Well... I bought this off Count vaux alot this evening...
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00027-20100728-2052.jpg
As soon as i got it off the trailor i stuck the GSi bumpers on it hehe, don't really know why as they need to come off but i thought i would for the photos lol.
Plans for this one, well I have a 1600 engine in my hutch convertible on twin 40 dcoe carbs I was thinking of running that in it for now until my E16SE turbo engine is all built up. Im going to have to get hold of some rear coilovers for it and re fit the O/S engine mount.
Had a good look at the shell when i got it home and its really tidy so after work tomorrow I'm going to make up a list of what needs doing :)
Anyway more pics
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00030-20100728-2053.jpg
This is the engine I am going to fit for now, although Im definatly investing in a vernier pully for it and a decent set of leads.

not even a high boost 1.7? Thought it would be good!

28-07-10, 10:53 PM
Maybe but I would prefer a high boost 1600 petrol lol

NOOOOOOO think of the thick black smoke? Ok or not then. 1600 turbo lump would be nice!

28-07-10, 11:06 PM
lol Well ive got alot of work ahead of me, I may end up putting something else in it, but I have been without a nova on the road for nearly two years so I'm going to try and get it done fairly quick and as the 1600 carb'd engine is ready to go I may as well use that for now :)

Cheers buddy,
Stroke of luck tonight, whilst having a sort out i noticed in my uncles old nova shell a loom in the back of it. So i took it out to find a complete car loom from a Nova gte! I know ive got to make some alterations to fit the gsi dash but at least I now have a loom. :)
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00032-20100729-2049.jpg
Definatly a gte loom because my e16se loom plugs into it :P because of this I am now wondering if i should go straight in and build the turbo motor up for it.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00034-20100729-2053.jpg
Oh, and my dad took an old rotten a reg shell to the scrap yard today :(, on the up side i got a steering column out of it so now it steers (ish) lol
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00035-20100729-2053.jpg
Will be doing more at the weekend might have a go at putting the wiring loom in :) need to take my mk1 wiper motor off my other shell.
:)

Thanks mate :) well i just need to source some boost hoses, exhaust elbow and downpipe and a few gaskets for the turbo. just need to save pennies to get it right rather than melt it lol
Get the turbo lump in there lol
Hope Craigs shell makes it back on to the road this time.
be nice to see it built back up and a nice turbo lump in it. im planning a 1.6 8v turbo lump for my car aswell +rep

Yeah, derv power isnt really for me to be honest.
get it turbo'd, you know you want to lol
on a side note, that picture if the 1.4 engine, what's wrong with that shell that you wanted the engine out of it?

get it turbo'd, you know you want to lol
on a side note, that picture if the 1.4 engine, what's wrong with that shell that you wanted the engine out of it?
Thats the 1600 out of my convertible buddy lol but if im using a turbo I will leave that engine in there and make another one lol
Cool, I sooooooo want that fannymould lol
I'm ( along with many others on here ) taken with the idea of a 1.6 turbo, I just wonder if there would be enough interest to maybe get a group buy for low comp pistons rather than using a spacer plate?
did you get the engine mount out of that shell before you dad scrapped it?
comptoncj
31-07-10, 08:39 AM
I didnt, but ive got a never used front end of a nova in the yard so im going to use that to replace the engine mount. well as for low comp pistons i was thinking about trying to find some, first build will be with the spacer as i already have one but i would be interested in some as i will be buying some steel rods soon.
I don't know of any low comps avalible of the shelf might be special order stuff, then again there arn't many suppliers up my way.
im also are intrested in building a 1.6 8v turbo, ive sourced a mani and a turbo, just need a engine and few other bits. group buy could maybe happen

Done a bit more today, tidied up the loom a little bit, de cluttered the car and began putting the loom somewhere near where it should be, started at the back and fed the wiring up to both rear lights and number plate light. got a couple of spade connectors to go somewhere not sure where yet they are red and blue and brown which i thought should be fuel pump but theyre too far back :S anyway...
Some pics of the loom sort of in :) making progress :)
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00043-20100731-1146.jpg
Need to sort the seal out where the loom goes into the engine bay. but its though there, need to either find a mk2 plug and loom for the wipers of nick the mk1 motor off my old nova lol.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00040-20100731-1130.jpg
I then had a quick look to see where everything will go near the fuse box, Im at the stage where i need the dash in to start connecting things.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00045-20100731-1149.jpg
Looks a bit of a mess but its getting there slowly :) plans for tomorrow are to remove the rear beam and swap it with the one out of my other nova which has new wheel cylinders and brake shoes... should be a game :)

