear bumper is wonky as I'm still using a mk2 one. Looking to get a GTE rear one ideally.
mk1nova_rich
13-02-11, 08:11 PM
All it needs now is a set of bike carbs :d
MK1_Ben
13-02-11, 08:14 PM
Potentially next month if I get the info I need (as per thread aha). Otherwise I'm just going to get another standard Carb, rebuild it nicely and whack a K+N on it.
Bodywork is really bugging me, but no point even touching it until the summer's here as half the lanes to my house are practically mud when it's raining :D
mk1nova_rich
13-02-11, 08:23 PM
Just get some Waxoyl thrown on the underside until we get some drier weather and you can sort it properly.
Regarding the carbs, speak to that lad you know about jet sizes... i'd recommend fitting some smaller jets before you try starting the engine with the carbs on then go from there :thumb:
MK1_Ben
13-02-11, 08:28 PM
I'd build up the carbs, manifold etc then drive down and get him to fit, jet and tune them.
Guy in devon called Dave Baskerville if you've heard of him. Proper good at setting up and tuning old cars, well anything with carbs really.
mk1nova_rich
13-02-11, 08:30 PM
Long way from me but I have heard good things about a bit of an old-school tuner down that way.
Seriously, if the carbs you have are anything like mine you won't get the engine to run on the standard jets... mine flooded in about 15 seconds lol
MK1_Ben
13-02-11, 08:31 PM
I mean drive down on the standard Carb + Manifold with the new setup in the boot aha. Not drive down on an overjetted Bike setup ;)
mk1nova_rich
13-02-11, 08:35 PM
Ah right, my bad lol. I knocked up a manifold out of steel I "borrowed" from work. Bit heavy gauge but it did the trick. The only things to consider are the vacuum take-off on runner 4 and the water outlet from the head

A refurbed standard Carb with a shiney K+N is becoming more and more appealing :)
Do the flat ones have the nipple for the breather hose? (like on the standard Airbox).

you not heard the noise bike carbs make... I'd find that a lot more appealing!! lol K&N's don't usually have the breather outlets, which means you will have to modify the filter or just fit an oil catch tank

As said in the other thread, a friend has a stupid power 1.3 Rallye on bike carbs, does sound nice :).
When fitting a catch tank though, doesn't it still need connecting to the intake anyway to create a vaccum?

You don't want a vacuum in a catch tank, it should just be vented to atmosphere via one of them small K&N/Pipercross filters

I meant as in, the standard breather is in the intake as the air passing over it creates a zone of different pressure, which in turn relieves the pressure from the crank as high pressure will always move over to an area with lower pressure.

Breather's can be vented to atmosphere, but in most standard cars they are routed to the inlet manifold and any oil spray is burned along with the fuel/air mix
the crankcase will be under pressure anyway though, it doesn't need a vacuum, the whole point of it breathing is to relieve pressure from blow by. Decreasing crankcase pressure has it's own advantages but you're talking a whole different kettle of fish and an expensive dry sump system there

Thanks guys :)
I assumed it was essential to have it connected to the intake as it would rely on an area of lower pressure to vent. Guessing I was wrong :). Might just buy a catch tank, new carb, nice filter etc. Good start to get tidying up the bay going really.
Have to spread Rep around before I can give it to either of you :)

I like to get things done haha. Not sure what to do next really, got my new valance and wings in the bodyshop as we speak, rear arch could do with an afternoon and it's done.
Might get a nicer interior, any ideas on type?
/edit. Parcel shelf and the "side bits" which the rear-belts and shelf attach to; I didn't have any of these with the car.. are they easy to obtain? and what sort of price would I be paying for them?

Name change ftw lol
Really like your motor, what's planned for it Ben?
MK1_Ben
08-03-11, 09:33 PM
Name change is FTW :) (thanks Jack haha).
Main plans are to get the bodywork to a "can take it to shows" quality, as it's covered in 50p dents all over, slightly crusty (but repairable) arches etc. Potentially lower it another 30-40mm (it's 40F-60R on 13s at the moment, but if I stick with these wheels should be able to to go 80F-100R rear).
Sticking with the 1.2 carb goodness, but want to source another 1.2carb engine and give it a nice rebuild, tidy and paint the engine bay and whatnot.

Thanks :)
Shame, not a major concern however as they often pop up with Gearboxes for bugger all money. And mileage isn't much of a worry as it would be rebuilt.

Spotlights are now off, I like it more.
Also, should be collecting my new Wing from the bodyshop tonight, I'll weld on and paint the valance over the weekend if the weather's any good.

Update.
Did a deal with a friend who works in a Bodyshop, traded some out of date harnesses from the Rally Car for him to prep and spray a wing.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo072-1.jpg
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo073-1.jpg
Took old wing off, underneath was extremely mucky but rot-free. No pictures but I did clean it all off, give it a going over with some kurust then stone-chip the inner wings.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo074-1.jpg
Splash guard was also mucky but rust-free.
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo075-1.jpg
Turned out the damaged wing that was on there anyway was a pattern replacement part, my new wing (which is a Hadrians? panel from my local parts dealer actually was a better fit).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo076-1.jpg
Hammered the front valance back into shape to fit the wing (I am fitting a new front valance in the coming few weeks though).
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo078.jpg
Hopefully, should start cracking on with sorting out the dents for good this month.
Good work, where do you get friends where you can trade car parts for labour lol i need one

Lower again, 100mm all around after a small road trip to meet Plug for some 100m lowering springs (which I then fitted to my Bilsteins).
Looks higher on the front in this picture, but it's the angle :)
http://i1000.photobucket.com/albums/af126/bsrally/Photo084.jpg
Handles really well surprisingly, on proper rough roads it does get pretty achey on the back but everywhere else it's got brilliant road holding now.
Also resprayed my boot at last as it was covered in scratches, Rattle-Cans ahoy, did take a few hours doing it, wet-sanding etc (doing the job properly) and the finish is pristine :) (You can see how low it is in this photo, the mudflaps are standard size and in the normal mounting position, about an inch from the floor :) )

First update in a while.
Finally back on the road, after what turned out to be a sheared cambelt + pulley. All back on with a whole new ignition system. :)
Just a mincing picture:

I also stripped the black paint from the cam cover, gave it a wire brush over then lacquered it. Voila, brushed cam cover (a new gasket was fitted at the same time) :)
