Soo...After two months of constant (and i mean at least 4-5 hrs most nights) trawling the Internet on auto trader and ebay i finally found a diamond amongst all the dam right SHAT that's out there..

I found a 2001 51 plate MK4 Astra 1.8 16v SRi in Midnight Black (black with silver metallics)
It was local to me (just under 30 miles)

The add was on ebay and said FULL service history, so i liked what i saw and went to view it, turned out the history was indeed FULL and not patchy crap half history you normally find etc, has had a service every 6 months for the first 3 years then annually there for after.

It's just had some work for this MOT, full exhaust etc, so 12 months MOT and 6 months TAX, all very solid/no tears in the seats like most Ive seen..

VGC body work, only has very slight scuffs/surface scratches in places, worst paint blemishes are some acid grazing left from bird **** left to sit on the paint to long on the bonnet, but i might get it painted some point to sort this..

so what you think??

Just fitted some flat blad wipers, and ordered some late 04 spec rear light units, the smoked/tinted type.

Plans are refine it slightly inside, new leather gaiters etc, maybe leather wheel of 2.2, arm rest, new rear tyres, late spec head lights, 30-40mm drop maybe, and a twin tail back box, induction kit etc..

Very tidy car :)

Surely G3 and a decent machine polish would get rid of the acid grazing on the paintwork?

I'll see what some of mates in the car body trade say, as im sure someone can sort it cheep enough.

If the bird babba has been there long enough to burn the paint then compound wont shift it as it damages all the layers of paint, getting the sections repainted will be the only way really, nice tidy looking toy though Scott! :thumb:

Ive seen this done, is good idea if the lights are mint etc, but mine are not mint, i would like to get some projector "shark eyes" for it, but there costly etc.

So might look into the cheap back fronted ones, see if they fit/work OK?

Nice buy Scott, good to see you went for a mk4. Top cars! But im biased lol

I would definently do something with the wheels, they look crap silver imo. Either dark grey or white id go for.

Liking the smoked rears, where did you get them from? Want a set for mine.

Also, my GSi front headlamps only cost me £38 off Ebay, look miles better than the silver oe ones. Chuck a cheap set of H7 hids in, and they look sweet!
Obligatory badgeless grill and lowerage now!! :) lol

Are you sure its not Sapphire Met black? Mine is iirc.

Still got the twin Irmy backbox off mine in my parents loft ;)

Ad, im 100% it's Midnight Black, as the code is Z 298 (has silver metallic in), where as Sapphire is 2HU-20R, as for rear lights, got them from Astra parts 2nd hand GM's.

Cheers Si, and Chris i did look at the 2.2's but couldn't justify £350 more to insure it!

Well it was an easy thing to do (even with the rain!) and took me just under 3 hrs from start to finish, but my light units are a bit shot to be fair, as the bit thats ridged by the bonnet edge is really badly scuffed/heat/sun damaged etc, so do want new ones at some point, so any way i did them today.

Nothing crazy, just lower it 30-40mm
(it will come down more then that, as im sure the spring kits are way off!)

Maybe some Corsa C SRi wheels in the future or just buy some others say pro race 1.2's in white etc..
But will be getting mine done white, as silver looks gash!

Then basically irmy front lip/skirts, and a nice back box, then just make the inside really nice.

White on black looks well. Tempted get mine re-coated in White.

Good work on the lights, they look well!!

Just get some ebay coilovers mate, you can still only lower it 30/40mil if you want to, but the options always there for 70+ lol
Mine still drives/handles spot on, and its down well over 40mm, 75+mm at a guess.

Yeah but it's the cost VS ride compromise etc dude, really want it to be cheep, and not rattle my brains out, i like the feel of the ride (bump/rebound) now but hate the high stance, just want it down say 40mm MAX!

Scott, anything more than 40mm, and you need adjustable droplinks.