Just been browsing ebay for turbo bits, need to source an elbow for my t25, tried a r5gtt one and the bolt holes didnt line up so that was an epic fail lol, I think a mid 90s 200sx one will fit, I also need a oil return fitting but all the ones on ebay are in japan... :S
good luck mate hope you finish it, be very tidy
200 sx or rover 220/620 turbo elbows will fit, turbo is off a rover mate
........ Wish I still had all the turbo bits here and not sold them to you lol that manifold is the last Courtenay had

Cheers Edd, and i know im very lucky to have it hehe, but i will put it to good use!
Did a bit more today after the F1
Put the dash in that came with the shell, I know its not a gsi one but it will do for now, wont take long to take out when i find a nice gsi one for it. :) Needs a bit of a clean up, and i need to do some wiring loom changes to make all the switches work. As for the rest of the interior I think I will put the carpets in and thats about it until i can afford the carbon fibre items.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00050-20100801-1704.jpg
I also fitted one of the cobra bucket seats I had sat at home :) now i need to make another modified nova subframe to fit the other one.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00052-20100801-1705.jpg
Untill next time :)

03-08-10, 11:17 PM
Did a bit more tonight only for an hour or so, I took the ignition barrel and steering lock off of my old nova shell and fitted them, Then i set to working out where the rest of the wiring goes, need to some how feed the wires back up the roof lining for the interior light lol. Going to pick up some more bits this weekend thanks to AW06 :)
Anyway heres a pic of the barrel hehe :)

Lol Im just browsing for parts, Would it be advised to run an oil cooler? as theres a nice kit on ebay with a remote filter kit plus a 13 row cooler.
craig green
03-08-10, 11:43 PM
It wouldnt hurt, the correct grade oil is more beneficial. I dont know about grades but something more stable at higher temps.

03-08-10, 11:48 PM
I see, well im doing my homework on this, Im ordering a 200sx elbow for the t25 so then ive just got to make a downpipe once the engine and turbo it fitted :)
C612DNM
04-08-10, 01:09 PM
Now listen boy!
Start with that engine mounting bit - you don't need to cut anything out of my spare front end - just plate over the oil burner's mounting hole, it'll add strength.
Yes, you could do with an oil cooler. 13 row might be a little large. 9 row would be enough - only running a 24 row on that little engine in the Belmont, and that's a touch bigger than your 1600.....
I thought I said tidy up that wiring loom before you put it in. Get some fabric loom tape, it'll look much better, and be easier to handle.
Since this is going to be a track slag, don't go OTT on ponsy stuff. KISS is the answer - Keep It Simple Stupid!
Have you got that sound deadening off the floor/bulkhead/rear panels yet? Lots of unwanted weight there.
Also, think about your intercooler & radiator combination vs the turbo's position. May need to get clever with some heat shielding, but not too clever that it blocks off the airflow rendering the rad and the intercooler ineffective.
If it were me, I'd make it rear wheel drive........ I've got a new lance coming for the plasma cutter.....
Good job I didn't chuck that loom....

Done a bit more this weekend, went to see alex AW06 and purchased a fuel tank with a mpi pump fitted, another nova wiring loom, this time a mk2 loom, some sri clocks and some headlamps.
Well I dug this heap out that was in the farm yard at home...
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/P020510_1341.jpg
Set to taking it apart and putting it on an engine stand...
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00055-20100808-1610.jpg
Took the sump off and to my supprise the bottom end isnt too bad I expected it to be siezed and all gummed up but it turns over, i took a big end cap off to have a quick look and the shell only had very light wear on it.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00057-20100808-1621.jpg
Anyway, parts will be ordered, new big ends, mains, rings, two head gaskets, top and bottom gasket set. :D Then i can start to build the engine up. :)

More done today :)
The nova now has a petrol mount back in :) Had to grind back where the count had lovingly seam sealed and painted to drill out the spot welds of the remains of the old mount. Air chisel came in handy at this point. Which left me with... http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00070-20100814-1215.jpg
After a bit more grinding my dad welded the petrol mount in place :) sorted
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00072-20100814-1434.jpg
Fitted the sri clocks that i bought off AW06 and ive decided to put my boost gauge where the clock once was.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00075-20100814-1524.jpg
Then i set to fitting my bonnet pins, then need a bit more 'fine adjustment' lol but should do the job.

Did a bit of tidying underneath and in the wheel arches, il post some pics up when ive done them all :) My subframes arrived for my seats so i mounted one up and they are stupidly high so im going to need to take a saw and a welder to them lol.
Other than that i put the vented discs on mated up with corsa sport calipers, going to order some ebc pads for them when funds allow lol.

