View Full Version : XE in 4 door saloon, which fuel tank?

John

As per title. I have a mk2 4 door saloon which i'll be fitting an xe in, which was originally fitted with a 1.2 carb. The fuel filler on the tank enters at the rear, not the side like on a 2 door.
I'd prefer to have the external pump as per gte, not the internal pump/tank combo. What options do i have? mod the gte fuel tank with pipe at rear, swirl pot? any other ideas?
:)

Swirl pot in the boot or keep it full of fuel

Lol, might have to get a swirl pot in the boot then. Are they avaialble with fixings for normal rubber hoses?

something like one of these.

what is the third outlet for?

Yeah saw them for sale on, i think it was Vs with 8mm outlets recently, but to do is safely it could do with being contained and you'll have to have to run two pumps

two pumps? really? how come?

1.2i saloon tank and either mod the fuel pump housing etc to run an exterior or deal with the fact its an in tank pump.

High and low pressure, one to feed the swirl pot and one to feed the engine, a plumbing diagram has been covered on here in the past

Ran an in tank set up before, was s hit. Wouldn't you go for the swirl pot option?

I'm getting confused somewhere then, i thought you could run a swirl pot on single pump ok. so it'd run the second after the outlet on the pot?

Not worth it for the expense on a standard engine imo, if it was £5k worth of LET that might go bang if the standard swirl pot dried up then sure.

Take the in tank pump setup out and drop a tube into the bottom of the swirl pot, and run it to an exterior pump setup then

Fuel tank goes to low pressure pump goes to swirl pot, outlet goes to high pressure pump goes to engine, 3rd outlet is a return to the tank.

It doesn't have an in tank pump atm, it's originally carb, nor is there an inspection hole in the floor, meaning if i had probs with it, i'd have to drop the tank.

i have read of using a certain fule filter which acts like a swirl pot. i have the part number somewhere. i have used a 1.2 spi 4dr tank with an astra mk3 in tank pump and it was fine even when giving it beans on an empty tank.

just cut a hole in the floor when you take the old un out. the dent bit is there already. :)

Which is why I said 1.2i tank, and either mod it to run an external pump, or just cope with the fact its in tank, if you really dont want an in tank pump, then mod the pump gubbings to work with an external pump. The other option is spend hundreds on a dedicated swirl pot and dual pump setup, which sure, is an option... but is it really worth it for 0 benefit over standard items for this engine? Assuming it is not going to have a huge speclist.

It was an XE before John, so what tank was it running then? Carb one?

Out of interest what's up with using a spi tank with a mpi pump in it ?

I'm planning on using this set up for my Irmscher injection kit

Most people who've done it found no problems, however on the one xe i did it on ran s hit. On every other xe nova i've had/driven i used the external pump set up with no problems at all. just personal preference i guess.

cheap swirl pot

pump

the reason you need 2 pumps is the swirl pot will be above the tank so wont gravety feed so you need something like a facet to get the fuel to it then the normal mpi to take it to the engine

spi tank is the cheaper option, ive always run mpi so have no idea what there like

No need to cut it up.
Run a low pressure pump like a FACET red top from your existing tank outlet to a swirl pot (mount that in your spare wheel well), then run your HP pump out of that to the fuel rail, with the return from the engine into the swirl pot, and the return from the swirl pot to the tank.

part number of that filter is mann wk69/1 and is what alot of escort mk2 lads use for the job.

Good reply, so would a basic facet like this work?

i run the spi tank with mpi pump on my xe nova no probs, it was the 3rd pump from the scrapyard later, but it worked no probs! all the way to the nurburgring, 7 laps of death, and back home!