Something to do with them running an accute angle? Worth considering etc:)

I have asked about mine being 4 stud, seams that some of the early cars were made as 5 stud, as they did a NONE turbo GSI (basically a 2.0 sri)
All the 2.0-2.2 were 5 stud, then it looks as if some of the late 1.8 SRi 2001 like mine were basically an sxi shell with all the sri stuff etc, so there seams to be some mismatch cross over stuff out there! lol trust me to get one in that period..
And i also have the late z18 small block i believe (im still waiting for the log book)

TBH not alot.

The main difference between the X series and Z series 1.8 engines are that the throttle is cable on the X series and "fly by wire" on the Z.

Also the X18XE1 is 115bhp and and Z18XE is 123bhp.

But the X18XE1 has more torques.

Never played with the clutch Scott, so not sure.

yep im a fan of the small block 1800; the x and z switch is emmisions rating but as said - the throttle, and some breather set-up and ecu were changed..
the engine code is only written on ledge where block meets gearbox, to the right of exhaust manifold.. easy to see..
and abs light would just come on at ignition, if fitted, wouldnt it..?

Nice one Scott, they are very nice cars. It seems we are all at it at the mo. Buying new cars that is:thumb:

Right so a few months back i decided i wanted a Irmscher front splitter, went hunting on Astra owners, found a few but they were not cheep, nor was anyone willing to post them etc, so off to ebay i went, again the price of Irmscher stuff sometimes baffles me, but i manged to hunt one down for £60, quite cheep but it needed allot of prep work! (no pics of it before)

So then i thought that the rear might look odd with not having one, again there silly priced but found one in a breakers yard in stourbridge for £40 :thumb:

And you guessed it, i then went looking for the skirts to match, just makes sense eh!
Found some on ebay for £80 posted, snapped these up as i think the seller didn't know what they had as 2nd hand ones Ive seen go for £150 a pair etc.

So when i got all the bits i then set about finding a new sprayer as the guy who did both my other cars just was not good enough for my likening, left too many poor finishing issues etc, so once i found some one to do it the car went off to get them all prep/spray/fitted and the bumpers also got resprayed to get rid of any nasty scratches/scuffs an chips etc.

The guys done an amazing job, the finish is what Ive always wanted on my nova's (slightly gutted) and they look bang on, I'm now wandering if it needs lowering, or just a back box instead, as the rides quite a nice stance with the kit on, let me know what you all think?

So pics before/afters.

Yeah clutch is hydraulic, think mine needs a top up!

Headlights went in the oven heat setting 190 and i kept testing them to make sure they didn't get too hot, but was only about 8-12 mins i think, obviously depending on oven and if pre heated etc...

lol Thing is Stu i keep toying with the idea of selling this one to make some money on it (as in from whats been done, and on the price i paid) and then buy a later model, as the later ones 53-04 plate ones have the Turbo pro-drive kit and very highly spec'd due to the last of the line in the mk4's, and there about 3-4K for a really mint FSH example etc.

So last night i typed tsw into ebay, and found some wheels that looked quite nice, i believe there tsw Nurbergring RF's?

And they are 16x6.5 et45 So could be used on the Astra as i plan, or maybe on the nova!
All in very very good condition.

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/3144/53223410.jpg

Placed them on a box next to the Astra for an idea what they would look like.. now to decide what color, metallic graphite grey, or white??

Bit of an update here..

So after buying these wheels i found out they were the wrong bore, so there up for sale again! lol

But not to be done out by this i thought i would try something....

So..............

What you all think to this idea??

OK so there 15's and on 45 profile, just means no need to lower and quicker acceleration! lol

scott.parker

The 16s on mine look barely ok, due to quite a bit of lowerage lol

scott.parker
13-02-11, 06:51 PM
Meh was just an idea as the Mo's LOOK the same size, due to them being white etc and the fact they have lower profile walls thought that will lower the car and under gear it meaning more acceleration! lol

They can be bored out to the correct size if you can bothered to find a machine shop to do it.

scott.parker
15-02-11, 04:33 PM
Yeah i could do that Keif, but then theres the other issue that the wheels are shallower then Vaux ones and you have to remove the castle nut covers on the fronts, then the center caps don't fit over as the castle nut sticks out proud of the wheel center/face etc.. just bodegary for no gains etc..