Don't use EBC's use PAGID - much better.
I suppose those little discs will do for now.
Cavalier GSi discs & calipers is what I put on the race car, plenty of stopping power.

Bit more done over the bank holiday, decided to get some paint and tidy some components up,
I painted the tank gold, it needs another coat to look perfect i might have time during this week to do that. Think i am going to do the tie bars gold as well :)
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00097-20100829-1724.jpg
And the next update... Slight change of plan on the initial power plant, won this on ebay for peanuts came out of a early tigra, when i arrived to pick it up the chap selling it said i could have what ever else i needed off the tigra plus a load more 1600 xe parts. the gearbox is cable drive, there is a plug for the vss but the vss is not there which is odd :S
Quick pic of engine going to order the rebuild parts this week for it and maybe a power box if i can find one for the right money. :)

As always plans never go as straight forward as you want them to, I took the head off this x16xe to find some nice scores down bores 2 and 3 and upon removing the sump i found nice lumps of white metal :( I tried to hone the bores but it needs a rebore, well, back to square one again, maybe its a sign... I now plan to use the crank out of the x16xe in the e16se along with a recon oil pump off the x16xe and continue my turbo build.
Pics to follow
nice plans, run a 1600 16v then once bored chuck in 1600 8v turbo
nice one

Got a fair bit done this weekend :) Firstly I re-loomed the car for the third time, using CG's old loom, then fitted the dash carcass into place. I also re-fitted the braided internal brake lines at this time.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00114-20101009-1257.jpg
Sunday morning arrived and the workshop was free, so I put the gsi in the workshop, took all the front suspension off and then lifted it up ready for the engine to be re-united with the car.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00117-20101010-1218.jpg
Then with a bit of moving about and help from my uncle, the engine was mounted up, although i need a new rear mount as the one that is on has a split in it.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00119-20101010-1238.jpg
I fitted the Mantzel inlet manifold, remote oil filter and the turbo manifold then had a look at where the boost pipes go cant believe how tight it is once the boost pipes are in!
So for now the nova looks like this.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00120-20101010-1655.jpg
Hope to do a bit more tomorrow night need to get a better rear beam put on it so I can fit the brake lines and rear coilovers and start putting it all back together :)

Bit more done today, fuel tank is in, need to sort the fuel lines out, rear beam is now swapped, and I need to put new cables on it, found a slight issue in one of the brake pipes, its been crushed at some point where it goes back on itself under the rear turret so I will need to replace it. Gaz coilovers are on and i put my tail pipe on just to see what it looked like lol.

Small update,
Car is now MOT'd sailed through with no advises! needed to sort the brake bias out though as the valve is set for rear discs so the drums were not really doing much lol. I had a week off work to get the car MOT ready, Its still not finished as i need to save up to get a gsi interior back in it. Also the fuel pump is noisey below a third of a tank i think there is a small split in the pick up pipe for the pump :(
To do list still includes
Anti roll bars
tie bar bushes
tracking
decent tyres!
interior
different boot
wideband lambda
and a RR run
Car pulls well was not expecting it to go like it does, its running 7psi at the moment.

Havn't updated for a while, snow stopped play for a few weeks! Over the Christmas break i went to see Colin Smith and bought some seats, door cards, centre console and rear seat belts for the nova. Started sorting the interior out yesturday, bucket seat now out and in with gsi trim, its made such a difference having the interior in made the car look much better IMO. Today i spent most of the day removing the dash and hiding lots of wires, before they were just on the dash shelves both sides! After that i replaced the bulbs in the clocks which made lots of difference upgrading from 1.2w to 2.0w bulbs i also put the heater ducts in and fitted a stereo.
Pics to follow tomorrow when its light!

Update time, had a few hours on the nova today,
I took a pic the other day when i had the dash out of all the wires i have to contend with to hide behind the dash lol
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00012-20101230-1343.jpg
Right to today, I broke the nova :( Came home from my girlfriends house on wednesday and the nova developed a rattling that became louder the closer i got to home. I had a look with a torch and noticed the auxially belt tensioner moving around. So today i took it off and changed the wheel and bearing, this made no difference so as i had the car jacked up i had a look underneath. To my horror i noticed the noise was coming from the bottom pulley so i stopped the engine. I could move the Pulley up and down :tard: I tightened it up with an air gun which seems to have sorted it :thumb:
Pic of Tensioner
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00013-20110115-1137.jpg
I then had a fiddle with the boost had a couple of adjustments followed by blasts up the road untill i was happy with it. Its a bit of a pig to get to as the controller is by the front panel. I then fitted my 1.2 spi transducer to try and sort the cutting out problem but on road test it still cuts out

