iwas driving along then lost power then there was an expensive noise ! i got it stripped down to find the locating key had sheared on the bottom pulley and that 16valves were bent and the exhaust guides were burst, would it be safe to fit another head or is there a chance of botton end/wee end damage

How bad are the marks in the pistons?

you can see where they have struck but i put petrol into the bores and it stayed for a good half hour so chances are no cracks

if the marks are light you should get away with it heavy and you may have bent a rod but for that thy would need to be quiet heavey

Doubt you will have bent the rods tbh.

A rod is about 15x thicker than a valve, so, to bend a rod, the valves must be bent in two, and thrown into the head.

Id just get another engine, with nowt on it, for about £200

replace with a complete engine that you have seen running for peace of mind :thumb: will be cheaper and easier than trying to source replacement parts and fitting them then to find more damage

I had to replace 14 valves and 7 guides in my Xe head and that cost me about £200 + I lapped/fitted the valves myself...but at least that way you know its a goodun..

guides charge about £120 a set supplied/fitted...valves...id use some reface used ones save the expense of brand new as some of the new valves the collets dont fit properly, seals are about £10 + skim £25.

chuck some pics over of the coscast? is it early or late and how much meats left on it?

cheers

its an early one looks to be ported but i read somewhere the early ones were hand finished?? ill put sum pics on tommorow, as far as meat is concerned i had it skimmed before rebuild and the machinist recond there was another skim or two left in it

If it were me, I'd have the guides all replaced, get a set of valves, and get the seats all re-cut, then get the bottom end apart, have the rods checked, get a set of pistons, a hone, oil pump (while you're at it), ends & mains, and call it reconditioned by your own fair hand. Better the devil you know, than the devil you don't (£200 off ebay!)
