View Full Version : Solid lifters & cams
Gen me up please.
Is it simply a case of a set of solid lifters & cams to suit? (Never had the pleasure of fitting either myself)
Which leads me to this...
284°, 285°, 290°, 294°, 298°, 302° & 306° profiles. Any particular profile I should avoid for track & drag use?
8 or 16v?
Ideally you want a cam profile that is for solids, otherwise you wont get the most out of going to solid (bar a much higer rev limit lol)
Personally I'd go for 290-298 otherwise it starts getting peaky, and any less is semi pointless imho
What engine/whats the rest of the engine spec?
C20XE motor.
All the profiles I mention above are suitable for solids according to Autosprint?
Are these proper cams or regrinds?

Reground autosprint jobbies Ad. 310's & 314's are avaliable through them but they have to be from blanks at £400 odd a pair so fook that idea completey lol lol
rest of engine spec thoughts, thankyou please

L&B fly
Autosprint "stage3/race" head (whatever that entials i dont know yet?)
L&B bottem end
H rods & ARP's
then usual manifold/system blah blah
Not planning on using TB's until the engines had some use like.
What about pistons? What are you running before the tbs?
single throttle plenum will be fine (good enough for BTCC) with suitable managment

This is the thing, I dont know, do I need pocketed type? Never actively dabbled with solid lifters, never had too as the engines Ive/we've had with them in some one else built up.
with any form of "useful" cams in the XE (hyrdo or mech) you will need to pocket the pistons

Super duper :)
I was also told the motronic 2.5 or 2.8 won't run decent spec cams so you'll have to run aftermarket from the start
Correct /\
What xe have you got Mike?
Can pocket the standard pistons if they are forged Mahle items
i just remembered i think i have a set of mahle ones laying about it you want a spare set, small fee involved lol. with rods as well.
shoot me if you like.. but degrees dont say mcuh.
i'm running hydro 280º schrick cams on oem pistons.
everything above 296 is mechanical.

Not got one yet but changing pistons around isnt really a problem anyway.
288 is regarded as largest cam to be used on hydraulics, above that all are usualy solid profile. If your going solid profile, you need dual springs, steep caps, + buckets and shims. Shimming also isnt something you can do at home unless you have either a surface grinder or a lathe pref with digital read out so know exactly what your taking off the shim.
Early mahles i think can be pocketed a further 2mm, but tbh if looking at a solid cam then you wil be revving the motor and id def go for steel rods and some hi-comp forged pistons to make full use of the mods.

When i had my head built for my let it was

Bronze Guides (not sleves)
Solid lifters
Double valve springs
Shims
Early gm Spring seats
Double valve spring caps
Valve stem seals
porus modd
full port/polish
Funky cams
I also had the valve cuts outs machine deeper :)

Also make sure you get the deep shims becuase the short ones pop off !!!
Mike, i've got three perfectly good accrelite pistons here so you'll only need one new one :)