Right ive broke it again :( the alternator has packed up, this car is proving to be a wee bit fragile. I have been thinking about making another twist in the ODW story and fitting wait for it... an E16SE the T40'd engine ive got and use it over the summer with that in as i miss the noise. and then future plans may mean the turbo engine ending up in the convertible. opinions welcome but ive been thinking about this for a while now. hmmm
Wouldn't bother doing that tbh
Just fit another alternator surely ?
That car is meant to have a smallblock turbo engine lol

comptoncj
22-01-11, 05:05 PM
lol well it hasnt been running right feels flat above 4000rpm but im not sure if it is all linked to the alternator packing up, and it still cuts out with a vss fitted so im a bit confused about that unless they are all linked lol

I now have a donor c20xe engine and im so tempted to put it in this, as it will be more drivable on the road. Then the c16xe in the convertible for the shows next year. well thats my proposed plan anyway.

Bit of an update happening with this now, its going big block. The c16xe will end up in the hutch loon at some point, Ive been buying parts for the gsi and have aquired quite alot to work with. Engine will be a fully rebuilt 20xe with arp rod bolts on twin 40s. Ive got most of the rebuild parts now just need to get it built and ready for the summer. Ive also bought some new wheels for it a set of cesaros off of Dom. The list is endless of what needs finishing off but i like a challenge. I'll put some pics up when i get a chance.
Looking good pal how far away from Lincoln are you? More novas then I realised in Lincoln!
Nooooooooooo :(
Sad news on the turbo lump lol
Whats up with it ?
It deffo quicker than a XE so why do the swap ?
comptoncj
02-03-11, 07:30 AM
Sorry Edd, im not giving up on the turbo lump but for now i want something a bit more drivable as the turbo just spins up too easily in the first 3 gears lol and an xe on carbs is quite a bit cheaper to insure.
comptoncj
10-03-11, 08:11 PM
Update time, Collected all my 20xe rebuilt parts last week and set to rebuilding the engine that I bought of James ( Count Vaux Alot) Last year. The engine looked pretty good with minimal wear on the big end and main bearings, but as I intend to give this engine a bit of stick I thought I would change everything.
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00046-20110225-1825.jpg
I built the bottom end up, New Big ends, Mains, Rings etc just waiting on either a new oil pump or an oil pump repair kit to use on the origional one, the faces of the oil pump look ok but there is a bit of wear on the gears. Anyway heres a pic of the bottom end with ARPs fitted :)

I also have had the head skimmed and that is now back home now. I have bought a distributor off of ebay I hope its the correct one it was listed as a cavalier 1.6 (16s/16sh) distributor with pin drive and vac advance so it should be the correct one. The plan is to make a loom out of an old xe loom to power the distributor and coil up. I am also taking to bits the other c20xe nova ive got to borrow some parts to make the conversion a bit quicker lol

Hi Chris, I gather you sent a PM regarding the alamrm or immobiliser. I'll try & halp but tbh I know very little about them, but I fail to see why the immobiliser would have any effect on the windows unlee you mean you cant get the ign on to move them?
comptoncj
28-03-11, 07:28 AM
For some reason the immobiliser cuts out all the interior electrics as well as the engine electrics, untill the immobiliser and alarm are disarmed i cant work the windows, dash board, etc

Update, Car was running, then started kangarooing on acceleration, so I changed the fuel tank and pump, I used a fuel tank that i had in the shed lol and the pump of the c20xe nova that ive got. After a few hours of messing around it fired up, then stopped again. I found the problem, i had connected the fuel hoses backwards on the tank lol then i treated it to a new set of leads and its pretty much back to how it was when i first built it so I'm quite happy :) just need to double check the fuel pressure then i can use it lol

Update time, been busy over the last couple of weekends. I got the nova to actually work, well for about 15 minutes whilst i washed it and then the fuel pump gave up :( nevermind. I have been building a 20xe to go in for the last month or so and its nearly complete. should be swapping engines in the next couple of weekends.
Anyway pics.
Took a couple after i washed it, really annoyed me that its looking so clean and i cant use it :( bit naughty but its the first time ive actually washed it since its been built which was in october lol.

Still got a fair bit to do, got a loom and ecu on the way and i need to buy a clutch kit. Dom dropped off a f20 gearbox the other night for me to use so i need to clean that up, clean the oil cooler out and then I will be making progress.
Nice work !