26-03-11, 03:08 PM
Sooo After selling them old wheels i went on the look for some more new ones..

Found some 17" x 7 ET38 Dynamics Tornado's in satin black, they were sold as factory 2nds, so i was expecting LOTS of scratches as the add said some surface scratching etc..

They arrived yesterday, i opened them today to be happily surprised!

pics..

http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/1471/photo0411.jpg

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/213/photo0406b.jpg

Now i need to decide what to do, can i get them just high gloss lacquer, or do they need high gloss painting, as i think the satin finish might blend too much with the tyres etc, and also what size tyres to get??

205/40 215/40 215/45's??

All help and suggestions welcome.

PS: they were an absolute bargain price, so cheep i wont say Incas i ever sell them! lol lol lol

Scott

AdamK
26-03-11, 03:35 PM
well it depends how well the wheels sit in the arches when the tyres are on it might only need 30mm to get rid of the gap

The correct 17" tyre size for an Astra G is 215/45x17 so stick with them.

Keif
26-03-11, 05:09 PM
so you think for sake of 5mm go 45s the price about 10-20 more per tyre tho

It's 5% of the width (so in this case 5% of 215mm)

It's up to you. I thought the car that i posted a pic of was running 215/40x17s and thinks it look "right". I was wrong, as it's on 45 profile tyres.

For the sake of up to £80 for the four tyres, probably not worth it really. :wtf:

Keif
26-03-11, 05:15 PM
Side wall height of

215/40 is 86 so 43mm from rim to edge of the tyre

215/45 is 96.75 so 48.4mm (rim to tyre edge)

So is a 5mm difference (if i've worked it out right)

scott.parker

i like this scott , but what happen to the vw ??

It slowly started to fall apart, all the central locking had a mind of its own, only one window worked as the front two regulators/cables broke so they were both jammed up into position or gaffa taped!

The final nail in the coffin was when the drive belt tensioner snapped on me and cost me 3 days off work and over £370 to fix!

BUT once the drive and cam belts were done my work mate bought ti off me, he fixed all the things wrong with it, put the standard springs back on (pussy), but put them on upside down and over tightened the bottom ball joint bolt making a hairline crack in the cast and it snapped and gave way one day while pullout of a junction, so now it's got a nice dented in wing too! lol

Ahh well i fitted mine wrong, youre supposed to fit the clips before the deflector but Stupot said to fit them without them at all, which i did @ PV, but i found the front windows continually rolling back down so i used a big flatblade screwdriver and fitted them after id got home, they still rolled back when closed on the one touch, so i stuck the flatblade back in and twisted it to widen the clips open more, they dont roll back anymore, are more secure imo as the clip now holds the deflector in rather than the seal open for it, and they dont seem to rub on the glass, and even if they do, its only the top three mil or so, which you dont see as i either have the window open, or closed:thumb:

Well i can see why you might need them on the rears from that video, but tbf you don't need them on fronts as you bend them into place, so i replaced the clips system with the 1.5mm thick double side bound tape, and I'm more happy that will be more secure/weather proof then the clips, as we use it to fix bonded window bars onto glass on our windows at work.

Ad, i will get some tyres soon as Ive got both nova's sorted, and then get them wheels on, and that gt3 back box, then see how i feel about the cars stance before i do anything more.

Some droppage will give it a much better look.

And just a backbox is fine exhaust wise imo, i wouldnt want mine any louder.

No i like the standard sound tbf, just not the bogo look lol

BUT i will wait till the wheels are on, as i plan to get some 45's on the 17's not 40's so should fill the arch back to norm or more etc.

A bit of tone will be fine, but Ive got one car that's noisy, I'm not a kid who loves the sound of loose back box's anymore, lol they ol cherry bomb box's were the thing to have on your mk2 fez when i was a kid!

And i knew twas you in the model tent as your 'limited edition' png shirt gave you away:p

Oh and on the subject of exhausts and being loud, i think im going to have to get a louder back box, purely because im sick of people walking out in front of me cos they dont bother to look and dont hear my car as its bloody silent:mad:
