Anyone got any experience of these cars?

Fed up of my nova getting broken into, so ive stripped it for parts.

Got about 3k to spend on a small, fast, new(ish) hatch.

Any other recommendations, must be cheap(ish) to insure aswell, with 1yncb

3k get a starlet turbo fast newish and reliable

Sloth

neutral handling, not that fast, clutches are a ferking nightmare and go often, they do turbo well mind.... oh and they eat disks and pads.... the timing covers leak oil and the vvti controller dies, as does the afm. code 1302 iirc.

small fast hatch? starlet sr, yours for 1k tops and then spend 1k on big brakes and a set of coilovers. dont touch a srarlet turbo thats below 3k, unless its a known car. the cheap ones are dog****, and tbh they aint fast.

2.5k to insure a non import one.

Cant get insured on an import one.

Renault Clio 1.5dCI's are cheap to pick up and insure... alot cheaper than the vvti

Sloth

ok then, go buy a normal starlet, its the same engine, its just the trim thats different.

I'm in a similar position. I've been looking at Seat Leons with the 1.9TDi engine, very cheap to insure

My nan has some sporty Yaris, it's pretty nice even if my nan does own it

/yeah, ive also been looking at the leon. Bit more to buy tho

106 GTi? Or Rallye?

Nova_Sean
26-07-10, 10:11 AM
106 is too small and the rally is too old. Wouldn't mind an306 turbo diesel. The older shape one

i hate to say it but pugrot diesels aint that bad, my mate and my dad both had 306's and other than a rocker gasket nothing went wrong with either, both engines on 130k plus and never serviced in their ownership

How can you say a 106 is too old then talk about a Ph1/2 306 durbo? lol

Good cars though. Cheap insurance for decent performance. What about something like a Mazda 323?

As soon as i read the thread title i was expecting my name to be mentioned on the first reply lol

As for the 106 being too small, have you tried driving one? As most of you know, i bought one last month and although im used to the size of a 3 series i absolutley love the car. Feels perfect and is actually very comfy.

For your £3k budget you can buy mine and be able to afford the extra insurance :thumb:

Audi coupe?

Insurance isn't too bad for me, 19, passed last month. Reasonably quick, **** on fuel, **** on tires.

But my god it sounds nice & grips like a winner.

Insurance maybe an issue for a hot hatch, I wasn't getting anything below 5k on a 106 gti.

No claims/points & 2 years driving experience, no no-claims mind.

You have one of these? If so which one? I have an ABK B4 saloon which is lighter than the coupe and it is slow and overpriced to insure! I wouldn't mind a quattro 7A engined Audi but they're getting rare.

Back to the topic - I for one would take the Starlet SR over a Yaris - my assumption being that it's older and therefore easier to work with!!lol I may be totally wrong.
So for those in the know about Starlet SRs - would one of these compare to an SR nova, being of a similar power to weight ratio? Is the Starlet chassis any good, not that the Nova is great to begin with!
It's definitely in my list of next cars to have, living in the city and not needing a family wagon.

a starlet sr will hand a sr nova a kicking every day of the week. they rev like buggery and go really well. as for the chassis, coilovers and decent brakes and it becomes a go kart. they handle very well as std.:thumb:

Any major weak points with the Starlet SR (like mechanical problems or do they rust badly) - you don't see too many round here, yet there are loads of K11 Micras!

1 word. bulletproof. the rads sometimes corrode at the bottom, but only if the car isnt used much, the alloys are expensive to replace if damaged (speedlines) and the genuine exhaust is pricey. change the coolant for toyota pink, oil and filter it every 5k miles, and do the cambelt when you buy it ( 20 mins if it hasnt got pas, 50 if it has, threadlock the bottom pulley bolt.) oh and change the fuel filter. trd panel filters are better than cone filters. speak to fensport about brake upgrades, as the std stuff is a bit poo when driven hard. rust wise, i only saw one with that in 6 years, on the lower cross member and the rear sill ends, but that lived by the sea all its life and never got cleaned. if i could find a mint white sr id have one.:thumb:

I'm paying just under 500 FC with a low excess - still sick though as I'm 26, clean licence, 7 years NCB and it's on a driveway. I guess that comes with living in a city.

Going to be getting a pug 306 d turbo. Which is the 1.9, this one has more sportier trim, slightly lower aswell. Would love one in black, but gold will be ok too!

Tut tut. Blaze yellow, not gold! At least thats what my mate keeps telling me.

Blaze durbo will be a HDi won't it?

Sorry to bring up a semi-old topic but i have to say thats totally wrong information.

We've had a yaris t-sport in the family from new (2003) its now done 119,000 miles and its been brilliant, its still on the standard clutch, standard brake discs and its never had its vvti controller dieing. Still drives like it did over 7 years ago.

It is also a fast car for its engine size, 1.5 engine for 8.7 seconds to 60mph is no slouch it has to be said. Untill you have owned one, don't bring it down.