Update, Got started on the nova at about 10am, at mid day the 1600 engine was on the floor :)
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00033-20110507-1237.jpg
I then did the mods needed to allow some space for the alternator and shortend the heater matrix pipe and moved the clutch cable run. After a few minutes of messing about the engine was in, well on two mounts the rear mount was being a right pain :(
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx311/compton251/IMG00036-20110507-1849.jpg
After struggling with the rear mount the engine was finally in, so i connected a few pipes up and the clutch cable, waiting on a few more parts now to finish the job.

Told ya to do the inner wing properly. Bashin' it is *not* the solution.
The solid mounts might make a bit of an improvement.
I dunno!
comptoncj

D'oh Had an attempt at fitting solid mounts today only to find i need to do some drilling lol, where the strengthening plates have been welded into the inner wings they have covered the little hole in the drivers side mount so my solid mount wouldnt fit :( so the nova currently has two solid mounts and one normal one! Then i noticed that one of the metal fuel lines is leaking so i need to replace them before it goes anywhere again. On a better note, i gave it some stick today and it goes better than i expected it to :) so im happy in that respect, pics to follow when i get a chance.

Wow last post was in June lol, quite a bit has happened since then, after running the engine in for a few thousand miles i set to putting the twin 45s on it. Bit of a job as i was running DIS managment, so i swapped the exhaust cam for a dizzy drive one, removed all the injection stuff. fitted the 45s and cav dizzy set up, started first turn of the key! and idled! was rather supprised although the idle was at about 550rpm lol anyway its awsome has transformed the car, so much quicker and more willing to rev, and the noise is epic! Having a few issues at the moment though, i think i need shares in BP to keep the thing running! 4th gear crunches all the time and the oil leak that i thought was the rocker cover has turned out to be a crack in the front of the head! plan is to drive it around and enjoy it untill feb time and its off the road to be resprayed and sort all the issues out. The other reason is i have bought a series 2 90 spec rs turbo in a moment of madness lol.
I will add some pics of the bay when i can and some more progress of it, MOT end of october as well!

Haha yes i will have to put a pic up of my mk2, she's looking sorry for herself, only good thing is it is hidden away in a barn out of the weather. In fact i went in there the other day and looked at it thinking i NEED to start working on it.

Here are some pics, apologies on quality! This work was done in May this year, since then I have been a little bit pre-occupied with my son arriving in June.

This was how it looked once un-covered in a sorry looking state.

With a bit of a freshen up under the bonnet, poly bushed steering rack mounts. A bit of Spaghetti wiring to sort out!

Getting there now, engine runs!
There will be more updates soon, The car needs a full respray so that will take a bit of effort and money to sort out. Plans are keep the engine fairly standard for a start, i need to swap fuel tanks as its running out of a carb tank at the moment so isn't ideal at all! most of the underside rust proofing/ repairs are done. I have a rear disc set up to go on. I think this may take a while...

Looking good, what colour are you thinking for the respray? Or just a refresh of the red?

It will be staying red, just trying to source parts like a front grill and a decent bonnet as the white one was slapped on it lol

You have to fit an intercooler? It's had the recess cut and everything! Lol

All in good time! I may end up putting a front panel on it but it depends how difficult it will be to get the bits to make it 8v turbo... again!

With all this isolation going on it would be rude not to do a few jobs to the nova. I have recently moved to a new workshop and I’m in the process of moving my nova stuff over there.
The last time I did any work on the gsi was last year. I removed the carb fuel tank and sourced a gte/gsi one and have painted that ready to go on. But the more worrying things I have found are a few patches of dreaded rust! Hats off to Upol as it hid the rust in the front wheel arches very well! I’ve also found some rot in the offside rear inner arch near the fuel filler. So time to get the welder out!

Hope to get stuck in again soon!

Cars now moved to my new workshop, started stripping it out. I was surprised how bad it was. The body repairs I’ve found that must have been done a long long while ago were done to a very average standard!

I’ve found so much filler on what I thought was a pretty sold shell. It’s going to be a full strip down now.

Nearside rear arch is the better of the two and hasn’t been replaced before. The inner arch has rotted away. I suspect due to having the arch lips rolled a long while ago.

Uncovered this on the offside arch. The panel has been spotted on over the top of the old rusty panel. There was around 10mm of filler in places across the 1/4 to blend it all in. I always thought the arches looked a bit wider than other novas I had seen.

The inner arch isn’t good. I’ve got all the arch panels but will have to fabricate some in-between bits to make everything fit.

Just showing the thickness of filler!

Old repair uncovered.

Starting to cut the rot out. My first time doing anything like this so a bit of a learning curve!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201007/094d279a07e9176ac8868db21fb9fce3.jpg
Too late now! Next on the list is to chop out the inner arch back to decent metal.
