You're thinking of Bovington (where the Tank Museum is). I lived near there for most of my life.
i was driving from folkestone towards brighton and there is a range along the road edge (mod) and the sh1ts started firing as i went past. not at me obv....

well, as long as you think that, then its ok..........
i always felt sorry for prince william, when he did his basic training.... when they were on the range, and the training officer yelled 'fire at will'

Its all one mahoosive range, the bovington-lulworth-wool area.
They used to fly the Apaches on the ranges out there. The locals got annoyed with them flying round at night so bought a bunch of those gazillion watt candle power torches and shone them at the aircraft during night trials.
Clever, considering they were live fire exercises
so back to my previous point..... is there a non sudden form of gunfire???
